What is Superwhisper? Maker, models, price and platforms

Superwhisper is a dictation app with local and cloud speech models for Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. See who makes it, what it costs and who it suits.

Superwhisper is a voice-to-text app for Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android, made by SuperUltra, Inc. Its documentation says it "turns your voice into clean, formatted text in any app". Its main difference from many rivals is choice: each "mode" can use a speech model that runs on your device or one that runs in the cloud, with optional AI formatting on top. There is a free plan with local Whisper models and a paid Pro plan sold monthly, yearly or once.

Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 3 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.

This profile is built from Superwhisper's own pages. We have not tested Superwhisper, and nothing here is a judgement of its quality or accuracy.

What does Superwhisper do?

Superwhisper lets you speak instead of type in your Mac apps. You press a shortcut, talk, and the text is pasted where your cursor is. What happens in between depends on the mode you choose.

A mode is a saved recipe: which speech model turns audio into text, and whether an AI language model then reformats it, for example into a message, an email or a note. On the Free plan you get local Whisper models and up to two modes with no AI processing. Pro adds more local models (Nvidia Parakeet and Cohere Transcribe), cloud speech models (Superwhisper's S1-Voice, Deepgram Nova and ElevenLabs Scribe), AI-powered modes, and context awareness, which can use selected text and clipboard content to shape the result.

Beyond live dictation, Superwhisper documents a meeting recorder that captures system audio and produces summaries, file transcription for audio and video, and speaker labels. One Pro licence covers "unlimited Macs and Windows PCs, plus your iPhone and Android phone", according to its plans page.

Who is Superwhisper for?

Based on its own documentation, Superwhisper suits people who:

  • want to choose, mode by mode, between on-device speech for sensitive work and cloud models for other work;
  • want AI rewriting of dictation, such as turning a spoken outline into a finished email;
  • also need meeting recording or audio-file transcription in the same app;
  • use Windows or a phone as well as a Mac;
  • are happy to start free with local Whisper models and pay only if they need Pro;
  • need a vendor that offers a SOC 2 report through its Trust Center and a DPA or BAA, which its compliance page describes.

Who may want something else?

These reasons come from Superwhisper's own pages:

  • You want one fixed data path. Whether audio or text goes to the cloud depends on the model each mode uses. Superwhisper's sensitive data guide says only the Enterprise plan lets admins disable hosted cloud models; an individual relies on settings.
  • You want AI formatting with no connection. Its introduction says offline AI formatting needs the local S1-mini model in the Message or Mail mode; other AI processing needs the internet.
  • You want a privacy policy that describes the current cloud features. The policy is dated June 2024 and describes local transcription. Our Superwhisper safety guide explains the gap.
  • You want open-source code. Superwhisper does not publish it.

How does Superwhisper compare?

Where does SuprFlow fit?

SuprFlow, which publishes this page, is a different trade-off: local speech on the Mac with an on-device model, one payment ($125 lifetime access for up to 5 Macs you own, a 7-day refund on a first purchase, no subscription), and a short list of choices. Default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers. Optional cloud formatting sends transcript text, not audio, to the provider you pick.

SuprFlow is the wrong choice if you want a free plan or trial, Windows or phone apps, a meeting recorder, file transcription, many models to choose from, or a vendor with a SOC 2 report and BAA. Superwhisper documents all of these and SuprFlow offers none of them. If plain local dictation is all you need, Superwhisper's free plan costs nothing, so try it first.

Questions people ask

Is Superwhisper free?

Yes, there is a free plan. As of 3 October 2026, Superwhisper's plans page says Free includes unlimited dictation with local Whisper models, custom vocabulary, text replacements and up to two modes without AI processing. See Superwhisper pricing.

Is Superwhisper safe?

Superwhisper's sensitive data guide says transcription history is stored locally on your device, that cloud providers it uses work under zero-data-retention terms, and that your audio and text are not used to train AI models. It also offers a SOC 2 report under NDA. Cloud modes do send data off the Mac, so check each mode. Is Superwhisper safe and local? covers the details.

Does Superwhisper work offline?

Yes, with local voice models. Its introduction says "Local voice models transcribe without an internet connection", and that offline AI formatting needs the local S1-mini model in the Message or Mail mode.

How much is Superwhisper?

As of 3 October 2026, Pro costs $8.49 a month, $84.99 a year or $249.99 once, and Free costs nothing. Superwhisper says in-app purchases on iPhone and Android cost more. Superwhisper pricing has a three-year cost table.
