Dictate Jira tickets and Linear issues on a Mac

How to dictate Jira work items, Linear issues and comments on a Mac, which keys to avoid while dictating, and what to check before a teammate reads your ticket.

To dictate a Jira ticket or a Linear issue on a Mac, open the create form (press C in either app), click in the description field, start Apple's built-in Dictation with the Microphone key or your Dictation shortcut, and speak. Type the title, assignee and labels by hand. Neither Atlassian nor Linear documents a dictation feature of its own, so voice dictation in Linear or Jira means system dictation or a push-to-talk app. The traps are keyboard ones: Escape and single-letter shortcuts mean something in both apps.

Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.

Do Jira or Linear have built-in dictation?

No. Atlassian's help pages do not describe a built-in dictation feature for Jira as of 1 October 2026; see Atlassian Support. Linear's help pages do not describe one either; see Linear Docs.

Linear lists a partner integration, TalkThrough, that records you talking through a bug and creates Linear issues. Its page says it transcribes the recording with OpenAI Whisper, then sends the transcript and screenshots to GPT-4 or Claude to write the issue. That is a separate product with its own processing, not dictation into Linear's text fields.

How do you dictate a ticket with Apple Dictation?

Apple's Dictation guide for macOS 27 says "you can speak to enter text anywhere you can type it."

  1. Turn on Dictation once in System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation. On older macOS versions the wording may differ.
  2. In Jira or Linear, press C to open the create form.
  3. Type the title. Short titles with product names and IDs are faster and safer to type.
  4. Click in the description field.
  5. Press the Microphone key if your keyboard has one, or your Dictation shortcut. Speak the steps to reproduce, expected result and actual result. Say "new paragraph" between sections.
  6. Stop Dictation with the same key or shortcut, not Escape (see below).
  7. Fill in assignee, labels and priority by hand, read the description, then create the ticket.

For a comment, press M in Jira, or click "Leave a comment…" in Linear, then dictate.

Setup is in How to use voice to text on a Mac. See the Mac dictation shortcut guide, Mac dictation commands and Mac Dictation not working.

When is a push-to-talk dictation app worth it?

If you write tickets, review comments and status notes all day, a hold-to-talk key that works in Jira, Linear, your code editor and chat is worth a look. So is a personal dictionary, because component names, service names and acronyms are exactly the words general speech recognition gets wrong.

SuprFlow is one example. It is a menu-bar app for Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 14 or later. Hold the Fn key, speak, release, and it pastes the text into whichever text field has focus. Speech recognition runs on the Mac after a one-time model download; see https://suprflow.app/requirements. Default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers. It costs $125 once (as of 1 October 2026), with no free tier or trial.

Because it pastes at the cursor, it should work in an ordinary text field; test it in a throwaway Jira work item or Linear issue with a harmless sentence first. It does not fill in fields such as assignee or priority. We have not run a controlled benchmark against Apple Dictation. If you write one or two tickets a day, Apple's free Dictation is enough.

What goes wrong when dictating into Jira or Linear?

  • Escape closes the form. Apple's guide says to press Escape to stop Dictation. Linear's docs say that if you use Esc or the close button while writing an issue, "a pop-up modal will appear" offering to save a draft. Stop Dictation with the Microphone key or your shortcut.
  • Single-letter shortcuts. Both apps use single letters such as C and M as shortcuts. Click into the field first so dictated words are typed, not treated as commands. Jira lets you turn shortcuts off under Help > Keyboard shortcuts.
  • Mentions and links. Dictation may type "at Sam" as words. Type @ and pick the person so they are notified. In Linear, "@Linear" calls the agent, so only use it when you mean to.
  • Code and IDs. File paths, branch names, ticket keys such as ABC-123, and stack traces should be pasted or typed, not spoken.
  • Markdown. Atlassian says Jira's editor converts markdown syntax into formatting. Check that dictated punctuation has not turned into formatting.
  • Silence. Apple says Dictation stops after 30 seconds without speech.

What should you check before you create the ticket?

  • The project or team, and the issue type.
  • Steps to reproduce, in the right order.
  • Expected and actual results, with every "not" intact.
  • Version numbers, ticket keys, environment names and error codes.
  • People you meant to mention, as real mentions.
  • Nothing from a customer or another project that does not belong in this ticket.

On privacy: the dictation step is separate from where the ticket lives. Once created, the text sits in your Jira site or Linear workspace, visible to whoever has access. Linear notes that issue drafts persist across clients and "are stored for 6 months before being deleted automatically." See where dictated text goes after insertion.

Questions people ask

Can I dictate a Jira comment?

Yes. Press M to jump into the comment field, then use Apple Dictation or another dictation app.

How do I post a Linear comment after dictating?

Linear says to click Comment or press ⌘ + Enter.

Is TalkThrough the same as dictation?

No. It is a third-party integration that records you talking through a bug and creates issues from that. Dictation types into the field you are in.

Why did my dictation close the Linear issue form?

Probably Escape. Linear treats Esc in the issue modal as closing it, with a prompt to save a draft. Stop Dictation with its key instead.
