Yes. Wispr Flow has a free plan called Flow Free that you can use without a credit card, and Wispr's plan pages put no end date on it. The catch is a weekly word limit: 2,000 words a week on desktop and 1,000 words a week on mobile, as of 1 October 2026. Unlimited dictation needs Flow Pro, which is $15 a month or $144 a year.
Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.

In Wispr's own words on that page: "Flow is free and includes dictation and the Notetaker, with generous weekly usage. You never need a credit card to start."
What happens when you reach the weekly limit?
Wispr's help centre describes the cap in stages rather than as a single wall. According to its weekly word cap article and its trial and limit article:
- A warning appears as you get close. On Android a heads-up card shows at about 800 words. On desktop a "Weekly words" card appears on the Home screen near the limit and shows how many words are left.
- On mobile, dictation slows at 1,000 words. The iPhone message reads "Weekly dictation limit reached. Flow will slow down until next week."
- On mobile, dictation is blocked at 1,500 words until the reset.
- On desktop, the Flow bar shows "Weekly dictation limit reached" with the reset time and an upgrade prompt once you reach the cap.
- Everything resets on Sunday at 12 a.m. Pacific Time. Restarting the app does not give you extra dictations before then.
Three more rules from the same articles: mobile words are counted separately from desktop words, unused words do not carry over to the next week, and the limit applies to dictation only, not to the Notetaker. Wispr sometimes grants bonus words in a week; the app tells you when it does.
The pricing page and the help articles do not present the numbers in exactly the same way, so trust the counter in your own app over any figure you read elsewhere, including here.
How far do 2,000 words a week go?
2,000 words is about 285 words a day across seven days, or 400 a day across a five-day working week. That is a few short emails and some chat messages each day. It is not enough for someone who drafts documents or long prompts by voice every day. A quick way to find out which group you are in: use the free plan normally for one full week and see whether the warning card ever appears.
Does Wispr Flow have a free trial of Pro?
Sometimes, and it depends on the account. Wispr's help articles describe a Pro trial with a standard length of 14 days, and say that trial eligibility is set at your first desktop login. They also say that "without a trial, you're on Flow Free from the start", and that referral, promo-code, student, team and enterprise sign-ups may receive a different trial or plan.
When a trial ends, the app asks you to choose between "Get unlimited access" and "Continue with limited access". Choosing the second puts you on Flow Free and the weekly cap applies. Wispr's plan article mentions a 3-day grace period before access reverts.
Teams are handled separately: eligible first-time team creators get a 14-day team trial.
Can you get more than the free limit without paying?
Wispr's pages describe three routes, each with conditions:
- Student plan. The plan article lists a Student plan at $0 a year for eligible students, claimed on Mac or Windows under Settings → Plans and Billing. The discount article says only selected student accounts get the free plan and others get reduced student pricing.
- Referrals. The students page says you and a friend each get a free month of Pro when the friend reaches 2,000 words or upgrades.
- Promo codes. These are entered under Settings → Plans and Billing on desktop.
If none of those apply and you need more words, the paid options and a multi-year cost table are in Wispr Flow pricing.
What does not change on the free plan?
Free and paid accounts use the same service. Wispr's known-limitations article says an internet connection is required because dictation is transcribed in the cloud, and that applies to every plan. See Does Wispr Flow work offline?.
Wispr's security overview says the "Improve the model for everyone" setting is on by default for Free and Pro, with the choice shown during onboarding, and that you can turn it off in Settings → Data and Privacy.
Which free Mac dictation apps have no weekly word limit?
If the weekly cap is the only thing in your way, these are free without a word allowance. Each is a different kind of product from Wispr Flow, mainly because speech recognition runs on your Mac instead of in a cloud service.
| App | Price as of 1 October 2026 | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Dictation | Included with macOS | Already on your Mac under System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation (path from Apple's macOS 27 guide; on older versions look for Dictation in Keyboard settings). Apple's guide says you can dictate text of any length without a timeout. |
| Handy | Free, open source (MIT) | Runs Whisper or Parakeet models on your computer. Mac, Windows and Linux. |
| Spokenly | Local models "$0 forever", no account | Proprietary app. Its paid Pro tier adds cloud models. |
| FluidVoice | Free, open source (GPLv3) | macOS 15 or newer. |
The full list, with licences and trade-offs, is in Free Wispr Flow alternatives for Mac.
SuprFlow, which publishes this page, is not free. It is a $125 one-time purchase with no free tier and no free trial, so it does not belong in the table above.
Questions people ask

No. The pricing page says "You never need a credit card to start."
Is the Wispr Flow free version limited in features or only in words?

Is Wispr Flow free for students?
For some. Wispr lists a $0-a-year Student plan for selected eligible student accounts and discounted pricing for other recognised students. Check the offer shown in your account under Plans and Billing.
Does the Wispr Flow free plan work offline?
