BetterDictation alternatives for Mac (2026): by reason

BetterDictation needs Apple Silicon, has no Windows app yet and no free tier. Compare VoiceInk, Superwhisper, Wispr Flow, Handy, MacWhisper and SuprFlow.

Most reasons to look past BetterDictation are about hardware, platforms and trying before you pay, because at $39 once for one Mac it is already one of the cheaper local dictation apps. If your Mac has an Intel chip, try Wispr Flow or Apple's built-in Dictation. If you also need Windows, try Superwhisper, Wispr Flow or Handy. If you want to try something free first, Superwhisper's free plan, Handy and Apple Dictation cost nothing. If you transcribe recordings or meetings, look at MacWhisper or Monologue. If BetterDictation runs on your Mac and you like it, keep it.

Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.

We have not benchmarked BetterDictation or any alternative for accuracy or speed.

What is BetterDictation?

BetterDictation is a paid Mac dictation app. Its site says it is "Powered by OpenAI's Whisper, running entirely on Apple's Neural Engine", and its FAQ names the whisper-large-v3-turbo model. You hold a shortcut, speak, and it types the result into the app you are using. Basic costs $39 once for one Mac, Flex $49 for three and Studio $149 for ten, as of 1 October 2026. An optional Pro add-on, $2 a month billed annually, removes filler words, formats lists and fixes grammar.

Why do people look for an alternative to BetterDictation?

These limits come from BetterDictation's own pages.

  • Apple Silicon only. Its FAQ says it "isn't supported on Intel Macs" and requires M1 or newer. Its user guide says to run macOS Sonoma 14.4 or later.
  • Mac only for now. The home page says "Now on macOS · Windows soon" and offers an email sign-up for Windows.
  • No free tier. The install page says "BetterDictation is a paid product" and you need a licence key to install it. There is a 14-day money-back guarantee instead of a trial.
  • AI cleanup goes to OpenAI. Its privacy policy says that with Pro, "your transcribed text (but not your audio) will be processed through OpenAI's services". You can edit the prompt, but the pages we read do not offer another provider or a local model for that step.

What BetterDictation does well is just as clear. Speech recognition runs on the Mac, its FAQ says it works offline without Pro, and the privacy policy says the only data it sends to its servers is basic telemetry (performance and crash reports) and that "No audio recordings are ever transmitted from your device." It supports push-to-talk and toggle modes, model presets for switching languages, and 100+ languages. For local dictation on one to three Macs, few paid apps cost less.

VoiceInk: cheaper, open source, with a trial

VoiceInk's site says it "processes all voice transcription locally on your device", and that optional Cloud Enhancement sends "only transcribed text (not your voice)". It costs $25 for one Mac, $39 for two or $49 for three, with a free trial and a 14-day money-back guarantee, and it is built in public on GitHub. It has the same Apple Silicon requirement, so it does not help on an Intel Mac. VoiceInk alternatives

Superwhisper: a free plan and more devices

Superwhisper's plans page says the free plan gives "unlimited dictation with local Whisper models", and that a Pro licence works on "unlimited Macs and Windows PCs, plus your iPhone and Android phone". Pro also adds cloud models and AI modes, so check whether each mode is local or cloud. Superwhisper alternatives

Wispr Flow: for Intel Macs and Windows

Wispr's system requirements list macOS 12 or later on Apple Silicon or Intel, plus Windows, iPhone and Android. The trade-off is the cloud: its docs say an internet connection is required because dictation is transcribed in the cloud. If local speech was why you chose BetterDictation, this gives it up. Is Wispr Flow safe?

Handy: free and open source

Handy describes itself as "a free, open source, and extensible speech-to-text application that works completely offline", and it runs on macOS, Windows and Linux. SuprFlow vs Handy

MacWhisper or Monologue: if you also work with recordings

BetterDictation's pages describe dictation, not file or meeting transcription. MacWhisper transcribes audio and video files and records online meetings without a bot, with Pro at €64 once. Monologue adds voice notes and bot-free meeting notes on a $15-a-month or $144-a-year subscription, and processes audio remotely by default. Monologue alternatives

SuprFlow: when would it make sense instead?

SuprFlow is a Mac menu-bar app: hold Fn, speak, release, and the text is pasted at your cursor. Speech is recognised on the Mac with a downloaded model. Default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers, with no add-on fee, and optional formatting can go to a Cloud API provider you choose (text, not audio) or to Ollama on the Mac. It has a personal dictionary, voice snippets and a local history.

It does not solve the usual reasons for leaving BetterDictation. It also requires Apple Silicon, it is Mac only, and it has no free tier or trial (a 7-day refund on a first purchase, against BetterDictation's 14 days). It costs $125 once against $39, so for one to three Macs BetterDictation is cheaper. It fits someone with four or five personal Macs, or who wants local cleanup without a subscription. SuprFlow vs BetterDictation

How do you test an alternative in 15 minutes?

  1. Check your Mac's chip and macOS version first.
  2. In BetterDictation, if it runs, dictate this made-up passage into your most-used app: "Hi Ottilie, the quote is 1,640 pounds, not 1,460. Fitting is on the 5th. Um, sorry, the 6th. Please copy Dr. Mbeki-Larsen."
  3. Count fixes to the names, both amounts and the corrected date.
  4. Install one alternative and dictate the same passage in the same app.
  5. Turn Wi-Fi off and repeat, if offline use matters to you.

Switch only if the alternative runs where BetterDictation cannot, or needed fewer fixes.

Questions people ask

Is there a free alternative to BetterDictation?

Yes. Handy is free and open source, Superwhisper has a free plan with local Whisper models, and Apple Dictation is built into macOS. VoiceInk has a free trial before you pay.

Does BetterDictation work on Windows or an Intel Mac?

Not yet on Windows; its site says Windows is coming. It does not support Intel Macs. Wispr Flow covers both, but transcribes in the cloud.

Is there a BetterDictation alternative that keeps AI cleanup off OpenAI?

SuprFlow's Default formatting runs on the Mac, and its optional formatting can use a provider you choose or a local Ollama model. Check any app's settings to see where each step runs.
