Both can dictate into another Mac app and run speech recognition locally. MacWhisper is also a substantial workspace for transcribing recordings, meetings, and files. SuprFlow is centered on a quick menu-bar loop: press a hotkey, speak, review the result, and insert it where you are writing. If you are comparing them for confidential work, the deciding question is the selected processing path, followed by where the resulting text is stored.
There is a version trap in this comparison. MacWhisper's direct-download version supports system-wide dictation. Its Mac App Store product is named Whisper Transcription and does not include that dictation feature. Compare SuprFlow against the direct-download edition if your task is typing by voice into Mail, a document, or a practice-management app.
| Decision | SuprFlow | MacWhisper direct download |
|---|---|---|
| Main task | Quick system-wide dictation from a menu-bar app. | Dictation plus file transcription, meeting recording, and broader transcript workflows. |
| Default speech path | Uses an on-device WhisperKit model. | Its privacy guide says transcription is local by default after a model download. |
| Optional cloud speech | No hosted speech-recognition path found in SuprFlow 1.0.0. | Cloud transcription providers send audio to the selected provider. |
| Optional text processing | Local cleanup by default; Cloud API formatting sends transcript text and instructions to the selected provider. Ollama may be local if its configured endpoint is local. | AI Prompts send transcript text to an AI provider, while Ollama or LM Studio can keep that prompt local. DeepL translation also sends text to DeepL. |
| Mac deployment | Current SuprFlow requirements say macOS 14+ and Apple Silicon. | MacWhisper documents direct-download volume licenses, MDM support, and CLI access; verify the exact current deployment terms. |
| Licensing | One-time $125 personal purchase; confirm the price and terms at purchase. | MacWhisper documents a one-time lifetime personal license for direct download and volume packs. Compare actual quotes and update rights. |
Choose by the job you need done
If you mostly dictate short emails, notes, and prompts into the app already open, try SuprFlow's hotkey and insertion behavior. Test its personal vocabulary and snippets with names, acronyms, numbers, and addresses you actually use. The local cleanup path is the sensible first setting for a confidentiality evaluation. A successful test is a useful paragraph in the right field with fewer corrections, not a large count of AI models.
If you work from recorded interviews, calls, lectures, or meeting files, test MacWhisper's broader transcription workflow. Its direct-download edition also has live dictation and app-specific prompts, so it is inaccurate to dismiss it as only a file transcription tool. If IT needs MDM or bulk licensing, ask both vendors for current evidence instead of assuming a solo-user setup transfers to a firm.
For either app, a local speech model does not settle the whole privacy question. Record whether you enabled a cloud speech model, an AI rewrite prompt, translation, local history, clipboard history, backups, and a managed destination app. SuprFlow release builds also initialize telemetry and make account/license requests.
Run one fair 15-minute test
- Use the same Mac, microphone, destination app, and synthetic paragraph. Include a person's fictional surname, an acronym, a monetary amount, a date, and a correction such as “make that Thursday.”
- Record the app version, exact speech model, formatter or prompt setting, whether it uses a local or hosted endpoint, and network status.
- Dictate once into a short email and once into a longer document. Count material corrections, missed words, and wrong-field insertions. Note how easy it was to fix each result.
- Check each app's retained history and the destination app's own retention. If using MacWhisper's cloud transcription or either app's hosted rewrite path, test that separately and record where audio or text was sent.
- Compare the actual price and license terms for your number of users. A direct-download MacWhisper license and its App Store subscription are different offers.
Questions people ask
Is MacWhisper offline?
Its default transcription runs locally after the model download, according to MacWhisper's privacy documentation. Optional cloud transcription, translation, and AI prompts send audio or text to the relevant provider. A local Ollama or LM Studio prompt can remain local when configured that way.
Can MacWhisper type into any Mac text field?
The direct-download MacWhisper edition documents system-wide dictation into text fields. The Mac App Store edition does not include that feature. Verify the edition before buying for live dictation.
Which is safer for a law firm or financial team?
Neither brand name is an approval. Test a configured build with synthetic content, identify every processing and storage path, confirm license/deployment controls, and follow the firm's confidentiality and records policy. Have staff review the final text before filing or sending it.
