Dictate in Figma and Canva on a Mac: text, comments and AI prompts

How to dictate text layers, comments and AI prompts in Figma and Canva on a Mac, which voice buttons are really dictation, and what to check before you share.

To dictate in Figma or Canva on a Mac, click into a text layer, a comment box or a Canva text box, then start Apple's built-in Dictation with the Microphone key or your Dictation shortcut and speak. Both vendors document a voice button, but only for their AI assistants: Figma's agent has a Dictate button for prompts, and Canva AI has a Microphone icon for prompts. Neither documents voice typing for ordinary text on the canvas, and Canva's voice features otherwise record or generate audio.

Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 3 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.

Does Figma have built-in dictation?

Only for prompts to the Figma agent. Figma's Work with the Figma agent in design files page says: "Click Dictate to speak your prompt, or start typing and press Send to run it." You open the prompt box by selecting a layer and clicking Agents, or with Command-Return. Figma lists the agent as available on all plans, "available to try for free while in beta", and only in Figma Design in the desktop app or browser. The page does not say how the spoken prompt is processed.

Two other Figma features use your microphone or a chat box but are not dictation:

  • Audio. Figma's Use audio to chat with your team page describes "live conversations with other collaborators" in Figma Design, FigJam and Slides files, on Professional, Education and Organization plans. Figma says it "will not record or monitor your audio conversations."
  • Cursor chat in FigJam. Press / with nothing selected to type a short message next to your cursor. Figma's cursor chat page says it shows for five seconds after you stop typing.

Figma's help pages do not describe dictation for text layers or comments as of 3 October 2026.

Does Canva have voice typing?

For Canva AI prompts, yes. Canva's Get started with Canva AI page says: go to the homepage, select Canva AI, enter a prompt, and "To use voice input, select the Microphone icon." Canva AI 2.0 is on Pro, Teams, Business and Nonprofit plans; Free and Education users get Canva AI 1.0 features with limited monthly usage, as of 3 October 2026.

Canva's other voice features work with audio, not typed text:

  • Canva AI voice turns typed text into a spoken voiceover. That is text to speech.
  • Record voiceover records audio while your design plays. Canva says it is not available in Docs, Sheets, Whiteboards or Websites.

Canva's help pages do not describe dictation into text boxes or Canva Docs as of 3 October 2026.

How do you dictate text with Apple Dictation?

Apple's Dictation guide for macOS 27 says "you can speak to enter text anywhere you can type it."

  1. Turn on Dictation once in System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation. On older macOS versions the wording may differ.
  2. In Figma, press T for a text layer or C for a comment (Add comments to files). In Canva, click into a text box or a Doc.
  3. Check that the cursor is blinking inside the text.
  4. Press the Microphone key or your Dictation shortcut, and speak.
  5. Stop with the same key. Read the text, then click the send button for a Figma comment.

Setup is in How to use voice to text on a Mac. See the Mac dictation shortcut guide, Mac dictation commands and Mac Dictation not working.

When is a push-to-talk dictation app worth it?

Design work means many short bursts of text: comments, labels, prompts. A hold-to-talk key that works the same in Figma, Canva and your browser suits that.

SuprFlow is one example. It is a menu-bar app for Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 14 or later. Hold the Fn key, speak, release, and it pastes the text into whichever text field has focus. Speech recognition runs on the Mac with an on-device model; optional cloud formatting sends transcript text, not audio, to the provider you pick. Default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers. It costs $125 for lifetime access on up to 5 Macs you own, with no subscription and a 7-day refund on a first purchase (as of 3 October 2026).

Because it pastes at the cursor, it should work in an ordinary text field; test it in a Figma comment or a Canva text box with a harmless sentence. We have not run a controlled benchmark against Apple Dictation. If you only want to speak a prompt to Figma's agent or Canva AI, their own buttons are the simplest choice.

What goes wrong when dictating into design tools?

  • No text cursor, no text. Figma uses single letters such as T and C as tool shortcuts. Click into the text and check the cursor is blinking before you speak.
  • Return makes a line, not a send. Figma's text guide says "Press Enter or Return to create a new line" in a text layer. Apple says the spoken "new line" is "equivalent to pressing the Return key once", so it behaves the same way.
  • Escape. Apple's guide lists Escape as one way to stop Dictation. In an editor, Escape may also take you out of the text box. Stop with the Microphone key or shortcut instead.
  • Audio by mistake. In Canva, the Record voiceover control records sound. Use Dictation for typed words.
  • Silence. Apple says Dictation stops after 30 seconds without speech.

What should you check before you share the design?

  • Product names, client names and taglines, letter by letter.
  • Prices, dates and phone numbers.
  • Line breaks inside headings and buttons.
  • @mentions in Figma comments, which notify people by email.
  • Text that overflows its box after dictation.
  • Prompts you spoke to an AI assistant, before you accept its changes.

On privacy: Figma says anyone with at least can-view access to a file can see its comments, and that it does not keep a log of FigJam cursor chat messages. Canva keeps Canva AI chats in your chat history, where you can delete them; Canva says deleted chats cannot be restored. See where dictated text goes after insertion.
