Mac dictation apps with no subscription: buy once (2026)

Four Mac dictation apps sell a one-time or lifetime licence: VoiceInk, MacWhisper, SuprFlow and Superwhisper. See each price, what lifetime covers and refunds.

As of 1 October 2026, four Mac dictation apps sell a one-time purchase: VoiceInk ($25 for one Mac), MacWhisper Pro (€64), SuprFlow ($125 for up to five Macs) and Superwhisper Lifetime ($249.99). Several more are free, including Apple Dictation, Handy and the free tiers of Superwhisper and MacWhisper, so a dictation app with no subscription does not have to cost anything. Wispr Flow, Willow, Typeless and Aqua Voice are subscription only.

Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.

We have not benchmarked these apps against each other. This page compares licence terms, which can be read, not accuracy, which has to be tested.

It is no accident that every one-time app in the table can recognise speech on your Mac. A cloud service pays for servers each time you dictate, so it charges every month. An app that uses your Mac's processor has no such running cost.

What does each one-time licence actually include?

VoiceInk: $25 for one Mac

VoiceInk's site says you "receive a license key for lifetime access to all current features and future updates", with a 14-day money-back guarantee and a free trial. It requires Apple Silicon and macOS 14.4 or later. Transcription runs locally; an optional Cloud Enhancement sends transcribed text, not voice, plus your vocabulary and any enabled context according to its Privacy and Data doc. The source code is public under GPL v3, and the README says the paid build adds automatic updates and priority support.

MacWhisper Pro: €64, direct download only

MacWhisper's edition comparison describes a "One-time Lifetime License" as a personal licence for all features, sold through Gumroad, with volume packs and a 25% discount for students, journalists and nonprofits on request. The licence key works only with the direct download. The Mac App Store edition, Whisper Transcription, is sold through in-app subscriptions and does not include dictation. MacWhisper is mainly a transcription app for files and meetings; dictation is one of its features. AI prompts need your own provider API key, which is a separate running cost. macwhisper.com listed the price in euros on 1 October 2026; your currency may differ.

Superwhisper Lifetime: $249.99

Superwhisper's plans page says "Every plan includes the same features; only the billing differs", that one Pro licence works on unlimited Macs and Windows PCs plus your phone, and that Lifetime keys never expire. Superwhisper's introduction page adds that Pro includes its cloud models "with no usage limits or extra costs". The refund policy gives 30 days from first purchase and notes that a licence, including a lifetime one, can be terminated for breaking the terms of service, for example automated or bulk use of its backend. Lifetime costs about the same as three years of the annual plan, and Superwhisper's free tier may already be enough: it includes unlimited dictation with local Whisper models.

SuprFlow: $125 for up to five Macs

SuprFlow is a Mac menu-bar dictation app for Apple Silicon and macOS 14 or later. You hold Fn, speak and release, a speech model on the Mac transcribes it, and the text is pasted at your cursor. It includes a personal dictionary, voice snippets and a local history.

What the licence says, from the terms of service:

  • Price: $125 once. No subscription and no usage limits.
  • Devices: up to five Macs that you personally own. The licence is personal and tied to your email. Teams and organisations need separate terms; contact SuprFlow.
  • Updates: "Your purchase includes lifetime free updates." The same clause reserves the right to change what counts as a "major version" in future. SuprFlow lifetime updates: what to confirm explains that caveat.
  • Refund: 7 days, no questions asked, on a first purchase only.
  • Trial: none, and no free tier. The refund window is your trial.

Where it loses: it is the second most expensive one-time option here, it is Mac only, it has no file transcription or meeting recorder, and its source is not public. VoiceInk is cheaper and open source. Superwhisper's free tier and Handy cost nothing. The $125 makes sense mainly if you have several Macs of your own, since one licence covers five, and you want a single simple app.

When is a subscription the better deal?

List prices as of 1 October 2026, one person, before tax.

OptionAfter 1 yearAfter 3 years
VoiceInk, one Mac$25$25
SuprFlow$125$125
Superwhisper Lifetime$249.99$249.99
Superwhisper Pro, annual$84.99$254.97
Wispr Flow Pro, annual$144$432
Wispr Flow Pro, monthly, for 3 months only$45$45

A subscription wins when you need dictation briefly, when you need phone and Windows apps that the one-time Mac apps lack, or when the service's cloud features are the point. Three months of Wispr Flow Pro costs less than SuprFlow. A one-time licence wins when you will use the same Mac app for years. Wispr Flow pricing has a fuller multi-year table.

What should you check before buying a lifetime dictation app?

  1. Read the update clause. "Lifetime" usually means the life of the product, not yours. Look for wording about major versions.
  2. Count devices. VoiceInk prices by Mac. SuprFlow covers five personal Macs. Superwhisper has no device limit.
  3. Check who may use it. A personal licence does not cover a team.
  4. Note the refund window and set a reminder: 7 days for SuprFlow, 14 for VoiceInk, 30 for Superwhisper.
  5. Look for running costs. Features that call a cloud AI provider with your own key are billed by that provider.
  6. Save the terms as they were on the day you bought.

How do you test before the refund window closes?

Spend 15 minutes with a made-up passage, in the app you write in most:

"Hi Tomasz, invoice 2207 is for 1,940 dollars, not 1,490. It is due on the 30th. Please copy Dr. Mbeki and, um, actually copy Renée as well."

  1. Dictate it with free Apple Dictation first and count the corrections.
  2. Dictate it in the app you are considering: VoiceInk's free trial, MacWhisper's or Superwhisper's free version, or SuprFlow within its 7-day refund period.
  3. Check both names, the invoice number, both amounts and the date.
  4. Repeat in a second app you use daily, such as a browser form or chat.
  5. Turn Wi-Fi off and try once more if offline use matters.

If the paid app did not clearly beat the free one, do not buy it, or ask for the refund.

Questions people ask

Is there a dictation app for Mac with no subscription?

Yes. Apple Dictation and Handy are free. VoiceInk, MacWhisper Pro, SuprFlow and Superwhisper Lifetime are one-time purchases.

Does Wispr Flow have a lifetime plan?

No. Wispr's pricing page lists monthly and annual subscriptions only.

What does a lifetime licence for a dictation app usually cover?

The vendors here describe continued use of the app and its updates. Terms differ on devices, major versions and refunds, so read each one. For SuprFlow's clause see the lifetime updates guide.

Is a one-time purchase always cheaper than a subscription?

No. For a few months of use, a monthly plan costs less. Free vs paid Mac dictation covers the other costs to count.
