To dictate a meeting chat message in Zoom or Google Meet on a Mac, open the chat panel, click into the message box, start Apple's built-in Dictation with the Microphone key or your Dictation shortcut, and speak. Then read it before you press Return. The catch is your microphone: unless you are muted in the meeting, everyone hears you dictate. FaceTime on a Mac has no chat box at all, so text the person in Messages instead. Live captions and transcripts in all three apps turn the meeting's speech into text on screen; they do not type your chat message.

What do Zoom, Meet and FaceTime document?
| App | Chat box | Voice features that are not dictation |
|---|---|---|
| Zoom | During a meeting, click Chat (Saving in-meeting chat). In Zoom's team chat, "Enter your message, then press the Enter key or click the send icon" (Getting started with Zoom Chat) | Record voice attaches an audio message from the More options in the compose box |
| Google Meet | Click Chat at the bottom right, enter a message, click Send (Send chat messages) | Live captions show "subtitles as everyone speaks" and are "turned on only for you" |
| FaceTime | None. The FaceTime for Mac guide (macOS 27) has no article on in-call chat or messages | Live Captions transcribe the conversation on screen, on Macs with Apple silicon |
None of the three vendors' help pages describes a dictation feature for typing a chat message as of 3 October 2026. Zoom's captions and transcripts are also separate features; check Zoom Support for your plan.
Apple adds a caution about Live Captions worth repeating for any meeting captions: their accuracy "may vary and should not be relied upon in high-risk or emergency situations."
How do you dictate a meeting chat message with Apple Dictation?
Apple's Dictation guide for macOS 27 says "you can speak to enter text anywhere you can type it."
- Turn on Dictation once in System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation. On older macOS versions the wording may differ.
- Mute yourself in the meeting. Dictation uses your microphone, and the meeting hears an unmuted one.
- Open the chat panel and click into the message box.
- Press the Microphone key or your Dictation shortcut, and speak.
- Stop with the Microphone key or the shortcut. Read the message, check who it goes to, then press Return or click Send.
- Unmute when you want to speak to the meeting again.
For FaceTime, open Messages and dictate there; see How to dictate a text in Messages on a Mac.
Setup is in How to use voice to text on a Mac. See the Mac dictation shortcut guide, Mac dictation commands and Mac Dictation not working.
When is a push-to-talk dictation app worth it?
If you spend the day in calls and answer chat, Slack and email between them, a hold-to-talk key that works the same in every app is the reason to try one. In meetings it still uses your microphone, so the mute rule applies.
SuprFlow is one example. It is a menu-bar app for Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 14 or later. Hold the Fn key, speak, release, and it pastes the text into whichever text field has focus. Speech recognition runs on the Mac with an on-device model; optional cloud formatting sends transcript text, not audio, to the provider you pick. Default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers. It costs $125 for lifetime access on up to 5 Macs you own, with no subscription and a 7-day refund on a first purchase (as of 3 October 2026).
Because it pastes at the cursor, it should work in an ordinary text field; test it in a meeting chat with only yourself in the call, using a harmless sentence. It has no meeting recorder and does not transcribe calls; use the meeting app's own captions or transcripts for that. We have not run a controlled benchmark against Apple Dictation.
Which route should you use?
| Meeting app's own features | Apple Dictation | System-wide app (SuprFlow as the example) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Types a chat message | Not documented | Yes | Should work; test first |
| Captions of the meeting | Yes: Meet live captions, FaceTime Live Captions | No | No |
| Records or transcribes the meeting | Depends on app and plan | No | No |
| Cost | Included, depending on plan | Free with macOS | $125 once |
| Best for | Following what is said | Occasional chat messages | Many messages across apps |
What goes wrong when dictating into meeting chat?
- The meeting hears you. An unmuted microphone sends your dictation to everyone. Mute first.
- Return sends. Zoom says Enter sends a message in Zoom's team chat; assume a meeting chat box does the same until you have checked. Apple says "new line" is "equivalent to pressing the Return key once", so saying it can post half a message.
- Wrong audience. Google says Meet chat messages "are visible to everyone in the call and internal guests on the calendar invite, even if they're not in the call." Check whether you are messaging everyone or one person.
- Two microphones. If the meeting uses a headset and Dictation uses the built-in microphone, check Microphone source in Keyboard settings.
- Silence. Apple says Dictation stops after 30 seconds without speech.
What should you check before you send?
- Who the message goes to: everyone or one person.
- Names, numbers, links and dates.
- Every "not" and "no".
- Nothing you would not want saved with the meeting.
- That you are muted, or meant to be unmuted.
On privacy: chat outlives the meeting more often than people expect. Google says "When meetings are recorded the chat conversation log is also saved," and continuous meeting chat syncs to Google Chat. Zoom lets you save meeting chat to your computer, and licensed users can save it to the Zoom Cloud with a cloud recording (Saving in-meeting chat). See where dictated text goes after insertion.
