Willow Pro is worth paying for if the free Basic plan's weaker model does not handle your voice well enough, you dictate long passages, you use Willow on a Mac and an iPhone or Windows PC, and you are comfortable with cloud transcription in the United States. It is probably not worth paying for if Basic already works for you, if you need Android today, if audio must stay on your device, or if you would rather pay once than subscribe. You can find out which group you are in for free with the 15-minute test below.
Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.
This is not a review and there is no score. We make a competing Mac app, and we have not run a controlled test of Willow's accuracy or speed. What follows is what Willow documents, who that suits, and how to judge it yourself.
What do you get, according to Willow?
As of 1 October 2026. Sources: Willow pricing, plans overview, dictation guide and download page.
| Area | What Willow documents |
|---|---|
| Price | Basic: $0. Pro: $15 per user a month, or $12 a month billed annually. Business: $35 a month, or $28 billed annually. Enterprise: custom. |
| Basic (free) | "Unlimited weaker speech-to-text model (Frontier Mini)", limited personalization, 20 Scribe uses a week. |
| What Pro adds | The "smartest speech-to-text model (Frontier Pro)", priority transcription, memory of your writing style, unlimited Scribe, longer dictations. The plans overview also lists offline dictation. |
| What Business adds | Enforced privacy mode, SOC 2 Type II, enforced HIPAA compliance, admin and team controls. |
| Platforms | Mac, Windows and iPhone. Android "Coming soon". |
| How it works on a Mac | Hold Fn, speak, release; text is formatted and inserted at the cursor. Double-tap for hands-free. |
| Privacy | Private Mode by default: no retention of audio or dictated text, no training. Details in Is Willow Voice safe?. |
The strengths are a no-retention default without touching settings, a free plan with no stated word cap on the pricing page, and a BAA any user can sign.
What limits does Willow document?
- It transcribes in the cloud. Willow's privacy help article says it uses cloud models. An offline mode is advertised, without detail on which plans or model.
- The free limit is described two ways. The pricing page says Basic gives unlimited use of Frontier Mini. The plans overview chart lists a word limit of 2,000 a week on Free. Check the limit in the app.
- Session length. The plans overview lists 5 minutes of recording per session on Free and 8 minutes on paid plans.
- No Android app yet.
- It is a subscription. The pricing page lists monthly and annual billing only, and the pages we read do not state a refund window.
Who is Willow worth it for, and who should choose something else?
| If this is you | A sensible choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You dictate short messages and Frontier Mini gets your words right | Willow Basic | Free. Pro adds the stronger model, not a new kind of tool. |
| You dictate long emails or documents and Basic needs too many fixes | Willow Pro, annual | Stronger model and longer sessions; $144 a year on annual billing. |
| You want a no-training, no-retention default without changing settings | Willow | Private Mode is on from the start. |
| You run a team that needs privacy mode enforced for everyone | Willow Business or Enterprise | Enforced Private Mode and admin controls are listed there. |
| You dictate health information | Willow with a signed BAA, after asking your compliance officer | Willow offers a BAA to individual users. A BAA is one part of compliance. |
| You use an Android phone | Something else for now | Android is listed as coming soon. Wispr Flow lists Android; see Wispr Flow vs Willow Voice. |
| A rule says audio must stay on the device | A local Mac app | Willow's normal mode sends audio to its cloud. |
| You dislike subscriptions and only use a Mac | A one-time purchase | See Willow Voice alternatives. |
Where SuprFlow fits, honestly: it is a Mac-only app for Apple Silicon and macOS 14 or later that runs speech recognition on the Mac, with local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers. It costs $125 once for up to five Macs you own, with a 7-day refund on a first purchase. It has no free tier, no trial, no Scribe-style drafting, no phone or Windows app, no SOC 2 report or BAA, and no team console. If you need any of those, Willow is the better choice. If you want local speech on your own Macs without a subscription, SuprFlow is one option to compare. SuprFlow vs Willow Voice sets them side by side.
How can you test Willow in 15 minutes before paying?
Use Basic. The script is fictional, so nothing private is sent anywhere.
- Install and set up (3 minutes). Download from willowvoice.com, drag Willow to Applications, create an account and allow Microphone and Accessibility.
- Check privacy settings (1 minute). Confirm Private Mode is on.
- Dictate an email (2 minutes). In your mail app, hold Fn and say: "Hi Okonkwo, the catering quote is 4,350 dollars, not 5,430. We need, um, 60 sorry 65 lunches. Please confirm by Thursday the 18th. Thanks, Ines." Release.
- Check five things. The name, both figures, the lunch correction, the date and the punctuation.
- Dictate into your hardest app (3 minutes). A browser form, a chat app or a code editor.
- Try your vocabulary (3 minutes). Two sentences with a colleague's surname, a product name and an acronym. Add misses to the dictionary and repeat.
- Count your fixes and try offline (3 minutes). Count corrections, then turn off Wi-Fi and dictate once to see what your plan does.
Run the same script with Apple Dictation and one other app on your shortlist. How to run a fair Mac dictation comparison has a fuller method.
Pay for Pro if Basic needed clearly more fixes than you will tolerate and Pro's monthly price is worth that to you. Starting on monthly billing keeps the commitment small.
Questions people ask
Is Willow Voice good?
We have not benchmarked it, so we will not rate it. Willow documents context-aware formatting, a dictionary, Scribe and apps for Mac, Windows and iPhone. Run the test above with your own voice.
Is Willow Pro worth it over the free plan?
Only if the stronger Frontier Pro model, longer sessions or unlimited Scribe make a difference you can measure. Use Basic for a week first.
Is Willow Voice worth it for teams?
If your organisation accepts US cloud processing and wants privacy mode enforced for everyone, Business lists that with SOC 2 Type II. Ask for the report before buying.
Can I cancel Willow if it is not worth it for me?
Yes. Willow's cancellation article says Mac subscriptions are handled through Stripe and iPhone subscriptions through Apple. Ask support about refunds before paying for a year.
