If you are choosing a Mac dictation app for client work, ask where your voice is processed, then ask what is retained or used to improve a model. Those are different questions. SuprFlow recognizes speech on the Mac with a downloaded model; its default cleanup is local, while optional Cloud API formatting sends transcript text to a selected provider. Willow says it uses cloud infrastructure for dictation, while its default Private Mode does not retain dictated audio or text on its servers and does not use that content for model training. Willow also documents optional context awareness and a text-improvement opt-in.
Neither design settles a firm's approval on its own. A local speech path still has device history, clipboard, account traffic, and telemetry to review. A cloud speech path may satisfy an organization that accepts transient processing under an agreement, especially if it needs cross-device use or enterprise controls.
| Buyer question | SuprFlow 1.0.0 | Willow in current official documents |
|---|---|---|
| Where is audio recognized? | On the Mac with a downloaded WhisperKit model. | Willow says cloud infrastructure processes voice audio transiently for dictation. |
| Can dictated words reach a hosted AI service? | Yes, if the user chooses Cloud API formatting; text and instructions go to the chosen endpoint. | Cloud processing is part of Willow's dictation service. Its own policy describes service-provider controls. |
| Is content used for training by default? | The local recognition and default cleanup path does not submit words to a remote training service. Optional hosted formatting follows the selected provider's terms; verify the signed release and contract. | Willow says Private Mode is default and its servers do not retain dictated audio/text for training. “Help Improve Willow” is an optional opt-in for eligible text. |
| What stays on the device? | Recent raw, cleaned, and formatted transcription history; optional clipboard history. | Willow says transcript history and recordings shown in the app are local, unless a separate sync feature is chosen. |
| What about context from another app? | The app reads the focused app/window, URL when available, field details, and up to 300 characters at recording start for mode suggestion. That context is not passed into the formatter request in SuprFlow 1.0.0. | Willow documents optional Context Awareness that can temporarily process relevant active-window text; it can be switched off. |
| Which devices? | Current requirements list Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 14 or later. | Willow currently advertises Mac, Windows, and iPhone. |
The privacy distinction that matters
Willow's August 2026 policy gives its Private Mode meaningful protection: it says audio may be processed transiently, but audio, dictated text, and screen content are not retained by Willow in that mode; service providers have zero-retention and no-training controls. This is a cloud processing with controls proposition, not device-only speech recognition. Its optional improvement setting changes text retention for eligible data. A buyer should inspect the installed setting and contract, not infer that cloud processing automatically means training.
SuprFlow's advantage for a Mac-only user who must keep speech recognition on the device is its local model path. That does not justify saying the entire app is offline or that nothing leaves the Mac. Optional hosted formatting, account/license traffic, release telemetry, and local copies need explicit review. Its current privacy policy describes these separate paths; a firm should also ask for release-specific documentation before approval.
A fair 15-minute trial
Use a fictional email and a fictional client note with one name, one amount, a negation, and a list. On each app, record the version, settings, destination, time until usable text, corrections, and where the content is stored. In Willow, note Private Mode, Help Improve, and Context Awareness. In SuprFlow, note the formatter, local histories, and selected speech model. Test in the actual Mac app used by staff, not only a plain text box. If a compliance decision depends on network behavior, verify the signed release with synthetic content and obtain the applicable vendor agreement.
Questions people ask
Does Willow use my dictation to train AI?
Willow's current policy says default Private Mode does not use dictated content for model training. Its optional Help Improve mode permits retention of eligible recognized text to improve text-correction models. Check the current policy and account setting; these are Willow's published claims, not our independent audit of its infrastructure.
Is SuprFlow automatically better for a bank because speech recognition is local?
No. A bank also needs to evaluate optional text formatting, local retention, telemetry, deployment controls, and the destination system. Willow's enterprise controls and cloud agreement may matter to some teams; a strict no-remote-audio policy points toward a verified local path.
Can I use Willow offline after installation?
As of 1 October 2026, Willow's plans overview lists offline dictation under Individual Pro, while its privacy policy still describes dictation as cloud-processed. Turn Wi-Fi off during a trial to see what your plan actually does. See Wispr Flow vs Willow Voice for the detail. SuprFlow's local recognition can operate after model download, subject to the installed build's license state and other network features.
