MacWhisper vs Wispr Flow: file transcription or live dictation?

MacWhisper transcribes recordings and meetings on your Mac for a one-time price. Wispr Flow is cloud dictation by subscription. See which job each one fits.

These two apps overlap less than the search suggests. MacWhisper is mainly a transcription workspace: you drop in audio or video files, record meetings, and export transcripts or subtitles, with speech recognised on your Mac by default. Wispr Flow is mainly live dictation: you hold a key, talk, and cleaned-up text lands in whatever app you are typing in, with recognition done in Wispr's cloud. Pick MacWhisper for recordings, Wispr Flow for writing by voice all day across devices, and both if you do both jobs.

Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.

We have not run a controlled benchmark of either product. This page reports what each company documents and gives you a short test to run yourself.

Who should pick which?

  • Journalists, researchers, podcasters and students with recordings to transcribe: MacWhisper. This is what it is built for.
  • People who want subtitles (.srt or .vtt) from video: MacWhisper.
  • People who write emails, messages and prompts by voice, on a Mac and a phone: Wispr Flow.
  • People who need transcription with no internet, or with files that must stay on the Mac: MacWhisper with a local model.
  • People who want live dictation on the Mac only, without a subscription: MacWhisper's direct-download edition has dictation too. Test whether it is enough before paying for anything else.
  • Teams that want shared vocabulary and admin controls for dictation: Wispr Flow.

What is the MacWhisper version trap?

There are two editions, and they are not the same product. MacWhisper's edition comparison says:

  • MacWhisper, the direct download sold through Gumroad, "allows dictation into any text field on your Mac", can detect meetings, supports all AI providers, and is sold as a one-time lifetime licence.
  • Whisper Transcription, from the Mac App Store, has fewer AI provider options and uses weekly, monthly or yearly subscriptions. The dictation article says dictation is not available in the App Store edition because of Mac App Store restrictions.

If you are comparing MacWhisper with Wispr Flow for dictation, you need the direct download. MacWhisper's site also warns that scam sites imitate it, and that purchases go only through its Gumroad page or the App Store.

macwhisper.com listed Pro at €64 on 1 October 2026. Your checkout may show another currency, and MacWhisper offers a discount for students, journalists and nonprofits on request. Check the System Requirements entry in the FAQ on macwhisper.com for the macOS version your Mac needs before buying.

Is MacWhisper's dictation a replacement for Wispr Flow?

It can be, with trade-offs that MacWhisper's own pages make clear. Dictation is one feature of a larger app. Automatic grammar clean-up and AI prompts are listed under Pro, and the dictation article says AI features need your own API key with a provider such as OpenAI, which is billed separately by that provider, unless you run a local model. Wispr Flow includes cleanup in the service with no keys to manage, and adds phone and Windows apps.

On the other side, MacWhisper recognises speech on the Mac, so it has no weekly word limit to run into and works offline. Wispr Flow's free plan stops at 2,000 words a week on desktop, and every plan needs a connection.

Choose MacWhisper if…

  • Most of your work starts as a recording: interviews, lectures, voice memos, podcasts or meetings.
  • You need subtitles or exports such as .docx, .pdf or .srt.
  • Files must stay on your Mac, or you work without internet.
  • You want to pay once.
  • You are comfortable choosing models and, for AI features, adding your own provider key.

Choose Wispr Flow if…

  • Most of your work is typing that you would like to speak instead.
  • You want the same dictation on a Mac, a Windows PC and a phone.
  • You want cleanup with nothing to configure.
  • You need team features for dictation.
  • A cloud service is acceptable for what you dictate. Is Wispr Flow safe? covers its data controls.

How do you test both in 15 minutes?

Use made-up content only.

  1. Record a file (2 minutes). With your Mac's voice recorder, record yourself reading: "Meeting notes for the Harlow project. Present: Ines Okoro and Tom Vance. The budget is 64,000 dollars, not 46,000. The next review is on Friday the 23rd."
  2. Transcribe it in MacWhisper (3 minutes). Drag the file in. Check the two names, both numbers and the date. Try an export.
  3. Dictate the same text live in Wispr Flow (3 minutes). In a blank email, hold Fn, read the passage, and release. Check the same items.
  4. Dictate it live in MacWhisper (3 minutes). Turn on Dictation from the home screen of the direct-download edition, set a shortcut, and repeat in the same email.
  5. Go offline (2 minutes). Turn Wi-Fi off and try both again.
  6. Decide by the job (2 minutes). Which step looked most like your real week: step 2, or steps 3 and 4?

A third option

If your answer was "live dictation, on a Mac only, with speech kept on the device", SuprFlow is a narrower app built for that one job: hold Fn, speak, release, and text is pasted at the cursor. It costs $125 once for up to five Macs you own, with no free tier or trial. It cannot transcribe files or record meetings, so it does not replace MacWhisper, and it has no phone or Windows app, so it does not replace Wispr Flow for people who need those. SuprFlow vs MacWhisper compares the two directly.

Questions people ask

Can Wispr Flow transcribe an audio file?

Wispr's pricing page does not list file upload or file transcription. It lists live dictation and a Notetaker for meetings and voice memos. For existing recordings, MacWhisper is the tool designed for it.

Does MacWhisper have dictation like Wispr Flow?

Yes, in the direct-download edition. MacWhisper's docs say it lets you dictate into any text field with a keyboard shortcut. The App Store edition does not include dictation.

Is MacWhisper a one-time purchase?

The direct-download Pro licence is listed as "Pay Once" with lifetime updates. The App Store edition is sold by subscription. Wispr Flow is subscription only. More options are in Mac dictation apps you can buy once.

Which is more private, MacWhisper or Wispr Flow?

MacWhisper's docs say transcription is local by default and data leaves the Mac only for optional cloud features. Wispr says transcription always runs in its cloud, with settings for storage and model training. Whether cloud processing is acceptable is your decision or your employer's.
