Voice dictation in the Zed editor on a Mac: dictate agent prompts

How to dictate prompts to Zed's Agent Panel on a Mac with Apple Dictation or a push-to-talk app, why Enter submits, and Zed's tool permissions and voice chat.

Zed has no speech-to-text for its Agent Panel, so on a Mac you dictate with Apple Dictation or a system-wide push-to-talk app: click in the Agent Panel's message editor, start dictation, speak, and read the prompt. Zed's docs say you "press enter to submit", so anything that sends Return will send your prompt. Zed's microphone feature is voice chat with collaborators, which is a different thing.

Does Zed have built-in voice input?

Not for dictation. Zed's documentation does not describe built-in voice input for the editor or the Agent Panel as of 1 October 2026.

What Zed does have is voice chat in Channels, its rooms for working with other people. Zed says: "When joining a channel, Zed automatically shares your microphone with other users in the call, if your OS allows it. To start muted, use the mute_on_join setting." That matters if you dictate: in a channel call with your microphone open, colleagues hear every prompt you speak. Mute first.

How do you dictate an Agent Panel prompt with Apple Dictation?

Apple's Dictation guide for macOS 27 says you can "speak to enter text anywhere you can type it".

  1. Turn Dictation on in System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation. On another macOS version, search System Settings for "Dictation".
  2. Open the Agent Panel and click in the message editor.
  3. Press the Microphone key or your Dictation shortcut, speak, and stop.
  4. Add file or symbol context by hand, read the prompt, then press Enter.

Two Apple details to know. Dictation stops after 30 seconds without speech. And Apple says the spoken "new line" command is "equivalent to pressing the Return key once", so in Zed's message editor it can submit a half-finished prompt. Do not say it there. Setup is in how to use voice to text on a Mac; keys are in the Mac dictation shortcut guide.

If a dictated prompt goes wrong, Zed says "any message that you send to the model is editable": click its card, fix it and resubmit.

Does dictation work with Claude Code, Codex or OpenCode inside Zed?

Yes, the same way. Zed's External Agents page lists ACP-integrated agents including Claude, Codex and OpenCode, which open as threads in the Agent Panel. You type, or dictate, into the same message editor. Each agent "owns its own authentication and billing". Zed notes some Agent Panel features, including checkpoints, "depend on the agent integration".

When does a push-to-talk app fit with Zed?

When you dictate into Zed, a terminal, a browser and chat apps and want one key for all of them. SuprFlow is one example. It is a menu-bar app for Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 14 or later. Hold the Fn key, speak, release, and it pastes the text at the cursor in the focused field. Speech recognition runs on the Mac after a one-time model download; see https://suprflow.app/requirements. Default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers. It costs $125 once (as of 1 October 2026), with no free tier or trial.

It should work wherever you can paste text; test it in the Agent Panel with a harmless prompt. If you use Zed's terminal, a multi-line paste goes to whatever owns that prompt; see voice to text in the Mac terminal. Occasional prompts? Apple Dictation is free and may be enough.

What is dictation good and bad at in Zed?

Good:

  • Explaining a task, a bug or a design choice in full sentences.
  • Constraints: "keep the public API", "don't touch the migrations".
  • Commit messages and code comments.

Needs a review pass, typing or a dictionary entry:

  • Rust, TypeScript or Python identifiers: parse_config, useEffect, HashMap.
  • File paths, crate and package names.
  • Symbols: ::, =>, &mut, brackets.

Describe the code in words and let the agent search, or type exact names after dictating. For names you say every day, see teaching SuprFlow names and acronyms and voice snippets on a Mac.

What should you check before pressing Enter?

Zed's agent can act. Its Tool Permissions page says you can auto-approve, auto-deny or "always confirm" tool actions with patterns; the fallback when no pattern matches is "confirm" by default. If you have set "default": "allow", a misheard instruction can reach your files and terminal without a prompt.

  • Identifiers, paths and flags are exact.
  • Negations survived: "don't", "without", "only".
  • Deletion, force-push, migration or production steps were typed, not spoken.
  • No key, token or password was spoken.
  • You are not in a channel call with your microphone on.
  • Your tool permission default suits the task. Zed's own example keeps sudo commands on "always confirm".

If an edit goes wrong, Zed shows a Restore Checkpoint button that returns "your code base to the state it was in prior to that message", where the agent integration supports it.

Where do your words go?

Zed's AI Privacy page says "Zed does not retain your prompts or code context by default", and lists who handles each request path: Zed-hosted models, your own provider keys, external agents "under its own terms", or a local server for local models.

Questions people ask

Does Zed have voice dictation?

No built-in dictation, according to Zed's documentation as of 1 October 2026. Use Apple Dictation or a dictation app in the Agent Panel.

What is the microphone icon in Zed for?

Voice chat in collaboration channels. Zed says it shares your microphone with others in the call when you join, if macOS allows it.

Why did my dictated prompt send before I finished?

Zed submits on Enter, and Apple's "new line" command equals pressing Return. Avoid that command in the message editor.

Can I dictate to Claude Code running in Zed?

Yes. Claude runs as an external agent thread in the Agent Panel; dictate into its message editor like any other.
