To dictate to ChatGPT, click the microphone icon in the message box, speak, and edit the text it returns before you send. To dictate to Claude on a Mac, turn on the voice shortcut in Claude Desktop and press Caps Lock to start and stop. Both are dictation: your speech becomes a typed prompt. That is different from voice mode, where the assistant talks back. You can also skip both and use Apple's Dictation or a system-wide dictation app to type into the prompt box.
Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.
What is the difference between dictation and voice mode?
| Dictation | Voice mode | |
|---|---|---|
| What happens | Speech becomes text in the prompt box. You read it, edit it and send it | A spoken conversation. The assistant answers aloud |
| ChatGPT | The microphone icon. OpenAI: use it to "turn a single recording into editable text" | The Voice icon. "ChatGPT Voice lets you speak with ChatGPT and hear a spoken response" |
| Claude | Anthropic: "Dictation converts your speech to text so you can type prompts by speaking" | "A full two-way conversation — you speak to Claude, and Claude speaks back" |
| Use it for | Long, careful prompts | Hands-busy back and forth |
How do you dictate to ChatGPT?
OpenAI's Voice Dictation FAQ describes it in one sentence: "When you press the microphone icon to record an audio message, the recorded audio is sent to our models to be transcribed. The transcription is returned as text, which you can edit before sending as a user message."
- Click in the ChatGPT message box.
- Click the microphone icon and allow microphone access if asked.
- Speak your prompt, then finish the recording.
- Read the transcription, fix it and send.
OpenAI's help centre does not list a keyboard shortcut for dictation or Mac-specific microphone steps as of 1 October 2026, so the exact controls may differ between the browser and the desktop app.
What OpenAI says about the audio:
- Retention. "Audio from dictation will be retained for as long as the chat is part of your chat history." After you delete the chat, the audio clip is deleted within 30 days, with exceptions for security or legal reasons.
- Training. "If you are a consumer user and have chosen to share audio to improve our models, we may train on audio from dictation." Business users' inputs are not trained on by default.
- Opting out. In ChatGPT settings, open data controls and disable "Include your audio recordings", or turn off "Improve the model for everyone".
How do you dictate to Claude on a Mac?
Anthropic documents Mac dictation as part of quick entry in Claude Desktop. It is available on all plans, and voice dictation needs macOS 14 or later.
- Open Claude Desktop and go to Settings > General (under Desktop app).
- Turn on the Voice shortcut. Anthropic says it "is disabled by default because it takes over your Caps Lock key."
- Press Caps Lock once to start dictating. You see your words transcribed in real time.
- Press Caps Lock again to stop.
- Review the message, then click the arrow to send it.
Claude Desktop must be running, though it can be in the background. Anthropic lists two macOS permissions for this: Accessibility for quick entry and Speech recognition for voice dictation, both under System Settings > Privacy & Security.
On the audio, the quick entry page says only: "Voice dictation transcribes your speech to text in real-time. The transcribed text is sent to Claude as part of your message, just like any other text input." Anthropic's separate dictation article is written for iOS and Android. Anthropic's help pages do not describe a dictation microphone in the chat box on the Claude website as of 1 October 2026.
For spoken conversations, Anthropic's voice mode page says to click "the sound wave symbol in the lower right corner of the chat window" on the web or Claude Desktop. Voice mode is in beta.
ChatGPT or Claude dictation not working: what should you check?
| Symptom | Check |
|---|---|
| No microphone prompt, or nothing is heard in the Mac app | System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone. Apple says you can turn access on or off for each app |
| Nothing is heard in the browser | OpenAI says: "If prompted, allow your browser to access your microphone." Check the site's microphone permission, and that the browser itself is allowed in the Mac setting above |
| ChatGPT transcribes the wrong language | OpenAI says to open Settings > Voice > Language and choose your language |
| Caps Lock does nothing in Claude | The voice shortcut is off by default. Turn it on in Settings > General, and check Speech recognition permission |
| Claude dictation is missing | Anthropic says voice dictation needs macOS 14 or later |
Can you use Apple Dictation instead?
Yes, and it works the same way in both assistants, in the browser or the app. Apple's Dictation guide for macOS 27 says "you can speak to enter text anywhere you can type it." Turn it on in System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation, click in the prompt box, press the Microphone key or your shortcut, and speak.
Details are in How to use voice to text on a Mac, the shortcut guide, the commands list and Mac Dictation not working.
One limit for long prompts: Apple says Dictation stops automatically after 30 seconds without speech.
When does a system-wide dictation app make sense?
It makes sense if you move between several assistants and want one key that behaves the same in each, or if you would rather the assistant received only your text and not a recording of your voice.
SuprFlow is one example. It is a menu-bar app for Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 14 or later. Hold the Fn key, speak, release, and it pastes the text into whichever text field has focus. Speech recognition runs on the Mac after a one-time model download; see https://suprflow.app/requirements. Default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers. It costs $125 once (as of 1 October 2026), with no free tier or trial.
Because it pastes at the cursor, it should work in an ordinary text field; test it in the ChatGPT or Claude prompt box with a harmless sentence. We have not run a controlled benchmark against either assistant's dictation.
Be clear about what this changes. The prompt text still goes to OpenAI or Anthropic when you press send. Local speech recognition only changes where the audio is processed.
If you use one assistant and its microphone works for you, the built-in button is the simplest choice.
Which route should you use?
| Built-in dictation | Apple Dictation | System-wide app (SuprFlow as the example) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Start | ChatGPT: microphone icon. Claude Desktop: Caps Lock | Microphone key or shortcut | Hold Fn |
| Audio goes to | ChatGPT: OpenAI's models. Claude Desktop: not stated on the quick entry page | See Apple's note in Keyboard settings | Stays on the Mac for recognition |
| Works in both assistants | No, each has its own | Yes | Yes |
| Cost | Included | Free with macOS | $125 once |
| Edit before sending | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Best for | One assistant, least setup | Occasional prompts | Many prompts across tools |
What should you check before you send a dictated prompt?
- Names, numbers, dates and units. The assistant will take a misheard figure at face value.
- Negations and limits: "do not include", "under 200 words", "only the second file".
- That the prompt is in the right chat or project.
- Whether you said anything you would not have typed, such as a client name or an address.
