Neither Notion nor Obsidian documents a built-in button that types your speech into a page or note. To dictate into either on a Mac, click where you want the text, press the Microphone key to start Apple's free Dictation, and speak. A system-wide dictation app does the same job with a push-to-talk key. Notion has voice input for Notion AI prompts and meeting transcription; Obsidian has an audio recorder and community speech to text plugins. Those are different tools from dictation.
Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.
Does Notion have built-in dictation?
Not for writing in a page. Notion documents two voice features, and neither is voice typing into a block.
| Notion feature | What Notion says | Is it dictation into a page? |
|---|---|---|
| Voice input for Notion AI | "Voice input for Notion AI is now on desktop. Whether you are dictating a longer prompt, or just prefer talking over typing, voice input makes it easier to get things done with your Agent." | No. It dictates a prompt to Notion AI |
| AI Meeting Notes | "Notion AI transcribes your meeting and identifies key points and action items". Needs the Business or Enterprise Plan; type /meet in the desktop app; on a Mac, macOS 13 or later | No. It transcribes and summarises a meeting |
Notion's help pages do not describe a built-in dictation feature for typing into a page as of 1 October 2026. The Notion help centre is the place to recheck.
If you want a summary of a call, AI Meeting Notes is the better tool. If you want your own sentences in a page, use Apple Dictation or a dictation app.
Does Obsidian have built-in dictation?
No. Obsidian's help pages do not describe a built-in dictation feature as of 1 October 2026. The closest core feature is the Audio recorder plugin, which Obsidian says "lets you record and save audio in an Obsidian note." It saves an audio file to your vault and embeds it in the note. The page does not mention transcription.
Speech to text in Obsidian comes from community plugins. Obsidian's community plugin list includes several. Their own descriptions vary: one called Whisper says "Speech-to-text using OpenAI Whisper", while others describe transcribing on your device. Many entries carry the label "This plugin has not been manually reviewed by Obsidian staff."
Read Obsidian's Plugin security page before installing one. It says community plugins "can access files on your computer", "can connect to internet" and "can install additional programs", and adds: "If you're working with sensitive data and wish to install a community plugin, we recommend that you perform an independent security audit on the plugin before using it."
How do you dictate into Notion or Obsidian with Apple Dictation?
This is the free route that needs no plugin. Apple's Dictation guide for macOS 27 says "you can speak to enter text anywhere you can type it."
- Turn on Dictation once in System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation.
- In Notion, click into a text block. In Obsidian, click into the note.
- Press the Microphone key if your keyboard has one, or your Dictation shortcut.
- Speak. Say "new paragraph" for a break.
- Press Escape or the key again to stop.
Setup is covered in How to use voice to text on a Mac. See the shortcut guide, the commands and punctuation list, and Mac Dictation not working if Notion dictation or Obsidian dictation will not start.
When does a system-wide dictation app make sense?
It makes sense if you capture notes many times a day and want push-to-talk, if names and terms keep coming out wrong, or if you want speech recognised on the Mac without installing an Obsidian plugin.
SuprFlow is one example. It is a menu-bar app for Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 14 or later. Hold the Fn key, speak, release, and it pastes the text into whichever text field has focus. Speech recognition runs on the Mac after a one-time model download; see https://suprflow.app/requirements. Default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers, and it has a personal dictionary for names and acronyms. It costs $125 once (as of 1 October 2026), with no free tier or trial.
Because it pastes at the cursor, it should work in an ordinary text field; test it in Notion or Obsidian with a harmless sentence. It does not transcribe audio files or record meetings, so for a recorded lecture or call, a transcription tool or Notion's AI Meeting Notes is the better fit. We have not run a controlled benchmark against Apple Dictation or any plugin.
Which route should you use?
| Built into the app | Apple Dictation | System-wide app (SuprFlow as the example) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Types speech into a Notion page | Not documented | Yes | Should work; test first |
| Types speech into an Obsidian note | Not built in; community plugins | Yes | Should work; test first |
| Cost | AI Meeting Notes needs Business or Enterprise; plugins vary | Free with macOS | $125 once |
| Where speech is processed | Depends on the feature or plugin | Keyboard settings show whether it is on your device | On the Mac |
| Extra code inside your vault | Yes, for Obsidian plugins | No | No |
| Best for | Meeting summaries (Notion) | Most note-taking | Frequent capture, names and jargon |
What does local dictation mean for Notion and Obsidian?
People searching for local dictation in Obsidian usually want two things: speech that is not sent to a cloud service, and notes that stay on their Mac. Those are separate questions.
Where the speech is processed depends on the dictation tool. Apple's Keyboard settings tell you whether general text dictation is processed on your device. A local dictation app recognises speech on the Mac. A plugin that calls a cloud speech service sends audio out.
Where the note lives depends on the app:
- Obsidian. Obsidian's data storage page says it "stores your notes as Markdown-formatted plain text files in a vault. A vault is a folder on your local file system." If you add Obsidian Sync, iCloud or Dropbox, the files sync through that service.
- Notion. Notion's security page says Notion is hosted on "Amazon Web Services (AWS), one of the major cloud service providers." Text you dictate into a Notion page is stored in Notion's cloud, however the speech was recognised.
So local speech plus an unsynced Obsidian vault keeps both steps on your Mac. Local speech plus Notion keeps only the first. Even then, a dictation app can make other network requests, such as licence checks and updates. Where dictated text goes after insertion explains the destination side.
What goes wrong in these two apps?
- Structure. Dictated text arrives as plain sentences. Add headings, lists, links and tags by hand afterwards.
- Wrong block or pane. Text goes to the field with focus. Click the block or note first, and check you are not in a search box or the command palette.
- Dictation stops. Apple says it stops automatically after 30 seconds without speech.
- A recording instead of text. Obsidian's microphone icon in the ribbon is the Audio recorder. It saves audio, not words.
What should you check after dictating a note?
- Names, dates, figures and quoted wording.
- Links and tags, which need typing.
- That the text is in the right page, database row or note.
- For Notion, who the page is shared with before you add anything private.
Questions people ask
Why is Notion dictation not working on my Mac?
Notion does not provide page dictation, so the usual cause is Apple Dictation itself. Check it is turned on, the cursor is in a text block, and the microphone is allowed.
Is there an offline voice dictation plugin for Obsidian?
Some community plugins describe on-device transcription. Check each plugin's own description and Obsidian's plugin security advice; we have not tested them.
Can I dictate into Obsidian without any plugin?
Yes. Apple Dictation or a system-wide dictation app types into the open note.
Does dictating into Notion keep my notes on my Mac?
No. Notion says it is hosted on Amazon Web Services, so page content is stored in its cloud.
