Dictate in Slack and Teams on a Mac: voice typing that works

Slack and Teams have no dictation button for ordinary messages. Here is how to dictate chat messages on a Mac, what each vendor documents, and what to check.

Neither Slack nor Microsoft Teams documents a dictation button for ordinary channel and chat messages. To dictate in Teams or use voice typing in Slack on a Mac, click in the message box and use Apple's built-in Dictation (press the Microphone key and speak), or use a system-wide dictation app with a push-to-talk key. Both vendors do have voice features, but they do different jobs, and one of them looks like dictation when it is not.

Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.

Does Slack have built-in dictation?

Only for Slackbot, Slack's AI assistant. Slack's How to work with Slackbot page says, for desktop: click Slackbot, then "type your message or question, or click the microphone icon to dictate your prompt." Slack adds that "Slackbot voice dictation works with all Slack supported languages and many others, though it's currently optimised for English. Dictated messages are transcribed, but audio data is not stored." Whether you have Slackbot depends on your subscription and your admin.

That is dictation of a prompt to Slackbot. Slack's help pages do not describe a built-in dictation feature for messages you post to a channel or direct message as of 1 October 2026; the closest page is Record audio and video clips in Slack.

The microphone icon in a channel is not dictation. Slack's clips page says: "From a channel or DM, click on the microphone icon in the message field to start recording." That records an audio clip of up to five minutes, which is posted as audio. You can click Generate transcript to attach a transcript, but your colleagues still receive a recording, not a typed message.

Does Microsoft Teams have built-in dictation?

Microsoft's support pages do not describe a Dictate button in the Teams message box as of 1 October 2026. Microsoft's Dictate in Microsoft 365 page links to dictation articles for Word, Outlook, OneNote and PowerPoint; Teams is not on the list. The Send and read messages in Microsoft Teams section covers features such as recording a video clip and text predictions, not dictation.

Microsoft does document dictation for Copilot Chat. Its Dictate messages to Microsoft Copilot Chat page says to sign in with a work or school account and select Start dictation in the chat prompt box. That is a prompt to Copilot, not a message to a colleague.

How do you dictate a Slack or Teams message with Apple Dictation?

This is the free route and the one to try first. Apple's Dictation guide for macOS 27 says "you can speak to enter text anywhere you can type it."

  1. Turn on Dictation once in System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation.
  2. In Slack or Teams, click in the message box of the right channel or chat.
  3. Press the Microphone key if your keyboard has one, or your Dictation shortcut.
  4. Speak the message. Apple says commas, periods and question marks are added automatically in supported languages.
  5. Press Escape or the key again to stop. Read the message, then press Return to send.

Setup is in How to use voice to text on a Mac. See the Mac dictation shortcut guide to change the key, Mac dictation commands for spoken punctuation and Mac Dictation not working for fixes.

When is a system-wide dictation app worth it for chat?

Chat is many short messages. Starting and stopping Dictation for each one adds up, which is why people look for push to talk: hold a key, speak, release, done.

SuprFlow is one example. It is a menu-bar app for Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 14 or later. Hold the Fn key, speak, release, and it pastes the text into whichever text field has focus. Speech recognition runs on the Mac after a one-time model download; see https://suprflow.app/requirements. Default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers. A personal dictionary helps with colleagues' names, project names and acronyms. It costs $125 once (as of 1 October 2026), with no free tier or trial.

Because it pastes at the cursor, it should work in an ordinary text field; test it in Slack or Teams with a harmless sentence, ideally in a message to yourself. We have not run a controlled benchmark against Apple Dictation. If you send a handful of chat messages a day, Apple's free Dictation is enough.

What goes wrong when dictating into chat apps?

  • Return sends. If Return is set to send in your chat app, a stray key press posts a half-finished message. Stop dictating and read before you touch the keyboard.
  • Wrong channel. Dictated text goes to whichever message box has focus. Check the channel or person's name above the box before you speak. See what to do after a wrong-window paste.
  • Audio clip instead of text. In Slack, clicking the microphone in a channel starts a recording. Use the keyboard key for dictation instead.
  • The microphone is busy. A call or huddle uses the same microphone. Dictating while you are unmuted means the meeting hears you.
  • Mentions and formatting. Speech recognition may type "at Priya" as plain words. Add @mentions, channel links and code formatting by hand.
  • Silence. Apple says Dictation stops automatically after 30 seconds without speech.

What should you check before you press Return?

  • The channel or recipient shown above the message box.
  • Names of people, customers and projects.
  • Numbers, dates, times and time zones.
  • Words like "not" and "can't".
  • Anything confidential that belongs in a private message rather than a channel.
  • That nothing extra was captured after you finished your sentence.

Questions people ask

Why does the Slack microphone button send a voice message instead of text?

Slack documents that icon as audio clip recording. It posts audio, with an optional transcript.

Can I dictate in Teams on a Mac without extra software?

Yes. Click in the message box and use Apple's Dictation, which is built into macOS.

Is there push to talk dictation for Slack?

Not from Slack for ordinary messages. A system-wide dictation app with a hold-to-talk key provides it in any app.

Does dictating into Slack or Teams keep the message private?

The dictation step and the message are separate. What happens to a posted message is governed by Slack or Teams and your workspace's settings. See where dictated text goes.
