The best Superwhisper alternative depends on what sent you looking. If you want cleaned-up text without choosing models or modes, try Wispr Flow. If file transcription is the only reason you would pay for Pro, MacWhisper Pro costs less. If you want a smaller one-time price with speech recognised on the Mac, look at VoiceInk ($25) or SuprFlow ($125), and if you want free and open source, look at Handy. If Superwhisper's free plan already does what you need, staying is the right call.
Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.
We have not run a controlled benchmark of any of these apps, so nothing here is ranked by accuracy or speed.
Why do people look for an alternative to Superwhisper?
These are the limits Superwhisper documents itself. We are not reporting anyone's complaints.
- The free plan has no AI formatting. The plans page says Free includes "unlimited dictation with any local Whisper model, custom vocabulary, text replacements, and up to two modes without AI processing". File transcription, AI-powered modes and cloud models are Pro features.
- Pro is a subscription or a large one-time payment. The same page lists $8.49 a month, $84.99 a year, or $249.99 once.
- Each mode has two settings to get right. Superwhisper's sensitive-data guide explains that a dictation has a voice-to-text stage and an optional language-model stage, and each can be local or cloud. Pick a cloud voice model and the audio leaves the Mac. That flexibility is a feature for some people and a chore for others.
- Older Macs. The quickstart lists macOS 14 or later, and Superwhisper's site says Intel Macs "work best with Cloud models".
What Superwhisper does well is just as clear. Free local dictation has no word cap. One Pro licence covers "unlimited Macs and Windows PCs, plus your iPhone and Android phone". There is a lifetime option and a 30-day refund. If you dictate with a local Whisper model and do not need AI formatting, nothing below beats free. Stay.
Which Superwhisper alternatives are worth trying?
Prices as of 1 October 2026, from each vendor's own page.
| Alternative | Where speech is processed | Price model | Platforms | Best for |

| VoiceInk | On the Mac; optional Cloud Enhancement sends text, not voice | $25 once for one Mac (site) | Apple Silicon Mac, macOS 14.4 or later | Lowest one-time price, public source code |

Wispr Flow: if you are tired of choosing models
Wispr Flow has no model menu. Its help centre says Flow cleans up filler words, punctuation and spoken self-corrections as part of the service, and that cleanup is included on the free plan up to the weekly word limit. Its system requirements list macOS 12 and Intel Macs, which helps on older hardware.
The cost of that simplicity is the cloud. Wispr's docs say an internet connection is required, and there is no one-time licence. Superwhisper vs Wispr Flow compares the two line by line.
MacWhisper: if file transcription is why you would upgrade
Superwhisper puts file transcription behind Pro. MacWhisper is built around it: drag in recordings, record meetings, export transcripts and subtitles. Pro is "Pay Once" at €64, a far lower list price than Superwhisper's Lifetime licence. It also has system-wide dictation, but only in the direct-download edition, and its AI prompts need your own provider API key or a local model. It has no Windows or Android app. See Superwhisper vs MacWhisper.
VoiceInk: if $249.99 is too much to pay once
VoiceInk's site lists $25 for one Mac, $39 for two and $49 for three, each a one-time purchase with a free trial and a 14-day money-back guarantee. Transcription runs on the Mac, and the source code is public under GPL v3. It requires Apple Silicon and macOS 14.4 or later, and the site lists no Windows version. SuprFlow vs VoiceInk has more.
Handy: if you want free and open
Handy describes itself as "a free, open source, and extensible speech-to-text application that works completely offline". Press a shortcut, speak, and the text lands in the field you are in. It is a simple transcription tool by design, so it does not replace Superwhisper's AI modes. It does replace the free plan's basic job, and it runs on Windows and Linux too. SuprFlow vs Handy
SuprFlow: if you want one setting instead of many
SuprFlow is a Mac menu-bar app. Hold the Fn key, speak, release, and the text is pasted at your cursor. Speech is recognised on the Mac after a one-time model download. The default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers. There is a personal dictionary, voice snippets and a local history. It costs $125 once for up to five Macs you personally own, with a 7-day refund on a first purchase.
Be clear about where it loses. Superwhisper Free already recognises speech on the Mac for $0, and SuprFlow has no free tier or trial. It has no Windows or phone app, no file transcription, no meeting recorder, no cloud speech models, and its source is not public. Local speech also does not mean no network traffic: licence checks, updates and usage telemetry use the internet. It fits a Mac-only user who wants to pay less than $249.99 once and never open a model list. SuprFlow vs Superwhisper
How do you test an alternative in 15 minutes?
Use the same Mac, microphone and room, and a made-up passage so nothing private is involved.
- In Superwhisper, note the voice model and mode you normally use.
- Open the app you write in most and dictate: "Hi Priya, the print run is 3,600 copies, not 3,060. Proofs are due on the 14th. Um, sorry, the 15th. Please copy Dr. Lindqvist."
- Count the fixes: the two names, both numbers, the date and the correction.
- Install one alternative from the table and dictate the same passage in the same app.
- Turn Wi-Fi off and repeat in both, if offline use matters to you.
- Dictate two sentences of your own jargon, add any misses to each app's vocabulary, and retry.
Switch only if the alternative needed fewer fixes or solved the reason you came here.
Questions people ask
Is there a free alternative to Superwhisper?
Yes. Handy is free and open source, and Apple Dictation is built into macOS. Superwhisper's own free plan also stays free with local Whisper models, so check whether you need to leave at all. More options are in Free Wispr Flow alternatives.
Which Superwhisper alternative works without internet?
MacWhisper, VoiceInk, Handy and SuprFlow recognise speech on the Mac. Wispr Flow does not. Offline voice to text on Mac covers the details.
Is there a cheaper lifetime licence than Superwhisper's?
On list price, yes: VoiceInk at $25 for one Mac, MacWhisper Pro at €64 and SuprFlow at $125 are all one-time purchases below $249.99. None includes Superwhisper's cloud models or its Windows and phone apps.
Which alternative also runs on Windows or a phone?
Wispr Flow covers Windows, iPhone and Android. Handy covers Windows and Linux. MacWhisper's direct download, VoiceInk's desktop app and SuprFlow are Mac only.
