JetBrains IDEs such as IntelliJ IDEA and PyCharm have no built-in voice input that JetBrains documents, so on a Mac you dictate with Apple Dictation or a system-wide push-to-talk app. Click in the AI Chat input, the editor, the commit message box or the terminal, start dictation, and speak. Read the text before you send it, especially to an agent, which can change several files at once.

Do IntelliJ IDEA and PyCharm have built-in voice input?
No. JetBrains AI Assistant's documentation does not describe built-in voice input as of 1 October 2026. Its AI Chat and About AI Assistant pages, for version 2026.2, describe typed prompts. AI Assistant works in IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, GoLand, PhpStorm, Rider, RubyMine, RustRover, CLion, DataGrip and DataSpell, so the same advice applies across them.
One plugin did offer voice input. The Windsurf plugin's Cascade overview says you can "use your voice to interact with Cascade". The same page now says: "Cascade is being deprecated and the Windsurf JetBrains plugin is in maintenance mode. Newer JetBrains IDE releases can break the legacy plugin." It is not a route to build on.
What does AI Chat do with a dictated prompt?
The AI Chat page describes the pieces that matter:
- Two modes. In Chat mode, the AI "does not apply changes to your project automatically." Agents "can perform multi-step actions in your project, modify multiple files", and you "keep or roll back the changes".
- The Send button "submits your message to the AI model" and "allows you to choose how to send the prompt and to configure input shortcuts". Check which key sends on your setup before you dictate.
- Context. You can attach "files, folders, images, symbols, commits, or other elements". Spoken words cannot attach a file; add it with the attachment button after dictating.
How do you dictate in a JetBrains IDE with Apple Dictation?
Apple's Dictation guide for macOS 27 says you can "speak to enter text anywhere you can type it".
- Turn Dictation on in System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation. On another macOS version, search System Settings for "Dictation".
- Open the AI Chat tool window and click in the input.
- Press the Microphone key or your Dictation shortcut, speak, and stop.
- Attach any files or symbols, read the prompt, and send.
Apple says Dictation stops after 30 seconds without speech, and that the spoken "new line" command is "equivalent to pressing the Return key once". If Return sends in your chat setup, avoid that command. Setup is in how to use voice to text on a Mac; shortcut choices are in the Mac dictation shortcut guide.
The same works in the commit message box and in comments in the editor. Both are prose, which dictation handles well.
Do JetBrains shortcuts clash with a dictation key?
They can. JetBrains' keyboard shortcuts guide tells you to "enable function keys and check for possible conflicts with global OS shortcuts", and its shortcut configuration page says IDE shortcuts cannot begin with Fn because it "is reserved for hardware functions". Its own example conflict is ⌃Space, which is basic code completion in IntelliJ IDEA and selects the previous input source in macOS.
Before choosing a dictation shortcut, check it against your keymap. If you press Fn with F-keys for debugging or refactoring, test that a hold-Fn dictation key does not fire by accident, or pick a different one.
When does a push-to-talk app fit?
When you dictate into the IDE, a terminal agent, a browser and chat apps, and want one key everywhere. SuprFlow is one example. It is a menu-bar app for Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 14 or later. Hold the Fn key, speak, release, and it pastes the text at the cursor in the focused field; you can also set a Custom Hotkey that toggles recording, which helps if Fn is busy with F-keys. Speech recognition runs on the Mac after a one-time model download; see https://suprflow.app/requirements. Default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers. It costs $125 once (as of 1 October 2026), with no free tier or trial.
It should work wherever you can paste text; test it in AI Chat with a harmless prompt. If you dictate a prompt or two a day, Apple Dictation is free and may be enough.
What is dictation good and bad at in IntelliJ IDEA and PyCharm?
Good:
- Explaining a task or a failing test in plain sentences.
- Constraints: "keep the public API the same", "don't add a dependency".
- Commit messages, pull-request summaries, Javadoc and docstrings.
Needs a review pass, typing or a dictionary entry:
- Java and Kotlin camelCase names (
findUserById) and Python snake_case names (load_config). - Package paths, module names and file paths.
- Annotations, decorators and symbols:
@Override,@pytest.fixture,->,::. - Library names that sound like ordinary words.
Describe the code and let the agent find it, or type exact names after dictating. For names you use every day, see teaching SuprFlow names and acronyms and voice snippets on a Mac.
What should you check before you send?
- Chat or Agent mode: is this meant to change files?
- Class, function and file names are exact, or attached as context.
- Negations survived: "don't", "without", "only".
- Anything about deleting, migrating, force-pushing or production was typed.
- No key, token or password was spoken.
- In the terminal tool window, nothing runs until you have read the full line.
Where do your words go?
JetBrains says: "When you use AI Assistant features, your request and relevant context are sent to an AI model." Models can be "provided through the JetBrains AI service, accessed from a third-party AI provider, or hosted locally".
| Route | Audio | Prompt text and context |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Dictation | Check Keyboard settings, as Apple says | To the model you selected |
| SuprFlow | Recognised on the Mac | To the model you selected |
A locally hosted model keeps the prompt on your machine if it runs there; otherwise it goes to the provider. A spoken prompt can carry proprietary code context either way. Follow your employer's policy.
Questions people ask
Is there voice dictation in IntelliJ IDEA?
Not built in, according to JetBrains' AI Assistant documentation as of 1 October 2026. Use Apple Dictation or a dictation app.
Can I dictate to the AI Assistant in PyCharm?
Yes. Click in the AI Chat input and use Apple Dictation or a push-to-talk app, then review and send.
Does the Windsurf plugin's voice input still work in JetBrains?
Its documentation says the plugin is in maintenance mode and Cascade is being deprecated, so newer IDE releases may break it.
Can I dictate commit messages in a JetBrains IDE?
Yes. Click in the commit message box and dictate. Check ticket numbers and names before committing.
