Dictate to Gemini and Perplexity on a Mac: voice input options

How to dictate prompts to Gemini or Perplexity on a Mac: the Gemini app mic and Speak to Window, Perplexity's hold-Fn voice, Apple Dictation and Fn clashes.

To dictate to Gemini on a Mac, click the Mic in the Gemini Mac app, say your prompt, then click Send. Perplexity's Mac app lets you hold Fn to speak a request. In a browser, click in the prompt box at gemini.google.com or perplexity.ai and use Apple's built-in Dictation. The catch on a Mac is the Fn key: Gemini, Perplexity, Apple Dictation and some dictation apps can all want it, so decide which one owns it.

Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.

What voice input does Gemini have on a Mac?

Google's Use the Gemini app on Mac page describes two ways to use your voice:

  • Mic in the app. Click the Mic to dictate a prompt, then click Send. This is dictation of a prompt you review first.
  • Speak to Window. For working in other apps: "press and hold the fn key. Gemini will start working as you speak. When you release fn, your query is submitted." Google says Gemini will "lightly clean up your words, like removing any 'Um' sounds, and drop the text at your cursor." You change its shortcuts in Gemini > Settings > Speak to Window, choosing a "Tap to speak" or "Hold while speaking" shortcut. Google notes that "Speak to Window is rolling out over time, so it may not be available to you yet."

The Mac app needs "macOS Sequoia (15.0) or later with Apple Silicon, 8 GB of RAM or more." Option-Space opens the Gemini chat window.

In Chrome, Google's Go Live with Gemini in Chrome lets you "talk naturally with Gemini" while you browse. That is a spoken conversation, not dictation. Google's Use Gemini Apps page for computers, which lists Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera and "Edgium" as supported browsers, does not describe a dictation button for gemini.google.com as of 1 October 2026.

What voice input does Perplexity have on a Mac?

Perplexity's Work with Browsers and Apps page says voice "lets you speak a request instead of typing it," and: "On Mac, hold FN to start voice mode, then speak the task you want Perplexity to perform." You can change it in Settings → Shortcuts. The desktop app's Get started page lists macOS 15 or later and a Microphone permission to "enable voice input and audio features."

Perplexity's help centre does not describe a dictation button in the web app as of 1 October 2026; see the Perplexity Help Center.

Voice mode or dictation? Voice mode hands your spoken request to the assistant to act on. Dictation types your words into a box so you can read and edit them before anything is sent. For a long or careful prompt, dictation is safer.

How do you dictate a prompt with Apple Dictation?

This works in any browser and in both apps' text boxes. Apple's Dictation guide for macOS 27 says "you can speak to enter text anywhere you can type it."

  1. Turn on Dictation once in System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation. On older macOS versions the wording may differ.
  2. Click in the prompt box at gemini.google.com or perplexity.ai, or in the app.
  3. Press the Microphone key if your keyboard has one, or your Dictation shortcut, and speak.
  4. Stop with the same key, read the prompt, then send it.

Setup is in How to use voice to text on a Mac. See the Mac dictation shortcut guide, Mac dictation commands and Mac Dictation not working.

When is a separate push-to-talk app worth it?

If you want one hold-to-talk key in every app, with speech recognised on the Mac, a system-wide dictation app is the other route. If you mostly talk to Gemini, its own Speak to Window may already cover you.

SuprFlow is one example. It is a menu-bar app for Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 14 or later. Hold the Fn key, speak, release, and it pastes the text into whichever text field has focus. Speech recognition runs on the Mac after a one-time model download; see https://suprflow.app/requirements. Default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers. It costs $125 once (as of 1 October 2026), with no free tier or trial. It only types; it does not answer questions or act on files.

Because it pastes at the cursor, it should work in an ordinary text field; test it in the Gemini or Perplexity prompt box with a harmless sentence first. If either assistant also uses Fn, switch SuprFlow to a Custom Hotkey; see how to change the SuprFlow hotkey. We have not run a controlled benchmark against any of these.

What goes wrong when dictating to an AI assistant?

  • Two apps want Fn. Gemini's Speak to Window and Perplexity's voice both default to holding Fn, and SuprFlow does too. Your Mac's own Fn (Globe) key setting can also start Dictation or open emoji. Give Fn to one app and change the others. See why Fn opens emoji.
  • Released means submitted. In Speak to Window, Google says releasing Fn submits your query. Plan the sentence before you press.
  • Enter sends. Return usually sends the prompt in a chat box. Apple's guide says "new line" is "equivalent to pressing the Return key once," so it may send half a prompt.
  • Silence. Apple says Dictation stops after 30 seconds without speech.

What should you check before you send a prompt?

  • The prompt says what you meant, including every "not" and "only".
  • Names, numbers, dates and file names.
  • Nothing confidential you would not paste into the assistant.
  • Which chat or task the prompt is going into.

On privacy: the prompt you send is stored by the assistant, however you dictated it. Google's Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says that with Keep Activity on, "your activity is auto-deleted after 18 months" by default, and "a subset of chats are reviewed by human reviewers." Perplexity says it retains personal information "as long as your account is active," per How long Perplexity retains your data, and its desktop help says "Incognito searches are not stored." See where dictated text goes after insertion.
