A good Typeless alternative for a Mac depends on which part of Typeless does not fit. If the $30 monthly price is the issue, Wispr Flow ($15) and Aqua Voice ($10) do a similar cloud job for less on month-to-month billing. If you do not want speech transcribed in the cloud, Superwhisper and VoiceInk recognise it on the Mac and can still tidy the text with AI. If you want to pay once and stay on the Mac, SuprFlow is an option. If you pay Typeless yearly and are happy with it, stay.
Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.
We have not run a controlled benchmark of Typeless or the alternatives. What follows is what each company documents.
Why do people look for an alternative to Typeless?
Typeless's own pages describe each of these.
- Monthly billing costs more than twice the yearly rate. The pricing page lists Pro at $30 per member a month, or $12 a month billed yearly. That is a fair deal for a committed user and an expensive way to try dictation for a month or two.
- The free allowance is not published. The pricing page says "Limited words" each week without giving the number.
- Transcription is cloud only. The Data Controls page says "Transcription is performed on the cloud". It also says Typeless processes "the application you're using and relevant text within it" in the cloud and then discards it. No offline mode is described.
- No one-time licence. Only monthly and yearly plans are listed.
What Typeless does well is worth stating plainly. The same Data Controls page says "Your voice audio is not stored" and "Dictation data is not used for model training by us or any third party". Its homepage lists apps for macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS and Android, translation as you speak, and "Ask anything" on selected text. Few alternatives match that platform list. If yearly billing and cloud processing are fine with you, there is little to gain by switching.

Wispr Flow: the same job at half the monthly price
Wispr Flow is the nearest equivalent: a cloud service that removes filler words and handles spoken self-corrections, on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. Paid monthly it is $15 against Typeless's $30; paid annually the two match at $12. It adds a meeting Notetaker on Mac and Windows.
Two differences run the other way. Wispr's system requirements say Linux is not supported. And Wispr's security overview says model improvement is on by default for Free and Pro, though you can turn it off, where Typeless states no training as standard. Wispr Flow vs Typeless has the full table.
Aqua Voice: the cheapest cloud month
Aqua's pricing page lists Pro at $10 a month with unlimited words, custom instructions and an expanded dictionary. Its Mac page states that audio is processed in the cloud and that there is no offline mode, so it answers the price question and not the cloud one. The free tier is 1,000 words, enough for a short trial. SuprFlow vs Aqua Voice
Superwhisper: keep the AI rewriting, choose where speech goes
Typeless's appeal is polished output. Superwhisper's Pro plan includes AI-formatted modes, and its sensitive-data guide explains that the voice stage and the language-model stage can each be local or cloud. That lets you keep audio on the Mac and still have text rewritten. The price is setup: you pick the models and write or choose the modes. The free plan gives unlimited local dictation without AI processing. Superwhisper vs Wispr Flow
VoiceInk: one small payment
VoiceInk's site says transcription runs locally and that its optional Cloud Enhancement sends "only transcribed text (not your voice)". It costs $25 once for one Mac, with a free trial and a 14-day money-back guarantee, and its source is public under GPL v3. It needs Apple Silicon and macOS 14.4 or later. SuprFlow vs VoiceInk
SuprFlow: local speech with little to configure
SuprFlow is a Mac menu-bar app. Hold Fn, speak, release, and the text is pasted at the cursor. Speech is recognised on the Mac after a one-time model download. Its default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers. An optional Cloud API setting sends the transcript text, not the audio, to a provider you configure, and that provider's terms then apply. It costs $125 once for up to five Macs you personally own.
SuprFlow is not a like-for-like swap. It has no Windows, Linux, iPhone or Android app, no translation, no voice editing of selected text, no free tier or trial, and its source is not public. Its default cleanup is lighter than the rewriting Typeless describes. Licence checks, updates and usage telemetry also use the network. Consider it only if you work on Macs and local speech plus a one-time price are the two things you want. SuprFlow vs Typeless
How do you test an alternative in 15 minutes?
Typeless's selling point is tidy prose, so test whether tidying changes your meaning. Use made-up text.
- In Typeless, dictate into a blank email: "Hey Wim, so, the supplier did not confirm the order, I repeat, did not. We need, um, 240 units, no wait, 260. The quote is 18,750 euros and it expires on the 3rd."
- Check that "did not confirm" survived, and that 260, 18,750 and the 3rd are right.
- Install one alternative and dictate the same passage in the same app.
- Compare. Count transcription errors separately from style changes you did not ask for.
- Turn Wi-Fi off and try each once.
- Dictate two sentences of your own jargon and add misses to each dictionary.
A rough sentence with the right figures beats a smooth one with the wrong ones.
