Willow Voice alternatives for Mac (2026): cloud and local

Willow Voice alternatives by reason: Wispr Flow for Android and meeting notes, Aqua Voice on price, Superwhisper, Spokenly and SuprFlow for local speech.

The best Willow Voice alternative depends on what Willow is missing for you. If you need an Android app or meeting notes, Wispr Flow is the nearest match at the same price. If you want a cheaper cloud subscription, Aqua Voice lists a lower one. If you want speech recognised on your own device, look at Superwhisper or Spokenly, which both have free local options, or at SuprFlow if you only use Macs and want to pay once. If Willow's defaults and platforms suit you, there is no strong reason to move.

Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.

We have not run a controlled benchmark of Willow or any alternative, so this page does not say which transcribes best.

Why do people look for an alternative to Willow Voice?

Each reason below comes from Willow's own pages.

  • Dictation runs in the cloud. Willow's privacy policy says it "uses cloud infrastructure" for dictation. Its homepage and security page mention an offline mode, and its plans overview lists "Offline dictation" under Individual Pro. Those pages do not fully agree, so if offline work matters, turn Wi-Fi off during a trial and see what your plan does.
  • It is subscription only. The pricing page lists Pro at $15 a month, or $12 a month billed annually. No one-time licence is listed.
  • No Android app yet. The download page says "Coming soon on Android".
  • The free plan is described two ways. The pricing page describes an "Unlimited weaker speech-to-text model (Frontier Mini)". The plans overview lists a limit of 2,000 words a week on Free. Check the app before you rely on either.

What Willow does well: its privacy policy says Private Mode is the default, with no retention of audio or dictated text and no training on them. It runs on Mac, Windows and iPhone, and offers Willow Scribe for drafting from a spoken request. If cloud processing is acceptable and you like a no-training default you do not have to switch on, Willow is a reasonable place to stay.

Wispr Flow: the closest like-for-like swap

Wispr Flow works the way Willow does: hold Fn, speak, release, and cleaned-up text appears. What it adds is an Android app and a meeting Notetaker, which its pricing page lists for Mac and Windows. What changes is the privacy starting point. Wispr's security overview says "Improve the model for everyone" is on by default for Free and Pro; you can turn it off. Wispr's docs also say an internet connection is required. Wispr Flow vs Willow Voice goes through every row.

Aqua Voice: a cheaper cloud subscription

Aqua's pricing page lists Pro at $10 a month, or $8 a month billed annually, with unlimited words. That is the lowest list price among the cloud apps here. Its Mac page is direct about the architecture: "Aqua processes audio in the cloud, where the Avalon model runs; there is no offline mode." Realtime Mode is listed under the Max plan, and Zero Data Retention under Business, so read which plan carries the control you care about. SuprFlow vs Aqua Voice

Superwhisper: local speech without giving up your phone

If the cloud is your reason for leaving, Superwhisper lets you choose. Its plans page says the Free plan includes "unlimited dictation with any local Whisper model", and one Pro licence covers Macs, Windows PCs, iPhone and Android. AI-formatted modes, the nearest thing to Willow's polished output, are Pro features. You will also choose models and modes yourself, which Willow never asks of you. Superwhisper alternatives for Mac lists its own trade-offs.

Spokenly: free local models on four platforms

Spokenly's pricing page says local Whisper and Parakeet models are "free forever" with unlimited use, on macOS, Windows, Linux and iOS. Its Local Only Mode is documented as a network block with exceptions for model downloads and localhost. Hosted AI cleanup and cloud models need Pro or your own API keys. SuprFlow vs Spokenly

SuprFlow: Mac only, local speech, one payment

SuprFlow is a Mac menu-bar app: hold Fn, speak, release, and the text is pasted at your cursor. Speech is recognised on the Mac after a one-time model download. Default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers. It has a personal dictionary and voice snippets, and costs $125 once for up to five Macs you personally own, with a 7-day refund on a first purchase.

It is the wrong choice for many Willow users. There is no Windows or iPhone app, no free tier or trial, no team console, and nothing like Willow Scribe. Superwhisper Free and Spokenly's local models also keep speech on the device for $0, so try those first. Local speech is not the same as no network traffic: licence checks, updates and usage telemetry still use the internet. SuprFlow vs Willow Voice covers the pairing.

How do you test an alternative in 15 minutes?

Willow and Wispr Flow both use the Fn key by default, as does SuprFlow, so quit one app before testing another.

  1. In the app you write in most, dictate this made-up message with Willow: "Hi Sorcha, the deposit is 1,150 pounds, not 1,510. Viewing is at 4:45 on Monday the 7th. Um, no, Tuesday the 8th. Copy Mr. Abiodun."
  2. Count fixes to the two names, both amounts, the time and the corrected day.
  3. Quit Willow, install one alternative and dictate the same message in the same app.
  4. Turn Wi-Fi off and repeat with each. Note which app still returns text.
  5. Open each app's privacy settings and set them as you would really use them.

Fewer fixes in your own apps, with settings you accept, is the result that counts.
