The right Aqua Voice alternative depends on which limit you hit. If you need dictation that works without internet, use an app that runs the speech model on your Mac: Superwhisper, FluidVoice or SuprFlow. If you ran through Aqua's 1,000 free words and want a free plan that renews, Wispr Flow and Willow both have one. If you want to stop paying monthly, Superwhisper and SuprFlow sell one-time licences. If you are online all day and Aqua's Pro plan suits you, it is already the cheapest cloud subscription on this page.
Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.
We have not benchmarked Aqua Voice or any alternative for speed or accuracy.
Why do people look for an alternative to Aqua Voice?
Aqua states these limits on its own pages.
- No offline mode. Aqua's Mac page says: "Aqua processes audio in the cloud, where the Avalon model runs; there is no offline mode."
- The free tier is small. The pricing page lists "1,000 free words", which the Mac page describes as "about 7 minutes of talking at a normal pace". The pages do not describe a weekly refill, so treat it as a trial and check the counter in the app.
- Some features sit on higher plans. Realtime Mode, which shows words live, is listed under Max at $30 a month, or $24 a month billed annually. Zero Data Retention and SSO are listed under Business, which has a two-seat minimum.
- Subscription only, and Android is not open yet. No one-time licence is listed, and the pricing page says "Android is waitlist-only".
What Aqua does well: Pro is $10 a month, or $8 a month billed annually, with unlimited words. One universal download "runs natively on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs", and there are Windows and iOS apps. If you are always connected and cloud processing is acceptable for what you dictate, Aqua Pro is good value and you may not need to move.

If you need dictation to work offline
Superwhisper
Superwhisper's plans page says its Free plan includes "unlimited dictation with any local Whisper model", so offline dictation costs nothing. Pro adds cloud models and AI-formatted modes, and one licence covers Macs, Windows PCs, iPhone and Android, which Aqua's waitlist does not yet. On an Intel Mac, note that Superwhisper's site says those machines "work best with Cloud models". SuprFlow vs Superwhisper
FluidVoice
FluidVoice is free under GPLv3, and its download page says no account is needed. It runs local speech models on the Mac, with Whisper offered for Intel Macs, and requires macOS 15 or newer. An optional AI enhancement step can call cloud providers if you switch it on. SuprFlow vs FluidVoice
SuprFlow
SuprFlow is a Mac menu-bar app: hold Fn, speak, release, and text is pasted at your cursor. Speech is recognised on the Mac after a one-time model download, and the default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers. It has a personal dictionary and voice snippets. The price is $125 once for up to five Macs you personally own, with a 7-day refund on a first purchase.
Where it does not fit: it needs Apple Silicon, so it is no help on the Intel Macs that Aqua supports. It has no Windows or iPhone app, no free tier or trial, no live word-by-word display, and its source is not public. Superwhisper Free and FluidVoice give you local speech for $0, so try them first. "Local speech" also does not mean the app never uses the network: licence checks, updates and usage telemetry do. SuprFlow vs Aqua Voice
If you want a free cloud plan that does not run out
Wispr Flow
Wispr's pricing page lists a free plan with 2,000 words a week on desktop and 1,000 on mobile, renewing weekly, with the same cleanup as the paid plan. It has an Android app today. Pro is dearer than Aqua's, at $15 a month. Like Aqua, it needs an internet connection. Is Wispr Flow free? explains how the cap works.
Willow
Aqua lists Zero Data Retention under its Business plan. Willow's privacy policy says Private Mode is the default for everyone, with no retention of audio or dictated text and no training on them. Its free plan is described as unlimited use of a weaker model on the pricing page, and as 2,000 words a week in its help centre, so confirm in the app. Pro costs $15 a month. How do you test an alternative in 15 minutes?
- In Aqua, open the app you write in most and dictate this made-up note: "Hi Leandro, the server bill was 2,315 dollars, not 2,135. Renewal is on the 28th. Um, actually, the 29th. Loop in Dr. Haverford."
- Count fixes to the names, both amounts and the corrected date.
- Install one alternative from the table. If it uses local models, let the model download finish first.
- Dictate the same note in the same app and count again.
- Turn Wi-Fi off and repeat in both. Aqua's own page tells you what to expect from Aqua.
- Try two sentences of your own jargon in each, and add misses to the dictionary.
If offline use was your reason, step 5 decides it. If price was your reason, add up a year at each list price before switching.
