Most reasons to look for a VoiceInk alternative are about hardware and platforms, because at $25 once it has the lowest price of the paid apps on this page. If your Mac has an Intel chip, try Wispr Flow or FluidVoice. If you also need Windows or Linux, try Handy or Superwhisper. If you want to transcribe recordings and meetings as well as dictate, look at MacWhisper. SuprFlow is another pay-once Mac app with local speech, but it costs more than VoiceInk and is worth it only in narrow cases. If VoiceInk runs on your Mac and you like it, keep it.
Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.
We have not benchmarked VoiceInk or any alternative for accuracy or speed.
Why do people look for an alternative to VoiceInk?
These limits are stated by VoiceInk itself.
- Apple Silicon and a recent macOS are required. VoiceInk's site says it "Works only on Apple Silicon Macs" and requires macOS 14.4 or later. The GitHub README lists macOS 15.0 or later, so check the current download against your system.
- No Windows or Linux version. The site lists macOS licences and links an iOS app. It mentions no Windows version.
- The licence is priced per Mac. $25 covers one macOS device, $39 two and $49 three.
- Free means building it yourself. The source is public under GPL v3 and the README says you can build it. The same README says the paid build is the one with automatic updates and priority support, so the free route leaves updating to you.
What VoiceInk does well: the site says "VoiceInk processes all voice transcription locally on your device", that its optional Cloud Enhancement sends "only transcribed text (not your voice)", and that a licence gives "lifetime access to all current features and future updates". It has a free trial and a 14-day money-back guarantee. Among paid Mac dictation apps with public source, nothing here undercuts it. If your Mac qualifies, staying is usually the sensible choice.
Which VoiceInk alternatives are worth trying?
Prices as of 1 October 2026, from each project's or vendor's own page.
| Alternative | Where speech is processed | Price model | Platforms | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Handy | On your computer | Free, MIT licence (repository) | macOS, Windows, Linux | Free and open source beyond the Mac |
| FluidVoice | On the Mac | Free, GPLv3 (download) | macOS 15 or newer, including Intel | Open source on an Intel Mac |
| Superwhisper | On the device or in the cloud, chosen per mode | Free plan; Pro $8.49 a month, $84.99 a year, or $249.99 once (plans) | macOS 14 or later, Windows, iOS, Android | One licence across computers and phones |
| Wispr Flow | In Wispr's cloud | Free with 2,000 words a week on desktop; Pro $15 a month, or $12 billed annually (pricing) | macOS 12 or later (Apple Silicon or Intel), Windows, iPhone, Android | Older and Intel Macs |
| MacWhisper | On the Mac by default; optional cloud providers | Free version; Pro €64 once (site) | Mac | Recordings and meetings plus dictation |
| SuprFlow | On the Mac, with a downloaded model | $125 once for up to five Macs you own (terms) | Apple Silicon Mac, macOS 14 or later | Four or five personal Macs on one licence |
Handy: free, open source, and not only for Macs
Handy is MIT licensed and describes itself as "a free, open source, and extensible speech-to-text application that works completely offline". It runs on macOS, Windows and Linux, which answers the most common platform gap. It is deliberately simple: press a shortcut, speak, get text. If you rely on VoiceInk's AI enhancement, Handy will feel bare. SuprFlow vs Handy
FluidVoice: open source for an Intel Mac
FluidVoice is free under GPLv3, and its download page says no account is needed. It offers several local speech models and uses Whisper on Intel Macs. It requires macOS 15 or newer, so it helps with an Intel chip but not with an old operating system. SuprFlow vs FluidVoice
Superwhisper: one licence for every device
Superwhisper's plans page says a Pro licence "works on all your devices: unlimited Macs and Windows PCs, plus your iPhone and Android phone", where VoiceInk charges by the Mac. The free plan includes unlimited dictation with local Whisper models. Pro costs far more than VoiceInk, at $84.99 a year or $249.99 once, and the source is not public. Superwhisper alternatives for Mac
Wispr Flow: for the Mac that VoiceInk will not run on
Wispr's system requirements list macOS 12 or later on Apple Silicon or Intel. Its transcription runs in Wispr's cloud, not on your Mac, and that is also the catch. Wispr's docs say an internet connection is required, and it is a subscription after the free weekly allowance. If local speech was your reason for choosing VoiceInk, this gives it up. Is Wispr Flow safe?
MacWhisper: if you also work with recordings
MacWhisper is a transcription workspace for audio files, video and meetings, with system-wide dictation in its direct-download edition. Pro is a one-time €64. Choose it when dictation is the smaller part of your work. MacWhisper alternatives
SuprFlow: when would it make sense instead?
SuprFlow is a Mac menu-bar app: hold Fn, speak, release, and text is pasted at your cursor. Speech is recognised on the Mac after a one-time model download. Default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers, and there is a personal dictionary, voice snippets and a local history.
It does not solve the usual reasons for leaving VoiceInk. It also requires Apple Silicon, it is Mac only with no iPhone app, and it has no Windows app. It costs $125 once against $25, has no free tier or trial where VoiceInk has a trial, and its source is not public where VoiceInk's is. One arithmetic point goes its way: the licence covers up to five Macs you personally own, and VoiceInk's largest listed licence covers three for $49. For one to three Macs, VoiceInk is cheaper. SuprFlow lists macOS 14 or later. SuprFlow vs VoiceInk compares the two in detail.
How do you test an alternative in 15 minutes?
- Check your Mac's chip and macOS version first. That alone may rule apps in or out.
- In VoiceInk, if it runs, dictate this made-up passage into the app you write in most: "Hi Greta, the repair came to 715 dollars, not 751. Collection is on the 11th. Um, no, the 12th. Please tell Mr. Okonkwo."
- Count fixes to the names, both amounts and the corrected date.
- Install one alternative and dictate the same passage in the same app.
- Turn Wi-Fi off and repeat, if working offline matters to you.
- Add two of your own terms to each app's dictionary and try them.
Switch only if the alternative runs where VoiceInk cannot, or needed fewer fixes.
Questions people ask
Does VoiceInk work on an Intel Mac?
No. VoiceInk's site says it works only on Apple Silicon Macs. Wispr Flow and FluidVoice list Intel support.
Is there a VoiceInk alternative for Windows?
Handy runs on Windows and Linux, and Superwhisper and Wispr Flow have Windows apps. SuprFlow and MacWhisper's direct download are Mac only.
Is there a free alternative to VoiceInk?
Yes. Handy and FluidVoice are free and open source, Superwhisper has a free plan, and Apple Dictation is built into macOS. You can also build VoiceInk from its source.
