The right Monologue alternative depends on what is pushing you away. If you need Windows or Android, try Wispr Flow or Superwhisper. If you want to stop paying a subscription, VoiceInk ($25), BetterDictation ($39) and SuprFlow ($125) are one-time purchases that recognise speech on the Mac. If you want dictation that works fully offline with nothing to pay, look at Handy or Apple's built-in Dictation. If you use Monologue on your iPhone, iPad and Mac and like its voice notes and meeting notes, few alternatives cover all of that, and staying may be the better call.
Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.

Why do people look for a Monologue alternative?
These are limits Monologue documents itself.
- It is a subscription after a short trial. Monologue's pricing lists a free trial of 1,000 dictation words and 10 recorded notes, then Pro at $15 a month or $144 a year, as of 1 October 2026. It is also included with an Every subscription.
- No Windows or Android. Its platform page says it "does not currently offer Windows or Android apps".
- Remote processing is the default. Its processing guide says audio is sent to Monologue's processing service for transcription and smart formatting, and its privacy policy names Groq, Fireworks and OpenRouter as AI providers.
- Local mode is partly local. On an Apple silicon Mac, local mode transcribes on the Mac, but "Smart formatting may still require a network connection", and local accuracy "may be lower than remote transcription". Local mode is not available on Intel Macs.
What Monologue does well is just as clear. One subscription covers Mac, iPhone and iPad, and its pricing page lists Apple Watch too. It combines dictation with voice notes, bot-free meeting notes and agent access to notes over MCP, API and CLI. Its privacy policy says it will not train AI models on your PII, audio or transcripts, that its AI providers use "a zero data retention approach", and that audio and transcripts are not stored on its servers unless you turn that on.

If you need Windows or Android: Wispr Flow or Superwhisper
Wispr Flow's system requirements list Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, with Intel Macs supported. Like Monologue's default, it is a cloud service; its docs say an internet connection is required. The Pro price matches Monologue's, so this is a platform decision, not a saving. Wispr Flow vs Monologue compares them line by line.
Superwhisper's plans page says Pro covers "unlimited Macs and Windows PCs, plus your iPhone and Android phone", and its free plan includes "unlimited dictation with local Whisper models". You choose local or cloud per mode, so check each mode's setting. Superwhisper alternatives
If you want to stop subscribing: VoiceInk or BetterDictation
VoiceInk says it "processes all voice transcription locally on your device", with optional Cloud Enhancement that sends "only transcribed text (not your voice)". It costs $25 for one Mac, $39 for two or $49 for three, with a free trial and 14-day money-back guarantee, and its source is public on GitHub.
BetterDictation runs Whisper on the Mac and costs $39 once for one Mac or $49 for three. Its optional Pro cleanup sends transcribed text, not audio, to OpenAI, per its privacy policy. SuprFlow vs BetterDictation
Both require Apple Silicon. Neither replaces Monologue's voice notes or meeting notes.
If you want meeting notes on the Mac: MacWhisper
MacWhisper transcribes recordings and says it "records all your online meetings" with "No bots joining", plus system-wide dictation. Pro is €64 once. MacWhisper alternatives
If you want free and offline: Handy or Apple Dictation
Handy describes itself as "a free, open source, and extensible speech-to-text application that works completely offline". Its README says you press a shortcut, speak, and the words appear in any text field, "without sending any information to the cloud". Apple's built-in Dictation costs nothing; Apple's Mac User Guide says you can check in Keyboard settings whether general text dictation is processed on your device. Apple Dictation alternatives
SuprFlow: when would it make sense instead?
SuprFlow is a Mac menu-bar app: hold Fn, speak, release, and the text is pasted at your cursor. Speech is recognised on the Mac with a downloaded model, and Default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers, so it does not depend on an online formatting step. Optional Cloud API formatting sends text, not audio, to a provider you choose. It costs $125 once for up to five Macs you personally own, with a 7-day refund on a first purchase.
Be clear about where it loses. It has no free tier or trial, no iPhone, iPad or Windows app, no voice notes, no meeting recorder and no team admin console. Local speech also does not mean no network traffic: licence checks, updates and usage telemetry use the internet. If you depend on Monologue on your phone, SuprFlow is not a replacement. How do you test an alternative in 15 minutes?
- In Monologue (note Remote or Local mode), dictate this made-up passage in your most-used app: "Hi Bartholomew, the lease is 2,950 a month, not 2,590. Viewing is on the 22nd. Um, no, the 23rd. Copy Ms. Adeyemi-Holt."
- Count fixes to the names, both amounts and the corrected date.
- Dictate the same passage with one alternative in the same app.
- Turn Wi-Fi off and repeat, if offline matters to you.
- Add two of your own terms to each app's vocabulary and retry.
Switch only if the alternative needed fewer fixes or solved the reason you came here.
Questions people ask

Yes. Handy is free and open source, Superwhisper and Wispr Flow have free plans with limits, and Apple Dictation is built into macOS. None combines dictation, voice notes and meeting notes on iPhone and Mac the way Monologue does.
Is there a Monologue alternative with no subscription?

Which Monologue alternative works on Windows?
Wispr Flow, Superwhisper and Handy have Windows versions. BetterDictation says Windows is coming. SuprFlow is Mac only.
Which alternative keeps formatting on the Mac too?
