Voice typing for WhatsApp on a Mac: text, not voice notes

How to voice type a WhatsApp message on a Mac so it arrives as text, why the microphone button sends a voice note instead, and what to check before you send.

To voice type a WhatsApp message on a Mac, click in the message box in WhatsApp for Mac or WhatsApp Web, start Apple's built-in Dictation (press the Microphone key or your Dictation shortcut), speak, then read the text before you press Return. Do not use the microphone button inside WhatsApp for this: it records a voice message, and the other person receives audio, not text. WhatsApp's voice message transcripts turn messages you receive into text; they do not type the messages you send.

Does WhatsApp have built-in voice typing?

No, not for typing a message. WhatsApp's help pages do not describe a built-in dictation feature as of 1 October 2026. What WhatsApp does document are two voice features that are easy to mistake for dictation:

WhatsApp featureWhat it doesDoes the other person get text?
Voice message (microphone button in the chat)Records your voice and sends it as audioNo. They get a recording
Voice message transcriptsTurns voice messages you receive into text for you to readNot relevant. It works on received audio

WhatsApp's announcement says "transcripts are generated on your device so that no one else, not even WhatsApp, can hear or read your personal messages," and that you turn them on in Settings > Chats > Voice message transcripts, where you also pick the transcript language. The steps it gives (long press, then tap Transcribe) are phone gestures. WhatsApp's messaging page describes the same feature as a way to "read received voice notes."

So if someone asks you to "send it as text," a voice message is not the answer, even with transcripts. They still receive audio. Typing by voice is.

How do you dictate a WhatsApp message with Apple Dictation?

This is the free route. Apple's Dictation guide for macOS 27 says "you can speak to enter text anywhere you can type it," which includes the WhatsApp message box.

  1. Turn on Dictation once in System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation. On older macOS versions the wording may differ; look for Dictation under Keyboard.
  2. Open WhatsApp for Mac, or WhatsApp Web in your browser, and open the right chat.
  3. Click in the Type a message box so the insertion point is blinking there.
  4. Press the Microphone key if your keyboard has one, or your Dictation shortcut.
  5. Speak the message. Apple says that in supported languages Dictation adds commas, periods and question marks for you.
  6. Press Escape or the key again to stop. Read the text, then press Return to send.

Setup is in How to use voice to text on a Mac. See the Mac dictation shortcut guide to change the key, Mac dictation commands for spoken punctuation, and Mac Dictation not working if nothing happens.

WhatsApp says WhatsApp for Mac "is supported on macOS 11 or higher." If your Mac is older, WhatsApp Web in a browser is the alternative it suggests, and Dictation works in the browser's message box too.

When is a push-to-talk dictation app worth it?

WhatsApp is mostly short messages. Starting and stopping Dictation for each one adds up, which is why some people want push to talk: hold a key, speak, release, and the text appears.

SuprFlow is one example. It is a menu-bar app for Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 14 or later. Hold the Fn key, speak, release, and it pastes the text into whichever text field has focus. Speech recognition runs on the Mac after a one-time model download; see https://suprflow.app/requirements. Default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers. A personal dictionary helps with names that keep coming out wrong. It costs $125 once (as of 1 October 2026), with no free tier or trial.

Because it pastes at the cursor, it should work in an ordinary text field; test it in WhatsApp with a harmless sentence, ideally in a chat with yourself, before you rely on it. We have not run a controlled benchmark against Apple Dictation. If you send a few messages a day, Apple's free Dictation is enough.

What goes wrong when dictating into WhatsApp?

  • Return sends. Pressing Return in a chat box usually sends the message. Apple's guide says the spoken command "new line" is "equivalent to pressing the Return key once," so saying "new line" in the WhatsApp box may send a half-finished message. Keep dictated WhatsApp messages to one paragraph, or add line breaks by hand.
  • Voice message instead of text. Clicking the microphone icon in the chat starts a recording. Use your keyboard's Dictation key instead.
  • Wrong chat. Dictated text goes to whichever box has focus. Check the name at the top of the chat before you speak, especially in groups. See what to do after a wrong-window paste.
  • Emoji. Apple says you can say the name of an emoji, such as "heart emoji." If you meant the word, check what was inserted.
  • Silence. Apple says Dictation stops automatically after 30 seconds without speech.
  • Web vs app. WhatsApp Web runs in a browser tab. If you click into the browser's address bar or search field, the words go there.

What should you check before you press Return?

  • The chat or group name at the top of the window.
  • Names, places and anything spelled unusually.
  • Numbers, times, dates and amounts.
  • Every "not", "no" and "can't". One lost word reverses a message.
  • That nothing extra was captured after you finished, such as a cough or a word to someone in the room.

On privacy: WhatsApp says "messaging on any device is protected by end-to-end encryption" on its messaging page. The dictation step and the sent message are separate; once you send, the text is handled by WhatsApp like any typed message. See where dictated text goes after insertion.

Questions people ask

Why does WhatsApp send a voice note when I tap the microphone?

That button is WhatsApp's voice message recorder. It sends audio. To send text by voice, use Dictation in the message box.

Can WhatsApp convert voice to text on a Mac?

WhatsApp's transcripts convert voice messages you receive into text. For messages you send, use Apple Dictation or another dictation app to type them.

Does voice typing work in WhatsApp Web?

Yes. Apple Dictation types into the WhatsApp Web message box in any browser, the same as any other text field.

Is there a WhatsApp voice typing setting I need to turn on?

No. The only setting involved is Dictation in your Mac's Keyboard settings. WhatsApp's own transcript setting is for received voice messages.
