Wispr Flow vs Monologue (2026): which dictation app fits?

Wispr Flow or Monologue on a Mac: prices, free limits, platforms, where speech is processed, offline use, privacy settings and a test to run before you pay.

Choose Wispr Flow if you need Windows or Android as well as a Mac, want an ongoing free plan, or need vendor audit reports and a HIPAA business associate agreement for a security review. Choose Monologue if you live in Apple devices (Mac, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch), want voice notes and bot-free meeting notes in the same app, or want the option of transcribing speech on your Mac without a connection. Both cost $15 a month or $144 a year for Pro, so price will not decide it.

Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.

We make a competing Mac app and have not run a controlled benchmark of either product. Below is what each company documents, then a test you can run yourself.

Who should pick which?

  • You use Windows or Android too: Wispr Flow. Monologue's docs say it does not currently offer Windows or Android apps.
  • You are all-Apple, including iPad or Apple Watch: Monologue. Wispr's requirements page lists iPad as unsupported.
  • You sometimes dictate with no connection: Monologue's local mode on an Apple silicon Mac. Wispr Flow needs the internet.
  • You want a free plan you can stay on: Wispr Flow Free, within its weekly word limit.
  • Your security team wants audit reports or a BAA: Wispr Flow documents both. We did not find either on Monologue's public pages.

How do Wispr Flow and Monologue compare?

As of 1 October 2026. Wispr Flow details are from its pricing page, system requirements and security and compliance FAQ. Monologue details are from its home page, pricing, platform availability, languages and processing models, permissions and privacy and privacy policy.

Three rows deserve a closer look.

Monologue's local mode is partly local. Monologue's own docs are explicit: "The speech-to-text step runs locally. Smart formatting may still require a network connection." They also say local accuracy "may be lower than remote transcription" and that remote "remains the recommended option for most people." If audio must stay on the Mac, use local mode and expect raw text when you are offline.

The free options differ. Wispr's free plan is a weekly allowance. Monologue's pricing page describes a free trial with a set number of words and notes, so it is for deciding whether to buy.

Deep context reads your screen. Monologue's optional Deep context uses screen capture "to improve a result," and you can leave that permission off. The same page advises: "Do not dictate passwords, authentication codes, API keys, or other secrets." That applies to any dictation app.

Choose Wispr Flow if…

  • You need the same tool on Windows or Android.
  • You want to stay on a free plan for light use.
  • Your Mac is an Intel model. Wispr lists Intel support; Monologue's local mode is Apple silicon only.
  • A security review needs SOC 2, ISO 27001 or a signed BAA. See Is Wispr Flow safe?.

Choose Monologue if…

  • You want an iPad or Apple Watch app.
  • You sometimes need to dictate with no connection and can accept raw text when offline.
  • You want voice notes, meeting notes and dictation in one app, or want AI agents to read your notes over MCP, API or CLI.
  • You already pay for Every, which includes Monologue Pro.

How do you test both in 15 minutes?

Monologue's trial is limited to 1,000 words, so plan first.

  1. Install both and grant Microphone and Accessibility. Leave Monologue's optional Screen Recording off for a like-for-like test.
  2. Use each app's default shortcut. Monologue's Mac setup guide says its default push-to-talk key is the right-side Option key.
  3. In your mail app, dictate: "Hi Tomasz, the total is 6,240 dollars, sorry, 6,420 dollars. Can we meet Tuesday the 21st at 10:15? Copy Dr. Achebe-Lund. Thanks."
  4. Check the name, the corrected amount, the date and the time.
  5. Turn Wi-Fi off. Expect Wispr Flow to stop. Switch Monologue to Local under Settings → Dictation → Transcription source (after downloading the model) and compare its raw result.
  6. Dictate two sentences full of your own names and jargon, add misses to each dictionary, and retry.

Fewer fixes in your own apps is the result that matters.

A third option

If you use only a Mac and want speech recognised on it every time, SuprFlow is a smaller tool: hold the Fn key, speak, release, and the text is pasted at your cursor. Its speech recognition runs on the Mac with a downloaded model, and its Default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers. It costs $125 once for up to five Macs you own, with no free tier or trial. It has no Windows, iPhone or iPad app, no voice notes, no meeting recorder and no audit reports or BAA, so both products above do more. SuprFlow vs Wispr Flow has the details.

Questions people ask

Is Monologue better than Wispr Flow?

Neither is better for everyone. Monologue covers more Apple devices and offers local transcription; Wispr Flow covers Windows and Android, has a free plan and publishes audit reports. Test both.

Does Monologue work offline?

Partly. Its docs say local mode on an Apple silicon Mac can produce a raw transcript without a connection, but smart cleanup and formatting need the online service.

How much does Monologue cost?

Monologue Pro is $15 a month or $144 a year, as of 1 October 2026. It is also included with an Every subscription.

Does Monologue train on my dictation?

Its privacy policy says it will not train AI models on your PII, audio or transcripts, and that it uses transcripts to improve the service only if you turn that on. Its third-party AI providers have their own terms.
