Mac Dictation not working? Causes and fixes Apple documents

Dictation on your Mac or MacBook stopped working? Match the symptom to its likely cause and fix: settings, shortcut, microphone, language or Voice Control.

When Dictation on a Mac or MacBook is not working, the cause is usually one of five things: Dictation is turned off, Voice Control is turned on, the shortcut is not the one you are pressing, the wrong microphone is selected, or the language you are speaking needs a download or an internet connection. Find your symptom in the table, then work through the steps below it.

The settings names here come from Apple's Mac User Guide for macOS 27. The macOS 26 and macOS 15 editions of the same pages describe the same settings. If your screen looks different, open System Settings and type "Dictation" in its search field.

Check the basics in Apple's order

Apple's page If Dictation on Mac doesn't work as expected lists these checks. Do them in this order.

  1. Confirm Dictation is on. Choose Apple menu → System Settings, click Keyboard in the sidebar (you may need to scroll down), go to Dictation, and turn it on. If asked, click Enable.
  2. Choose the correct language and region. In the same section, click Edit next to Languages.
  3. Confirm the shortcut. Look at the Shortcut pop-up menu. Press exactly what it shows. To rule the keyboard out, click in a document and choose Edit → Start Dictation from the menu bar. Apple's Dictation guide lists that menu command as one of three ways to start, next to the Microphone key and the shortcut.
  4. Check the microphone. If your Mac has no internal microphone, Apple says to make sure an external one is connected and selected in Sound or Keyboard settings. Under Dictation, open the Microphone source pop-up menu and pick the one you are speaking into. If you choose Automatic, Apple says the Mac listens to the device you are most likely to use.
  5. Raise the input volume. For an external microphone, choose System Settings → Sound → Input, select the microphone, and increase its input volume.
  6. Remove obstructions and noise. Apple suggests keeping the microphone unobstructed and trying a headset microphone in a noisy or echoing room.
  7. Check the internet connection. Apple says "You may need an internet connection." The text below the Dictation switch tells you whether general text dictation is processed on your device. Is Mac Dictation private? explains that text.

When the dictation microphone on a Mac is not working in other apps either, such as a call or a voice memo, the problem is the microphone or the sound input setting, not Dictation.

Is Voice Control turned on?

This is the cause people miss. Apple states it plainly: "When Voice Control is on, you use Voice Control to dictate text; standard macOS Dictation isn't available."

To check, choose Apple menu → System Settings, click Accessibility, then click Voice Control. Apple's page Turn Voice Control on or off on Mac says a Voice Control icon appears in the menu bar while it is on. Turn it off to get standard Dictation back. If you turned it on deliberately, you can dictate through Voice Control instead. Mac dictation commands explains the difference.

Is the shortcut the problem?

Three things can make a working shortcut seem broken:

  • The shortcut was changed. The Shortcut menu may be set to a different option from the one you remember.
  • The Fn/Globe key has another job. Apple's Keyboard settings page lists four choices for Press fn key to: Change Input Source, Show Emoji & Symbols, Start Dictation (press the key twice), and Do Nothing.
  • Another app uses the same key. Quit other dictation apps, launchers and keyboard utilities one at a time and test again.

The Mac dictation shortcut guide walks through each setting.

Does the language need a download or a connection?

Apple's macOS feature availability page lists which languages support Dictation, and a shorter list that supports on-device dictation. That shorter list carries the note "Requires download of speech models." So a language you just added may need a connection before it works, and a language outside the on-device list is one Apple does not describe as processed on the Mac. Stay connected after adding a language, then try again.

Is your Mac managed by an employer or school?

Apple's deployment documentation lists a restriction for Mac computers called Modify Dictation, described as "Users can't use dictation on their device." If your Mac is managed and the Dictation setting is missing or cannot be changed, no setting on your side will fix it. Ask the administrator.

What if nothing above helps?

Apple's Dictation checklist does not include a restart, but it is a harmless general step:

  1. Turn Dictation off in Keyboard settings, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again.
  2. Choose Apple menu → Restart, as Apple's restart page describes.
  3. After the restart, test in Notes with a short sentence before you try the app that failed.
  4. If it still fails, contact Apple Support with your macOS version, language and microphone.

When is a separate dictation app a reasonable workaround?

A third-party dictation app has its own speech recognition and shortcut, so it gets around some problems and not others.

Reasonable:

  • Built-in Dictation fails in one app you depend on, and another app's way of inserting text works there. Test before paying.
  • You want speech recognised on the Mac for a language or setting where your Mac shows server processing.

Not a fix:

  • A broken or muted microphone. Every dictation app needs the same working input.
  • A managed-Mac restriction. A new app does not lift it, and your organisation may have rules about other voice software. Ask first.
  • A noisy room or a poor headset. Recognition quality follows the audio.

SuprFlow is one such app. It runs a speech model on Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 14 or later, uses a hold-to-talk Fn key or a custom hotkey, and costs $125 once with no free tier. Apple Dictation is free, so fix it first. SuprFlow vs Apple Dictation covers when a paid app earns its place; Best dictation app for Mac lists free alternatives.

Questions people ask

Why did Dictation on my Mac suddenly stop working?

Check for a changed shortcut, Voice Control being switched on, a different microphone becoming the input (for example after connecting a headset), or a lost internet connection.

Why does Mac Dictation stop after a few seconds?

Apple says Dictation stops automatically when no speech is detected for 30 seconds. If it stops sooner, check the selected microphone and its input volume.

Does Mac Dictation need the internet?

Sometimes. Apple says to read the text below the Dictation switch in Keyboard settings to see whether general text dictation is processed on your device. If it is not, you need a connection.

Can I use Dictation and Voice Control at the same time?

No. Apple says standard Dictation is not available while Voice Control is on. You dictate through Voice Control instead.
