Dictate posts and captions for X, Instagram and TikTok on a Mac

How to dictate an X post or an Instagram or TikTok caption on a Mac, why voice-over and video captions are not dictation, and what to check before you post.

To dictate a post on X or a caption for Instagram or TikTok on a Mac, open the site in your browser, click into the post or caption box, start Apple's built-in Dictation with the Microphone key or your Dictation shortcut, and speak. Read it, fix names and hashtags by hand, then post. Drafting in Notes first and pasting makes it easier to edit and count characters. Watch the vocabulary: on these apps, "captions" can mean subtitles on a video, and "voice" features usually add audio to a video. Neither types your post.

Do X, Instagram or TikTok have built-in dictation on the web?

Not that their help pages describe for writing posts or captions as of 3 October 2026.

  • Instagram. The computer steps in Add a caption before sharing your post are: click Create, then Post, choose a photo or video, click Next twice, click Write a caption…, then Share. No voice input is mentioned. Instagram's closed captions for reels are subtitles, and Instagram says that feature "isn't available on computers."
  • X. X's developer guide to counting characters explains how a post's length is measured. It does not describe voice input.
  • TikTok. Check TikTok Support for its current web upload and caption tools. Features that read text aloud or add subtitles to a video are not dictation of your caption.

So on a Mac, dictation for these platforms means system dictation or a dictation app typing into the browser's text box.

How long can a post or caption be?

PlatformWhat the source says
X"Posts on X can contain up to 280 characters." Emoji and Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as 2, and every link counts as 23 (Counting characters). If your account shows a different limit, follow what X shows you
InstagramThe computer caption steps do not state a limit
TikTokCheck the caption box and TikTok Support for the current limit

Spoken drafts run long. If you dictate a thought and it overflows, cut it in Notes before you paste.

How do you dictate a post with Apple Dictation?

Apple's Dictation guide for macOS 27 says "you can speak to enter text anywhere you can type it."

  1. Turn on Dictation once in System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation. On older macOS versions the wording may differ.
  2. Open x.com, instagram.com or tiktok.com in Safari or Chrome and start a post.
  3. Click into the post or caption box so the cursor is blinking.
  4. Press the Microphone key or your Dictation shortcut and speak. Apple says you can say an emoji's name, such as "heart emoji", to insert it.
  5. Stop with the same key. Type @handles and #hashtags by hand.
  6. Read it once more, then post.

Setup is in How to use voice to text on a Mac. See the Mac dictation shortcut guide, Mac dictation commands and Mac Dictation not working.

When is a push-to-talk dictation app worth it?

If you write posts, captions, replies and DMs across several platforms every day, a hold-to-talk key that works the same in every browser tab and app is the reason to try one. A personal dictionary helps with brand names, product names and handles that general speech recognition spells wrong.

SuprFlow is one example. It is a menu-bar app for Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 14 or later. Hold the Fn key, speak, release, and it pastes the text into whichever text field has focus. Speech recognition runs on the Mac with an on-device model; optional cloud formatting sends transcript text, not audio, to the provider you pick. Default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers. It costs $125 for lifetime access on up to 5 Macs you own, with no subscription and a 7-day refund on a first purchase (as of 3 October 2026).

Because it pastes at the cursor, it should work in an ordinary text field; test it in each site's post box with a harmless sentence, and do not post the test. We have not run a controlled benchmark against Apple Dictation. If you post a few times a week, Apple's free Dictation is enough. See also Dictate in a browser form.

What goes wrong when dictating posts?

  • Return may post or break lines. Behaviour differs by site. Apple says the spoken "new line" is "equivalent to pressing the Return key once", so say it only where Return adds a line.
  • Hashtags and handles. Dictation may type "hashtag" or "at" as words, or split a tag into two. Type them by hand.
  • Character counts. On X, emoji count as 2 characters and links as 23. A dictated emoji uses more of the limit than it looks.
  • Wrong account. If you manage several accounts, check which one is signed in before you post.
  • Silence. Apple says Dictation stops after 30 seconds without speech.

What should you check before you post?

  • The account you are posting from.
  • Brand, product and people's names, spelled exactly.
  • Handles and hashtags, typed and selected from suggestions.
  • Prices, dates and claims you could be held to.
  • Words that change meaning when misheard, and every "not".
  • That the post fits the limit without cutting the last sentence.

On privacy: once shared, a caption stays with the post on the platform. Instagram lets you change it later with Options → Edit, where you can "edit, delete or add a caption" (Add, edit or delete the caption). See where dictated text goes after insertion.
