The best dictation app for a Mac depends on what you need it to do. If you want free voice to text, start with the Dictation built into macOS. If speech must be recognised on the Mac, look at Superwhisper's free tier, VoiceInk, Handy or SuprFlow. If you want one account on a Mac, a Windows PC and a phone, look at Wispr Flow. If you mostly transcribe recordings and meetings, look at MacWhisper. There is no honest single winner, so this page is organised by need.
Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.
We have not run a controlled benchmark of accuracy or speed across these apps, so nothing here is ranked or scored. A 15-minute test you can run yourself is near the end.

Apple Dictation: the free built-in baseline
Apple's Dictation guide for macOS 27 says you turn it on under Apple menu → System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation, and that the text below the Dictation setting tells you whether general dictation is "processed on your device and not sent to Siri servers". If your macOS version looks different, search System Settings for "Dictation". Apple says you can dictate text of any length without a timeout, that Dictation stops after 30 seconds of silence, and that commas, periods and question marks are added automatically in supported languages.
Choose it if you dictate occasionally and are happy to say "new paragraph" yourself. It costs nothing, so test it before anything else. SuprFlow vs Apple Dictation covers when the built-in tool is enough.
Wispr Flow: cross-platform cloud dictation
Wispr's pricing page lists dictation on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, a dictionary, snippets, 100+ languages and a meeting Notetaker. Wispr's help centre says Flow cleans up filler words, punctuation and spoken self-corrections, and that an internet connection is required because dictation is transcribed in the cloud.
Choose it if you move between devices, are nearly always online, and want teams, SSO or audit reports. See Wispr Flow pricing and Is Wispr Flow safe?.
Superwhisper: local or cloud, your choice per mode
Superwhisper's plans page says the Free plan gives unlimited dictation with local Whisper models, up to two modes, custom vocabulary and text replacements, and that nothing you dictate on it leaves your device. Pro ($8.49 a month, $84.99 a year or $249.99 once) adds cloud voice models, AI-formatted modes, file transcription and more. It runs on macOS 14 or later, Windows, iOS and Android.
Choose it if you want to mix local and cloud models and are willing to configure modes. Superwhisper vs Wispr Flow and Superwhisper vs MacWhisper go deeper.
MacWhisper: files and meetings first
MacWhisper is built around dragging in recordings, recording meetings without a bot, and exporting transcripts and subtitles. It also has system-wide dictation, but only in the direct-download edition, not in the Mac App Store edition called Whisper Transcription. Pro is listed as "Pay Once", €64 per licence, with lifetime updates.
Choose it if recordings are your main job. MacWhisper vs Wispr Flow explains the difference from a live dictation app.
Handy and VoiceInk: open source
Handy describes itself as "a free, open source, and extensible speech-to-text application that works completely offline", under the MIT licence, for macOS, Windows and Linux. VoiceInk publishes its source under GPL v3; the packaged app costs $25 once for one Mac and requires Apple Silicon and macOS 14.4 or later. More projects are in Open-source Wispr Flow alternatives.
SuprFlow: local speech, one price
SuprFlow is a Mac menu-bar app for Apple Silicon and macOS 14 or later. You hold the Fn key, speak, and release; a WhisperKit model on the Mac recognises the speech and the text is pasted at your cursor. It has a personal dictionary, voice snippets and a local history. It costs $125 once for up to five Macs you personally own, with a 7-day refund on a first purchase.
Be clear about what it is not. There is no free tier or trial, no Windows or phone app, no meeting recorder, no file transcription and no team admin console, and its source is not public. Superwhisper's free tier and Handy also keep speech on the Mac for $0, so try those and Apple Dictation first. SuprFlow is worth a look if you want a simple push-to-talk app with no model menu to manage and no subscription. Local speech does not mean no network traffic: licence checks, model downloads, updates and usage telemetry still use the internet. Where does my dictation go? has the detail.
Other cloud apps worth knowing
Willow, Typeless and Aqua Voice are subscription dictation services with free plans. Wispr Flow vs Willow Voice and Wispr Flow vs Typeless compare them.
How do you test two apps in 15 minutes?
- Pick two apps from the table. Use the same Mac, microphone and room for both.
- Open the app you write in most, such as Mail or a browser form.
- Dictate this made-up passage: "Hi Dana, the quote is 4,250 dollars, not 4,520. Delivery is Tuesday the 9th. Um, actually, make that Wednesday the 10th. Please copy Dr. Achterberg."
- Check the name, both numbers, the date and the correction. Count the fixes you had to make.
- Repeat with Wi-Fi turned off if offline use matters to you.
- Dictate two sentences with words from your own work, then add any misses to the app's dictionary and try again.
The app that needed fewer fixes in your own apps is the better one for you.
