ClickUp is the only one of the three with its own voice to text on a Mac: Talk to Text works in comments, chat, Docs and other places in the ClickUp browser and desktop apps, and its Brain MAX desktop app can type into any text box. Asana documents voice task creation only in its iPhone app. Trello documents no voice feature. In Trello and Asana on a Mac, click into the card or task description and use Apple's built-in Dictation (press the Microphone key and speak) or a system-wide dictation app.
Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 3 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.
What does each tool document for voice?
| Tool | Voice feature | On a Mac? |
|---|---|---|
| ClickUp | Talk to Text in comments, chat messages, the Super Agent builder, Brain, Docs, Forms, Whiteboards and more (What is Talk to Text?) | Yes, browser and desktop app. ClickUp says "AI feature availability and limits vary by plan and user role" and Talk to Text "is also available for purchase on all plans" |
| ClickUp | Voice Clips: click the microphone in a task comment to record audio. With the AI ClickApp on, clips are transcribed automatically (Voice Clips) | Yes, but it sends a recording, not typed text |
| Asana | Voice recognition: hold New task or tap the microphone; up to 1:30 of audio becomes a task, first line as title, original audio attached (Create tasks on iOS) | No. Asana documents it for iOS |
| Trello | None. Atlassian's Trello help pages do not describe a built-in dictation feature as of 3 October 2026 (Trello support) | Not applicable |
ClickUp's Brain MAX desktop app goes further. Its Talk to Text guide says you "Press and hold fn or your custom shortcut key to start recording" and release to stop, and the text is "improved using AI, then pasted into the Brain MAX desktop app search bar or wherever else on your computer." It has a dictionary for names and terms. ClickUp says Talk to Text there "is available on all plans for a limited-time trial." If your team already pays for ClickUp's AI, try this first; it may be all you need, inside and outside ClickUp.
How do you dictate a task with Apple Dictation?
Apple's Dictation guide for macOS 27 says "you can speak to enter text anywhere you can type it."
- Turn on Dictation once in System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation. On older macOS versions the wording may differ.
- Create the task or card and type a short title by hand.
- Open it and click into the description or comment box.
- Press the Microphone key or your Dictation shortcut, and speak.
- Stop with the Microphone key or the shortcut. In these apps Escape may also close the card or panel.
- Set assignee, due date and labels by hand, read it, then save or post.
Setup is in How to use voice to text on a Mac. See the Mac dictation shortcut guide, Mac dictation commands and Mac Dictation not working.
When is a push-to-talk dictation app worth it?
If you write task updates and comments all day across Trello or Asana, chat, email and documents, a hold-to-talk key that works the same everywhere saves time. In ClickUp, compare with Talk to Text first.
SuprFlow is one example. It is a menu-bar app for Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 14 or later. Hold the Fn key, speak, release, and it pastes the text into whichever text field has focus. Speech recognition runs on the Mac with an on-device model; optional cloud formatting sends transcript text, not audio, to the provider you pick. Default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers. It costs $125 for lifetime access on up to 5 Macs you own, with no subscription and a 7-day refund on a first purchase (as of 3 October 2026).
Because it pastes at the cursor, it should work in an ordinary text field; test it in a throwaway card or task with a harmless sentence. It does not set due dates or assignees. We have not run a controlled benchmark against Apple Dictation or ClickUp's Talk to Text.
Which route should you use?
| Built-in | Apple Dictation | System-wide app (SuprFlow as the example) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trello | None documented | Yes | Should work; test first |
| Asana on a Mac | None documented (voice tasks are iOS only) | Yes | Should work; test first |
| ClickUp | Talk to Text; Brain MAX for any text box | Yes | Should work; test first |
| Cost | ClickUp AI depends on plan | Free with macOS | $125 once |
| Start | ClickUp: Fn or custom key in Brain MAX | Microphone key or shortcut | Hold Fn, release to insert |
| Best for | ClickUp teams with AI enabled | Occasional updates | Many updates across many apps |
What goes wrong when dictating into task tools?
- Two tools on the Fn key. ClickUp Brain MAX and SuprFlow both default to holding Fn, and macOS may also use Fn for Dictation or emoji. Give each tool its own key. See why the Fn key opens emoji.
- Return creates a task in Asana. Asana lists Return as "Create a new task" in a task list and Command-Return as "Complete selected task(s)" (Keyboard shortcuts). Apple says "new line" equals pressing Return once, so dictate in the description, not the task list. Asana's shortcut to post a comment is Tab-Return.
- Single-letter shortcuts in Trello. Atlassian's Trello shortcuts include c to archive a card and n to add one. Click into the text box first.
- Recording instead of text. The microphone in a ClickUp comment records a Voice Clip. Use Talk to Text or Dictation for typed words.
- Names become mentions. Brain MAX has a Name Detection setting that converts spoken names to @mentions. Check who will be notified.
- Silence. Apple says Dictation stops after 30 seconds without speech.
What should you check before you save?
- The board, project or list.
- Assignee and due date, set by hand.
- Dates and numbers inside the description.
- Every "not" and "don't".
- Mentions: who gets notified.
- That a stray Return did not create an empty task.
On privacy: ClickUp's Brain MAX keeps previous Talk to Text recordings, which you can play back, export as audio or delete. Asana attaches the original audio to tasks created by voice on iOS, and you can remove it. Once saved, a task or comment lives in your Trello, Asana or ClickUp workspace for whoever has access. See where dictated text goes after insertion.
