Apple Dictation alternatives for Mac (2026): when to switch

When to stay with Apple Dictation and when to switch: Voice Control, Superwhisper, Handy, Wispr Flow, MacWhisper and SuprFlow compared for Mac users.

The best alternative to Apple Dictation on a Mac depends on what the built-in tool will not do for you. If it keeps getting names wrong or you want to edit by voice, Apple's own Voice Control is the first thing to try. If you want hold-to-talk dictation with a speech model on your Mac, try Superwhisper's free plan or Handy, or SuprFlow if you prefer to buy one app outright. If you want filler words and self-corrections cleaned up across your devices, look at Wispr Flow. If you need to transcribe recordings, use MacWhisper. And if your Mac has Apple's newest Dictation, staying may be the right answer.

Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.

When is staying with Apple Dictation the right call?

Apple Dictation is free, already installed, and it improved in September 2026. Apple's newsroom post of 14 September 2026 says Dictation "now captures what users say as polished text with greater precision, automatically handling capitalization, punctuation, and formatting as they speak." Apple lists that for a Mac with M3 or later and at least 12GB of unified memory, and its feature availability page lists "More advanced Dictation" for English only.

Stay with Apple if you dictate a few messages a day, if your Mac and language qualify for that newer Dictation and its output needs few fixes, or if you would rather not install or pay for anything.

If you searched for enhanced dictation on a Mac, the place to look in current macOS is System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation. The text under the switch tells you whether general dictation is processed on your device. Is Mac Dictation private? explains that note.

Why do people look for an alternative to Apple Dictation?

These come from Apple's own Dictation guide for macOS 27, not from complaints.

  • It stops when you pause. Apple says Dictation stops automatically when no speech is detected for 30 seconds.
  • There is no word list to edit. Apple's Dictation guide describes no custom vocabulary. That lives in Voice Control.
  • Start and stop are key presses. The guide describes pressing the Microphone key or a shortcut to start and again to stop. It does not describe a hold-to-talk mode.
  • The newest cleanup is limited by hardware and language: M3 or later, 12GB of memory, English.
  • It is for live speech. The guide describes no way to give Dictation an audio file.
  • Processing depends on your setup. Whether speech stays on the Mac varies by Mac and language, and Apple's troubleshooting page says "You may need an internet connection."

Apple Voice Control: the alternative you already own

Before installing anything, check Voice Control. Apple's Voice Control guide says you can "navigate the desktop and apps, interact with what's on the screen, dictate and edit text, and more." It has a custom vocabulary under System Settings → Accessibility → Voice Control, which fixes the missing word list. Apple's setup page says the first use needs a one-time download, after which no internet connection is needed. Two things to know: it is a separate mode with its own commands to learn, and Apple says standard Dictation is not available while Voice Control is on.

Superwhisper Free and Handy: push-to-talk for $0

Superwhisper's plans page says the Free plan includes "unlimited dictation with any local Whisper model", custom vocabulary and text replacements. Handy calls itself "a free, open source, and extensible speech-to-text application that works completely offline". Both give you a shortcut-driven app with the speech model on your Mac. Neither costs anything, so try them before a paid app. Best dictation app for Mac

Wispr Flow: cleanup and phones

Wispr's help centre says Flow cleans up filler words, punctuation and spoken self-corrections, and it has a dictionary and snippets that follow you to Windows, iPhone and Android. It is a cloud service: its docs say an internet connection is required. Wispr Flow vs Apple Dictation

MacWhisper: for recordings

Dictation types what you say now. MacWhisper transcribes what was said earlier: interviews, lectures, meetings. If that is the gap, no dictation app will fill it. For a single voice memo, see How to transcribe a voice memo on a Mac first.

SuprFlow: hold a key, speak, release

SuprFlow is a Mac menu-bar app. Hold the Fn key, speak, and release, and the text is pasted at your cursor; pressing Space while holding Fn locks recording hands-free. Speech is recognised on the Mac after a one-time model download. Default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers. It adds a personal dictionary, voice snippets and a local history, and costs $125 once for up to five Macs you personally own, with a 7-day refund on a first purchase.

It is not for everyone leaving Apple Dictation. It is not free and has no trial. It needs Apple Silicon. It has no iPhone or Windows app, no file transcription, and no voice commands for editing or controlling the Mac, so it does not replace Voice Control. Its source is not public, and licence checks, updates and usage telemetry use the network. If Apple's newer Dictation already gives you clean text, the main things SuprFlow adds are the hold-to-talk key, the dictionary and snippets. SuprFlow vs Apple Dictation

How do you test an alternative in 15 minutes?

  1. Turn on Apple Dictation and read the note under the switch.
  2. In the app you write in most, dictate this made-up passage: "Hi Bronwyn, the tickets cost 386 dollars, not 368. We leave on Friday the 6th. Um, sorry, Saturday the 7th. Please tell Dr. Szymanski."
  3. Count the fixes: two names, two amounts, the corrected day and date, and the punctuation.
  4. Pause for 40 seconds mid-sentence and see whether Dictation is still listening.
  5. Install one free alternative and repeat steps 2 and 3 in the same app.
  6. Add "Szymanski" to the alternative's dictionary, or to Voice Control's vocabulary, and try again.

If Apple needed one or two fixes, you do not need another app.

Questions people ask

Is there a better dictation app for Mac than the built-in one?

Better for a particular need, yes; better overall has not been shown, and we have not benchmarked it. Pick by the limit you hit: vocabulary, hold-to-talk, cleanup or recordings.

What is the best free alternative to Apple Dictation?

Voice Control if you want Apple's own tool, then Superwhisper Free or Handy. See Free Wispr Flow alternatives.

Does Apple Dictation work offline?

It depends on your Mac and language. Check the text under the Dictation switch in Keyboard settings. Apps that run a model on the Mac are listed in Offline voice to text on Mac.

Can I add my own words to Apple Dictation?

Apple's Dictation guide describes no editable word list. Voice Control has a custom vocabulary, and third-party apps such as Superwhisper, Wispr Flow and SuprFlow have their own dictionaries.
