Choose Superwhisper if you want the option to keep speech on your Mac, need dictation that works offline, or want to pay once instead of every year. Choose Typeless if cloud processing is acceptable and you want polished, rewritten text with almost no setup, voice commands on selected text, translation as you speak, and apps on Linux and Android as well as Mac. The decision here is not between two similar cloud services: Superwhisper is a configurable app that can run fully local, while Typeless states that all transcription happens in its cloud.
Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.
We have not run a controlled benchmark of either product. This page reports what each company documents and gives you a test to run yourself.
Who should pick which?
- You dictate on planes, on poor connections, or under a rule that audio stays on the device: Superwhisper with a local voice model. Typeless has no offline mode on the pages we read.
- You want the app to tidy, restructure and translate what you say, without choosing models: Typeless.
- You want to pay once: Superwhisper Lifetime. Typeless lists monthly and yearly billing only.
- You use Linux: Typeless lists a Linux app. Superwhisper lists Linux as coming soon.
- You want to write your own prompts and pick models: Superwhisper Pro.

How do the privacy approaches differ?
Typeless gives everyone the same strict retention position without any settings: according to its Data Controls page, updated 25 August 2026, audio and context are "immediately discarded once the result is returned to your device", and dictation is never used for training. But every dictation, with some on-screen context, goes to the cloud. Is Typeless safe? covers what its pages leave open.
Superwhisper puts the choice in your hands. Its sensitive-data guide explains that voice-to-text and AI processing are separate stages, each local or cloud. With local models for both, it says no audio or text leaves your machine. With a cloud model, audio or text does. That flexibility is useful, and it also means you have to check each mode. Is Superwhisper safe? lists what to look at.

Choose Superwhisper if…
- You need dictation with no connection.
- Audio must be able to stay on the device.
- You want a one-time licence, or the cheaper annual plan.
- You want file transcription, meeting recording or your own API keys.
- You like tuning modes and prompts.
Choose Typeless if…
- Cloud processing is allowed for your material.
- You want heavy editing and formatting done for you, with no model choices.
- You want to select text and tell the app to rewrite, shorten or translate it.
- You need Linux, or the same tool on all five platforms.
- You prefer a no-storage, no-training position that needs no settings changes.
How do you test both in 15 minutes?
Both have free plans. Use made-up content.
- Install both (4 minutes). Grant the permissions each asks for. Superwhisper's default Mac shortcut is Option-Space; note Typeless's shortcut so they do not clash. In Superwhisper, run an AI-formatted mode while you still have the 3,000 Pro words, so you compare like with like.
- Dictate a rambling message (4 minutes). "Hey Ingrid, so, um, the proposal is nearly done. Actually it needs one more table. Send it to Rafael by the 22nd, no wait, the 23rd. The fee stays at 18,900 dollars."
- Compare the output. Check both names, the date correction and the amount. Then check that the cleanup kept your meaning: is "it needs one more table" still there?
- Turn Wi-Fi off and repeat (3 minutes). Expect Typeless to stop and a local Superwhisper mode to keep working.
- Try your jargon (4 minutes). Two sentences with your own names and terms. Add misses to each dictionary and retry.
Fewer corrections, with your meaning intact, decides it.
A third option
If you want speech recognised on a Mac without configuring modes, SuprFlow is a narrower app: hold Fn, speak, release, and the text is pasted at the cursor. Its Default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers, not the rewriting Typeless does. It costs $125 once for up to five Macs you own, needs Apple Silicon and macOS 14 or later, and has no free tier, translation, Linux, Windows or phone app. If you want those, or local dictation for free, the two apps above are the better choice. SuprFlow vs Typeless and SuprFlow vs Superwhisper compare them.
