The best free dictation app for a Mac is usually the one already on it: Apple's built-in Dictation, which costs nothing and, on newer Macs, got a better model in September 2026. If you want push-to-talk with a speech model on your Mac and no word limit, try Superwhisper Free, Spokenly's free local models or Handy. If you want cloud cleanup and will stay under 2,000 words a week, Wispr Flow Free works. If you mostly transcribe recordings, MacWhisper Free is built for that. Each is free in a different way, so this guide starts from your need, not from leaving a paid app.
Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.
We have not run a controlled benchmark of these apps, so none is ranked for accuracy. A 15-minute test is near the end.
What does "free" cost you with each app?
As of 1 October 2026, from each product's own page (linked in the first column).

|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Dictation | Built-in voice to text in any text field; auto-punctuation in supported languages | No personal word list; stops after 30 seconds of silence; on-device only for some Macs and languages | On your Mac or Apple's servers; Keyboard settings tell you which |

| Wispr Flow Free | The full cloud service with cleanup, dictionary and snippets | 2,000 words a week on desktop; needs internet | In Wispr's cloud |

Which free option fits your need?
- You dictate a few messages a day: Apple Dictation. Nothing to install.
- You want to hold a key, talk, and let go, all day, for free: Superwhisper Free, Spokenly or Handy.
- You want filler words and self-corrections tidied for you: Wispr Flow Free, while you stay under its weekly limit.
- You need dictation offline: Superwhisper Free, Spokenly or Handy, or Apple Dictation where your settings show on-device processing. Best offline dictation app for Mac goes further.
- You transcribe recordings, interviews or lectures: MacWhisper Free.
- You want to read the code: Handy, or VoiceInk built from source.
- You also use Windows or Linux: Handy and Spokenly cover both; Superwhisper and Wispr cover Windows.
Apple Dictation: start here
Apple's Dictation guide for macOS 27 says to choose Apple menu → System Settings → Keyboard, go to Dictation and turn it on. The text below that setting tells you whether general dictation is "processed on your device and not sent to Siri servers". Apple says you can dictate text of any length without a timeout, and that Dictation stops after 30 seconds without speech. If your screen differs, search System Settings for "Dictation". How to use voice to text on a Mac has the full steps.
The September 2026 change matters for this list. Apple announced on 14 September 2026 that Dictation on supported devices "now captures what users say as polished text with greater precision, automatically handling capitalization, punctuation, and formatting". Apple lists that for a Mac with M3 or later and at least 12GB of unified memory, and its feature availability page lists "More advanced Dictation" for English variants only. Elsewhere, expect the older behaviour.
Free push-to-talk apps with local models
Superwhisper Free is the free tier of a paid product. Its plans page says new users get 3,000 words of Pro features, after which "the app falls back to the Free plan; nothing is deleted." From then on you get plain local Whisper dictation without AI formatting. Superwhisper pricing shows what Pro adds.
Spokenly says on-device Whisper and Parakeet models are free "with no word caps, no trial clock, and no credit card", and that "Everything local is free forever in every plan." The app is proprietary. Spokenly pricing covers Pro.
Handy describes itself as "A free, open source, and extensible speech-to-text application that works completely offline." You hold a shortcut to record or tap to toggle. It runs on macOS, Windows and Linux. The trade-off is that it is simple by design.
Free with a limit: Wispr Flow Free
Wispr Flow Free is the whole cloud service, cleanup included, up to 2,000 words a week on desktop and 1,000 on mobile. Wispr's word cap article says the count resets every Sunday and unused words do not carry over. It needs an internet connection, and "Improve the model for everyone" starts on for free accounts. Is Wispr Flow free? covers the details.
Free for recordings: MacWhisper Free
MacWhisper Free transcribes audio and video files on your Mac and exports text and subtitles. Its free column also lists system-wide dictation, with "high quality" dictation in Pro. Download it from macwhisper.com: the App Store edition, Whisper Transcription, does not include system-wide dictation, according to MacWhisper's edition comparison.
Free if you build it: VoiceInk
VoiceInk's README says "you can build VoiceInk yourself" under GPL v3. Its build instructions list macOS 15.0 or later and Xcode, and say local builds "do not include iCloud dictionary sync or automatic updates". If that is too much, the ready-made app has a free trial and then a one-time price; see VoiceInk pricing.
How do you test free apps in 15 minutes?
- Try Apple Dictation first (3 minutes). In your mail app, dictate: "Hi Clemence, the deposit is 2,180 dollars, not 2,810. The viewing is Thursday the 15th, sorry, Friday the 16th. Thanks, Arjun."
- Check the name, both amounts and the corrected date. If you would send it after one or two fixes, you may be done.
- Install one local app (5 minutes). Download a model and dictate the same passage.
- Turn Wi-Fi off and repeat (2 minutes) if offline use matters.
- Dictate two sentences of your own jargon (5 minutes) in each, add misses to any vocabulary list, and retry.
Count corrections. A free tool that needs few fixes in your own apps is the right one.
If you end up paying
SuprFlow is not free: it costs $125 once for up to five Macs you own, has no free tier or trial, and is worth considering only if none of the free options above suits you; Free vs paid Mac dictation helps decide.
