Superwhisper Pro is worth paying for if you want AI modes that rewrite your dictation, cloud or Parakeet models, file transcription or meeting recording, and the same licence on Mac, Windows and your phone. It is probably not worth paying for if plain dictation with a local Whisper model is all you need, because Superwhisper's free plan already gives you that without a word limit. The lifetime licence only pays off against the annual plan if you keep Pro into a third year.
Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.
This is not a review and there is no score. We make a competing Mac app, and we have not run a controlled test of Superwhisper's accuracy or speed. What follows is what Superwhisper documents, who that suits, and how to judge it yourself.
What do you get, according to Superwhisper?
As of 1 October 2026. Sources: Superwhisper's plans page, introduction, voice models and quickstart.
| Area | What Superwhisper documents |
|---|---|
| Price | Free: $0. Pro: $8.49 a month, $84.99 a year, or $249.99 once (Lifetime). Every paid plan has the same features. |
| Free plan | Unlimited dictation with local Whisper models, custom vocabulary, text replacements, up to two modes without AI processing. New users first get 3,000 words of Pro features. |
| What Pro adds | Cloud voice models, Cohere Transcribe and Parakeet local models, AI modes, context awareness, realtime transcription, file transcription, system audio recording, speaker separation, your own API keys, priority support. |
| Platforms | macOS 14 or later, Windows 10 or 11, iOS and Android. One Pro licence covers unlimited Macs and Windows PCs plus your phone. |
| How it works on a Mac | Press Option-Space to start, speak, press it again. Text is pasted at the cursor. |
| Privacy | Local models keep audio and text on the device; cloud models are used under zero-data-retention terms. Details in Is Superwhisper safe?. |
| Refund | "The no questions asked refund within 30 days of purchase will always be honored," says the Superwhisper site. |
The strengths are real: a free plan with no word cap, a choice between local and cloud on every mode, a one-time option, and apps on four platforms.
What limits does Superwhisper document?
- Free has no AI processing. After the 3,000 Pro words, the app falls back to Free, and Free modes give you what the voice model heard, without AI rewriting.
- Intel Macs. The site's FAQ says "Intel Macs work best with Cloud models. Offline models only run really well on Apple Silicon macs."
- Offline AI formatting is narrow. The introduction says offline formatting needs the local S1-mini model in the Message or Mail mode; other AI processing needs the internet.
- Model trade-offs. The voice model page says Parakeet models "can struggle with punctuation and occasionally hallucinate on single-word recordings".
- App store prices are higher. The plans page says buying in the iPhone or Android app costs more because of store fees, and discounts do not apply there.
- Modes take setup. Each mode pairs a voice model with an optional language model, so getting the behaviour you want can mean configuring several modes.
Who is Superwhisper worth it for, and who should choose something else?
| If this is you | A sensible choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You dictate plain text into apps and a local Whisper model suits your voice | Superwhisper Free | Unlimited and free. Pro adds nothing you need. |
| You want dictation rewritten as clean emails or messages | Superwhisper Pro, after testing the AI modes in your first 3,000 words | AI modes are the main thing Pro adds for writing. |
| You transcribe recordings, lectures or meetings | Superwhisper Pro, or compare MacWhisper | Both handle files. See Superwhisper vs MacWhisper. |
| You use Windows or an Android phone as well as a Mac | Superwhisper Pro | One licence across them. |
| You will use Pro for three years or more | Lifetime at $249.99 | Cheaper than annual from the third year. See Superwhisper pricing. |
| You are not sure you will keep using Pro | Annual or monthly | Less money to find out. |
| Your team needs SSO, model restrictions or a BAA | Superwhisper Enterprise | Documented controls. SuprFlow, for one, has no team admin console. |
| You have an Intel Mac and need offline dictation | Test carefully first | Superwhisper says local models run best on Apple Silicon. |
| You want a one-time price for a single Mac and minimal setup | VoiceInk or SuprFlow, compared on a trial | See Superwhisper alternatives. |
Where SuprFlow fits, honestly: it is a Mac-only app for Apple Silicon and macOS 14 or later that runs speech recognition on the Mac, with local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers. It costs $125 once for up to five Macs you own, with a 7-day refund on a first purchase. It has no free tier, no trial, no file transcription, no meeting recorder, no AI modes you write yourself and no phone or Windows app. Superwhisper Free costs nothing and already does local dictation, so try it first. SuprFlow is worth comparing only if you prefer a hold-to-talk app with fewer settings. SuprFlow vs Superwhisper sets them side by side.
How can you test Superwhisper in 15 minutes before paying?
Use the free download and the 3,000 Pro words. The script is fictional, so nothing private is sent anywhere.
- Install and set up (3 minutes). Download from superwhisper.com, drag it to Applications, and allow Microphone and Accessibility. Note the voice model the setup wizard picks.
- Dictate an email (2 minutes). In your mail app, press Option-Space and say: "Hi Tomasz, thanks for the notes. The deposit is 6,300 dollars, not 3,600. Can we move the call to Wednesday the 9th at 11:15? Um, actually make it 11:30. Best, Rhea." Press Option-Space again.
- Check four things. The name, both numbers, the time correction and the punctuation.
- Switch to an AI mode (3 minutes). Repeat in the Message or Mail mode while you still have Pro words. Did the rewrite keep your meaning?
- Try your vocabulary (3 minutes). Two sentences with a colleague's surname, a product name and an acronym. Add misses to the vocabulary and retry.
- Go offline (2 minutes). Turn off Wi-Fi and dictate once more in each mode you plan to use. Any mode that fails is using a cloud model.
- Count your fixes (2 minutes). The number of corrections decides whether it saves time.
Run the same script with Apple Dictation, which is already on your Mac, and one other app on your shortlist. How to run a fair Mac dictation comparison has a fuller method.
Pay for Pro if the AI modes clearly cut your corrections, or you need files, meetings or Windows. Otherwise stay on Free.
Questions people ask
Is Superwhisper good?
We have not benchmarked it, so we will not rate it. Superwhisper documents local and cloud models, AI modes and apps on four platforms. Superwhisper publishes its own benchmark method; run the test above with your own voice.
Is the Superwhisper lifetime licence worth it?
Only if you expect to use Pro for three years or more. At list prices, three annual payments total $254.97 against $249.99 for Lifetime. Superwhisper says lifetime keys never expire and every plan has the same features.
Is Superwhisper Pro worth it over the free plan?
Only if you want what Free leaves out: AI modes, cloud or Parakeet models, file transcription or meeting audio. Plain local dictation is unlimited on Free.
Can I get a refund if Superwhisper is not worth it for me?
Superwhisper's site promises a refund within 30 days of purchase for website purchases. App Store and Google Play purchases are handled by Apple or Google, according to its plans page.
