MacWhisper does two jobs, so the right alternative depends on which one you want replaced. For transcribing recordings, the closest substitute is Superwhisper Pro, and Otter is the cloud route for meeting notes. For live dictation into other apps, look at Superwhisper's free plan, Wispr Flow, the Dictation built into macOS, or SuprFlow. If you need both jobs on a Mac and want to pay once, MacWhisper is still hard to replace, and you should probably keep it.
Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.
We have not benchmarked these apps against each other. The differences below are documented ones: editions, platforms, price models and where speech is processed.
Why do people look for an alternative to MacWhisper?
MacWhisper's own pages describe each of these limits.
- Dictation depends on which edition you bought. The edition comparison says the direct download "allows dictation into any text field on your Mac". The Mac App Store edition is a separate product named Whisper Transcription, sold by subscription, and the dictation article says dictation is not available there.
- AI cleanup is not built in. AI prompts need a Pro licence plus your own API key with a provider, billed by that provider, or a local model through Ollama or LM Studio.
- The direct download is Mac only. The App Store edition covers Mac, iPhone and iPad. Neither edition lists Windows or Android.
- Dictation is one feature of a transcription app. If you never open a recording, most of the app is not for you.
What MacWhisper does well: it transcribes files and meetings on your Mac by default, according to its privacy article; it exports transcripts and subtitles; and macwhisper.com lists a "Free forever" version and Pro as "Pay Once" at €64. If recordings are your main work, stay with it.
Which MacWhisper alternatives fit which job?
Prices as of 1 October 2026, from each vendor's own page.
| Alternative | Where speech is processed | Price model | Platforms | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Superwhisper | Your choice per mode: on the device or in the cloud | Free plan; Pro $8.49 a month, $84.99 a year, or $249.99 once (plans) | macOS 14 or later, Windows, iOS, Android | Dictation first, with file transcription on Pro |
| Otter | In Otter's cloud | Basic free with 300 minutes a month; Pro $16.99 a month, or $8.33 a month billed annually (pricing) | Web, Mac and Windows desktop app, iOS, Android | Meeting notes shared with a team |
| Wispr Flow | In Wispr's cloud | Free with 2,000 words a week on desktop; Pro $15 a month, or $12 billed annually (pricing) | Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android | Dictation with cleanup included |
| Apple Dictation | On the Mac or Apple's servers, depending on Mac and language | Included with macOS (guide) | Mac | Occasional dictation at no cost |

If you want to replace the transcription workspace
Superwhisper Pro
Superwhisper's plans page lists file transcription, system audio recording and speaker separation under Pro. It is dictation-first, so do not expect MacWhisper's depth in subtitles and batch jobs; test your own export needs. The Lifetime price, $249.99, is well above MacWhisper's €64. Its advantage is reach: the same licence works on Windows and phones. Superwhisper vs MacWhisper compares them directly.
Otter
Otter calls itself an AI notetaker that "transcribes every meeting", joins Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams calls, and writes summaries and action items. It is a cloud subscription, the opposite of MacWhisper's local, pay-once design. Choose it when shared meeting notes matter more than keeping audio on your Mac. The free Basic plan allows three lifetime file imports, so it is not a tool for a backlog of recordings.
Running Whisper yourself
MacWhisper is a friendly front end for speech models you can also run directly. If you are comfortable in Terminal, How to run Whisper on a Mac walks through that route, and How to transcribe a voice memo on a Mac covers the simplest cases.
If you want to replace the dictation feature
Superwhisper Free
The free plan includes "unlimited dictation with any local Whisper model", custom vocabulary and text replacements, with no edition to get wrong. AI-formatted modes need Pro, but they are included there with no API key to manage.
Wispr Flow
Wispr's help centre says Flow cleans up filler words, punctuation and self-corrections as part of the service, on phones and Windows as well as the Mac. Its docs also say an internet connection is required. MacWhisper vs Wispr Flow has the full comparison.
Apple Dictation
It is already installed. Turn it on under System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation. For a few short messages a day it may be all you need, and it works in any edition of anything. How to use voice to text on a Mac
SuprFlow
SuprFlow does the dictation half only. Hold Fn, speak, release, and text is pasted at the cursor, with speech recognised on the Mac after a one-time model download. Default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers, and there is a personal dictionary and voice snippets. It costs $125 once for up to five Macs you own.
It is not a MacWhisper replacement for recordings. SuprFlow cannot transcribe an audio file or record a meeting. It also costs more than MacWhisper Pro, has no free version or trial, no Windows or iPhone app, and its source is not public. If MacWhisper's free dictation already works for you, there is nothing to gain. SuprFlow vs MacWhisper
How do you test an alternative in 15 minutes?
Use a made-up recording and a made-up message.
- Record yourself reading: "Call notes, Thursday. Speaking with Anneli Voss about the Tarn Street lease. Rent is 2,850 a month, not 2,580. She will reply by the 22nd."
- Transcribe the file in MacWhisper and note any fixes to the name, street, amounts and date.
- If transcription is the job, give the same file to the alternative. Check the same items and try the export format you need.
- If dictation is the job, open a blank email and speak the passage live in MacWhisper's direct-download edition, then in the alternative.
- Turn Wi-Fi off and repeat one step, to see which app still works.
The step that looked like your real week tells you which job to shop for.
