When MacWhisper dictation is not typing into an app, MacWhisper's own help page gives the most likely cause: the app checks that you have an active text field selected, and some apps do not expose their text fields in the standard macOS way. The fix it documents is Settings → Advanced → Allow dictation everywhere, plus telling [email protected] which app it was. If you cannot find dictation at all, check which version you have: MacWhisper says dictation is only in the version sold on macwhisper.com, not the Mac App Store version.
MacWhisper's help centre is shorter than some vendors'. Everything in the table below comes from its own articles, checked 3 October 2026. Where its pages are silent, this guide says so rather than guessing.
Which symptom matches yours?
| Symptom | Cause MacWhisper gives | Fix MacWhisper gives |
|---|---|---|
| Dictation works in most apps but not one | MacWhisper could not detect the text field in an app that does not follow standard macOS practices | Turn on Allow dictation everywhere in Settings → Advanced; email [email protected] naming the app (text field article) |
| No Dictation option in the app | You have the Mac App Store edition (Whisper Transcription), which does not include dictation | Dictation is only in MacWhisper from macwhisper.com (dictation guide; edition comparison) |
| The shortcut does nothing | Dictation not set up yet | Enable it from Dictation on the home screen (MacWhisper recommends this because it guides setup) or in Settings → Dictation, and set the keyboard shortcut there |
| AI dictation prompts do not run | AI prompts need a Pro licence and your own AI provider key with a payment method | Add your API key in the app and confirm billing with the provider (dictation guide) |
| WhisperKit models missing | WhisperKit runs only on Apple Silicon (M-series) Macs | Use another engine on an Intel Mac (WhisperKit article) |
| First use of a new model is slow | The model downloads, then prepares on first load, which can take a few minutes for larger models | Wait once; MacWhisper says later loads are very fast |
| "Transcription finished without any text." | Audio too short, or a decoding problem | Toggle Downmix to Mono in Settings → Advanced; then contact support (no-text article) |
| "Your license is disabled" | Licence activated on too many devices (soft limit of 3 personal devices) | On an old Mac, use Settings → Pro → Remove license; contact support if unexpected (licensing article) |
| "Pay Wall Error: Resource unavailable at url" (App Store edition) | The Mac cannot reach the Mac App Store; MacWhisper calls it a macOS bug | Restart the Mac; then contact support (pay wall article) |
| Lost licence key | The key is in your purchase email | Search your email for a Gumroad receipt, check gumroad.com/library, then email support with your purchase email and date (lost key article) |
What about microphone and Accessibility permissions?
MacWhisper's help articles, as of 3 October 2026, do not list which macOS permissions its dictation feature needs. The one place they name permissions is meeting recording, which MacWhisper's meeting recording article says needs Screen Recording and Microphone permission.
What Apple documents, for macOS 27, is where these permissions live:
- Choose Apple menu → System Settings, then Privacy & Security.
- Click Microphone and check whether MacWhisper is listed and turned on. Apple's microphone access page explains the switch for each app.
- Click Accessibility and do the same. Apple's Accessibility access page explains the list and advises granting access only to apps you know and trust.
If MacWhisper is listed and switched off in either place, switching it on is a reasonable step. If the dictation microphone fails in other apps as well, the problem is the Mac's input, not MacWhisper; Mac Dictation not working covers Apple's own input checks.
What does MacWhisper need online?
MacWhisper's privacy article says transcription is performed locally by default, after the app downloads a model such as Whisper or Parakeet. These features use the internet:
- Cloud transcription providers (such as Groq, ElevenLabs or Deepgram) receive the audio.
- DeepL translation receives the transcription.
- AI prompts send the transcription to the AI provider you chose, unless you use a local provider such as Ollama or LM Studio.
So if dictation stops working offline, check whether you switched to a cloud model or an AI prompt. A local model needs to be downloaded once first. MacWhisper's MDM article also says a deployed licence is validated on launch.
Who do you contact?
MacWhisper does not link a public status page in its help centre. For anything not covered above, email [email protected] with the app you were dictating into, your macOS version and the error text.
If you want to try something else
Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 3 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.
MacWhisper is mainly a transcription app for files and meetings, with dictation as one feature. If dictation is the part you use most:
- Apple Dictation is free and built in. How to use voice to text on a Mac shows how.
- SuprFlow is a dictation-only Mac app that runs speech recognition on the Mac with an on-device model and pastes at the cursor. It costs $125 for lifetime access on up to five Macs you own, with a 7-day refund on a first purchase and no free trial. It is the wrong choice if you need file transcription, meeting recording or translation, which MacWhisper has and SuprFlow does not. SuprFlow vs MacWhisper compares them.
Questions people ask
Why is MacWhisper dictation not typing in one app?
MacWhisper says it checks for an active text field, and some apps that do not follow standard macOS practices hide it. Turn on Allow dictation everywhere in Settings → Advanced and tell support which app it was.
Why can't I find dictation in MacWhisper?
MacWhisper says dictation is only in the version sold on macwhisper.com. The Mac App Store edition, Whisper Transcription, does not include it because of App Store restrictions.
Does MacWhisper work offline?
Transcription with a downloaded local model runs on the Mac, according to MacWhisper. Cloud transcription, DeepL translation and AI prompts with a cloud provider need the internet.
Why does MacWhisper say my licence is disabled?
MacWhisper says this usually means the key was activated on too many devices; the personal licence has a soft limit of three. Remove the licence from a Mac you no longer use under Settings → Pro.
