To use voice to text in Discord or Telegram on a Mac, click in the message box, start Apple's built-in Dictation with the Microphone key or your Dictation shortcut, speak, then read the text before you press Return. Neither app documents its own dictation feature. Both have voice features that look similar but do a different job: voice messages send audio, Telegram Premium can turn received voice messages into text, and Discord's /tts reads typed text aloud.

Does Discord have speech to text?
Not for typing messages. Discord's help pages do not describe a built-in dictation feature as of 1 October 2026; see the Discord Help Center. Two documented features are often mistaken for it:
- Voice messages. Discord's Voice Messages article says they "give you the ability to send an audio recording." They can be up to 20 minutes long, and to the question "Can I send voice messages on Discord Web or the Discord Desktop app?" Discord answers: "No, you can only send voice messages from the mobile app."
- Text-to-speech. Discord's Text-to-Speech 101 article explains that typing /tts before a sentence has it read aloud to the channel. That turns text into speech, the opposite direction.
So on a Mac, the way to "talk" a Discord message into text is system dictation in the message box.
Does Telegram have voice to text on a Mac?
Telegram has transcription for voice messages, not dictation for typing. Its Premium FAQ lists "Voice-to-Text Conversion" among the features "all Premium users receive," and notes that "some clients may not immediately support one or several of these features." That converts voice messages into text for reading. Sending a voice message still sends audio.
Telegram's help pages do not describe a dictation feature for typing a message as of 1 October 2026; see the Telegram FAQ. The FAQ lists a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux, a separate native macOS app, and Telegram Web. Dictation works the same way in all of them, because it types into whichever text box is active.
How do you dictate a message with Apple Dictation?
Apple's Dictation guide for macOS 27 says "you can speak to enter text anywhere you can type it."
- Turn on Dictation once in System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation. On older macOS versions the wording may differ.
- Open the Discord channel or DM, or the Telegram chat.
- Click in the message box so the insertion point is blinking there.
- Press the Microphone key if your keyboard has one, or your Dictation shortcut.
- Speak the message. Apple says that in supported languages Dictation adds commas, periods and question marks.
- Press Escape or the key again to stop. Read the text, then press Return to send.
Setup is in How to use voice to text on a Mac. See the Mac dictation shortcut guide, Mac dictation commands and Mac Dictation not working.
When is a push-to-talk dictation app worth it?
Discord and Telegram are fast, short-message apps. If you chat a lot, starting and stopping Dictation each time gets tiresome, and a hold-to-talk key is closer to how voice chat already feels.
SuprFlow is one example. It is a menu-bar app for Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 14 or later. Hold the Fn key, speak, release, and it pastes the text into whichever text field has focus. Speech recognition runs on the Mac after a one-time model download; see https://suprflow.app/requirements. Default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers. A personal dictionary helps with usernames, game terms and server names. It costs $125 once (as of 1 October 2026), with no free tier or trial.
Because it pastes at the cursor, it should work in an ordinary text field; test it in Discord or Telegram with a harmless sentence, ideally in a chat with yourself. If you use push-to-talk in Discord voice channels, choose keys that do not clash. We have not run a controlled benchmark against Apple Dictation. For the odd message, Apple's free Dictation is enough.
Which route should you use?
| The app's own voice features | Apple Dictation | System-wide app (SuprFlow as the example) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Types your message as text | No. Voice messages send audio | Yes | Should work; test first |
| Turns voice messages into text | Telegram Premium, for voice messages | No | No |
| Sends audio from a Mac | Discord: no, its voice messages are mobile only | No | No |
| Cost | Free, or Telegram Premium | Free with macOS | $125 once |
| Start | Microphone in the chat | Microphone key or shortcut | Hold Fn, release to insert |
| Best for | Audio notes | Occasional typed messages | Many typed messages a day |
What goes wrong when dictating into Discord or Telegram?
- Return sends. Pressing Return in a chat box usually sends. Apple's guide says the spoken command "new line" is "equivalent to pressing the Return key once," so saying it may post half a message. Keep dictated messages to one paragraph.
- Wrong channel or chat. Text goes wherever the cursor is. In Discord, check the channel name and the server; in Telegram, the chat name at the top. See what to do after a wrong-window paste.
- Your microphone is shared. If you are in a Discord voice channel or a Telegram call with an open microphone, the people there hear you dictate. Mute first.
- Slash commands and mentions. Dictation may type "slash" or "at" as words. Type /commands, @mentions and #channel links by hand.
- Usernames and slang. Gamer tags, emoji names and in-jokes are hard for any speech recognition. Apple says you can say an emoji name, such as "heart emoji", to insert one.
- Silence. Apple says Dictation stops after 30 seconds without speech.
What should you check before you press Return?
- The server, channel or chat name.
- Whether the channel is public or a large server, where many people will read it.
- Names, handles and links.
- Numbers, times and dates, especially across time zones.
- Every "not" and "no".
- That nothing extra was captured from people talking nearby.
On privacy: Discord's Privacy Policy says "we similarly collect and store the messages you send," including drafts. Telegram's FAQ says cloud chats are stored in Telegram's cloud so they sync across devices, while secret chats are device-specific. How you dictated does not change that. See where dictated text goes after insertion.
