When dictation in ChatGPT is not working on a Mac, the microphone is almost always blocked at one of two levels: the browser has not been allowed to use the microphone on chatgpt.com, or macOS has not given the browser (or the ChatGPT app) microphone access. Fix both, check that the right microphone is selected and not muted, and set your language in ChatGPT's voice settings. If you need to get a prompt in right now, Apple's free Dictation types into the ChatGPT box as well.
This page covers fixing it. For how ChatGPT's dictation works and what OpenAI does with the audio, see Dictate to ChatGPT or Claude on a Mac.
Are you using dictation or Voice?
ChatGPT has two microphone features, and they are easy to mix up. OpenAI's ChatGPT Voice article says: "Use ChatGPT Dictation when you want to record a prompt, review and edit its transcription, and then send it as text." Voice is "a live, back-and-forth conversation."
| You want | Click | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Your words as editable text | The microphone icon | OpenAI: the recording is "sent to our models to be transcribed," and you can edit it before sending |
| A spoken conversation | The Voice icon | ChatGPT answers aloud |
If you clicked Voice and expected text, nothing is broken.
Which symptom matches yours?
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No microphone prompt, and nothing records, in Chrome | chatgpt.com is blocked from the microphone | Chrome Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Microphone, allow chatgpt.com |
| Same, in Safari | Safari's Microphone setting for the site is Deny | Safari → Settings → Websites → Microphone, set chatgpt.com to Ask or Allow |
| The browser shows it is allowed, but still silence | macOS has not allowed the browser itself | System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone, turn on your browser |
| Nothing records in the ChatGPT Mac app | macOS has not allowed the app | Same setting, turn on ChatGPT |
| It records, but transcribes silence or nonsense | Wrong microphone, or muted | Check the headset mute switch, Chrome's default microphone, and System Settings → Sound → Input |
| Text comes out in the wrong language | Voice language setting | ChatGPT Settings → Voice → Language |
| You cannot change the setting at all | A work or school browser is managed | Ask your administrator |
| The Mac app will not install | Unsupported macOS | OpenAI lists macOS 14 or later |
How do you enable the mic for ChatGPT in Chrome?
Google's Use your camera and microphone in Chrome page gives these steps:
- When chatgpt.com asks to use the microphone, choose Allow while visiting the site or Allow this time.
- If you chose Never allow earlier, open Chrome, select More → Settings, then Privacy and security → Site settings.
- Under "Permissions", select Microphone.
- Under "Not allowed to use your camera or microphone", select chatgpt.com and change it to Allow.
- On the same Microphone screen, use the down arrow to choose your default microphone.
Google also covers the Mac layer: Chrome "may ask permission to use your camera or microphone." In that dialog, select Open settings, turn on Microphone, and let Chrome quit and reopen if asked.
Google adds that at work or school, "your network administrator can set camera and microphone settings."
How do you enable the mic for ChatGPT in Safari?
Apple's Websites settings in Safari page:
- In Safari, choose Safari → Settings, then click Websites.
- Click Microphone in the list on the left.
- Find chatgpt.com under Currently Open Websites or Configured Websites, and choose Ask or Allow from its pop-up menu.
Apple says Deny means "the site can't use your microphone." Reload the ChatGPT tab and click the microphone icon again.
Other browsers have their own site permission settings; look for "site settings" or "permissions" and then Microphone.
How do you allow the microphone on the Mac itself?
Browser permission is not enough if macOS blocks the browser or app. Apple's Control access to the microphone on Mac page (macOS 27 edition):
- Choose Apple menu → System Settings, then click Privacy & Security in the sidebar. You may need to scroll down.
- Click Microphone.
- Turn on access for your browser, or for ChatGPT if you use the Mac app.
Apple notes that "the Recording Indicator light in Control Center shows when your computer's microphone is in use or has been used recently." If it never lights when you click the microphone icon, the recording is not starting.
If your screen differs, search System Settings (or System Preferences on older Macs) for "Microphone".
The ChatGPT Mac app
OpenAI's download article says the current desktop app combines Chat, Work and Codex, the previous app is now called ChatGPT Classic, and the system requirement is "macOS 14 and either Apple Silicon (M1 or better) or an Intel processor." If you have both installed, check that the one you are using is the one allowed in the Microphone list.
Is the right microphone selected and unmuted?
Google's microphone troubleshooting starts with the basics: make sure "the mute switch on the cord is off" on a headset, and that you are not muted on the site.
Then check the Mac's input. Apple's sound input page says to choose System Settings → Sound → Input, select the device you are speaking into, and drag the input volume slider. If you connected a headset or another microphone, make sure it is the one selected; Why Bluetooth headsets hurt dictation quality explains how a headset can also affect accuracy.
Why does ChatGPT transcribe the wrong language?
OpenAI's language article says the language you speak "might not be accurately reflected" and gives the fix: open Settings, select Voice, then Language, and choose your preferred language.
Still not working?
Google's last steps for a microphone that will not work in Chrome are to restart Chrome and then restart the computer. If it still fails, test the microphone in another app. If it fails everywhere, the microphone or the Mac's input settings are the problem, not ChatGPT.
Can you dictate to ChatGPT another way?
Yes. Apple's Dictation works "anywhere you can type," including the ChatGPT message box in a browser or the app. Turn it on in System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation, click in the prompt box, and press the Microphone key or your Dictation shortcut. The website's microphone permission does not apply to it, because macOS is doing the listening. It stops after 30 seconds without speech.
A third-party dictation app works the same way. SuprFlow, which publishes this guide, is one: hold Fn, speak, release, and it pastes the text into whichever field has focus, with speech recognised on the Mac. The prompt text still goes to OpenAI when you send it. It needs Microphone and Accessibility permission in macOS, an Apple Silicon Mac with macOS 14 or later, and costs $125 once with no free tier. If ChatGPT's own button works for you once fixed, you do not need it.
