Voice dictation for Windsurf (now Devin Desktop) on a Mac

Dictate prompts to Windsurf's Cascade on a Mac: what its docs say about voice input, Apple Dictation, push-to-talk apps, and what to check before you send.

Windsurf's Cascade agent has its own voice input: its documentation says it can "transcribe your speech to text" in the Cascade panel. You can also click in the Cascade input and use Apple Dictation, or a system-wide push-to-talk app that pastes your words at the cursor. Whichever you use, read the prompt before you press Enter, because Cascade can edit files and run terminal commands. Windsurf is now called Devin Desktop; the steps are the same.

Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.

Is Windsurf now Devin Desktop?

Yes. The old windsurf.com address now redirects to the Devin Desktop page, which says: "Devin Desktop is the new name for Windsurf. We're building on the IDE foundation of Windsurf to introduce the command center for managing all your agents in one place." Windsurf's documentation links also redirect to Devin Desktop's docs. Cascade, the agent panel, keeps its name.

Does Windsurf have built-in voice input?

Yes, for Cascade. The Cascade overview lists voice input among its features and has one sentence on it: "Use Voice input to use your voice to interact with Cascade. In its current form it can transcribe your speech to text."

That is the whole description. As of 1 October 2026 the page does not document:

  • a keyboard shortcut for voice input,
  • where your audio is transcribed,
  • which languages are supported,
  • whether the transcript is sent automatically or waits for you.

The page shows a video instead of steps. Look for the voice control in the Cascade input on your own install, and try it with a harmless prompt before using it on real work. If you need to know where the audio goes, ask Devin Desktop's support or check its current security documentation; the Cascade page does not say.

How do you dictate into Cascade with Apple Dictation?

Apple's Dictation guide for macOS 27 says you can "speak to enter text anywhere you can type it".

  1. Turn Dictation on in System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation. If your macOS version looks different, search System Settings for "Dictation".
  2. Click in the Cascade input box.
  3. Press the Microphone key or your Dictation shortcut and speak.
  4. Stop, read the prompt, fix names, then send.

Apple says Dictation stops after 30 seconds without speech, and tells you to check Keyboard settings to see whether your Dictation is processed on the device. Setup is in how to use voice to text on a Mac; shortcuts are in the Mac dictation shortcut guide.

Apple Dictation also works in the editor itself, which is handy for code comments and commit messages.

When does a push-to-talk app fit with Windsurf?

When you dictate into more than Cascade: a terminal agent, a browser, Slack. A system-wide app gives you one key everywhere.

SuprFlow is one example. It is a menu-bar app for Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 14 or later. Hold the Fn key, speak, release, and it pastes the text at the cursor in the focused field. Speech recognition runs on the Mac after a one-time model download; see https://suprflow.app/requirements. Default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers. It costs $125 once (as of 1 October 2026), with no free tier or trial. It should work wherever you can paste text; test it in the Cascade input with a harmless prompt. We have not run a controlled benchmark against Cascade's own voice input.

If tagging files in your prompt by voice matters, Wispr Flow's developer page says it "tags files in Cursor and Windsurf". SuprFlow does not do that. Wispr Flow's known-limitations article says "Dictation is transcribed in the cloud."

What is dictation good and bad at in Cascade?

Good:

  • Explaining what you want built or fixed, in full sentences.
  • Giving context: "the checkout page breaks when the cart is empty".
  • Stating constraints and what done looks like.
  • Commit messages and pull-request descriptions.

Needs a review pass or a dictionary entry:

  • File paths, component names and function names.
  • Flags, package names and version numbers.
  • Symbols: brackets, underscores, dots, slashes.

Describe the code in words and let Cascade find it, then type exact names by hand. For names you say every day, add a personal dictionary entry; see teaching SuprFlow names and acronyms and voice snippets on a Mac.

What should you check before you send a dictated prompt?

Cascade can run terminal commands. Devin Desktop's terminal documentation describes four auto-execution levels, from Disabled ("All commands require manual approval") to Turbo ("All commands are auto-executed immediately, except those in your deny list"). The higher your level, the more a misheard word can do before you see it.

  • File and symbol names are exact.
  • Negations survived: "don't", "without", "only".
  • Anything about deleting, migrating, force-pushing or production was typed, not spoken.
  • No key, token or password was spoken.
  • Your auto-execution level suits the task. A deny-list entry such as rm *, which the docs give as an example, keeps removals behind approval.

If something goes wrong, the Cascade page describes checkpoints and reverts, with a warning: "Reverts are currently irreversible, so be careful!"

Where do your words go?

A spoken prompt can describe proprietary code, customers or a security issue.
