Neither Microsoft nor Google documents a voice typing button for Excel for Mac or Google Sheets. To dictate in Excel or Sheets on a Mac, double-click a cell (or click in the formula bar), start Apple's built-in Dictation with the Microphone key or your shortcut, speak, and stop Dictation before you press Return. Spreadsheets have two traps that documents do not: Return finishes the cell and moves on, and Escape can cancel what you just entered.

Does Excel have a Dictate button on a Mac?
Microsoft's support pages do not describe one as of 1 October 2026. Microsoft's Dictate in Microsoft 365 page links to dictation articles for Word, Outlook, OneNote and PowerPoint, and its "Applies To" list names Word and PowerPoint for Mac. There is no Excel article. A general note on the same page says "these steps apply to the desktop versions of Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint," but no Excel steps follow. If you see a Dictate button in your copy of Excel, it is worth trying; Microsoft's dictation needs "a microphone and reliable internet connection."
Does Google Sheets have voice typing?
No. Google's Type & edit with your voice page says voice typing works in "Google Docs and your speaker notes and captions in Google Slides." Sheets is not listed, and Google's Sheets keyboard shortcuts page lists no voice typing shortcut. If you want Google's own voice typing for long text, dictate it in a Google Doc and paste it into the sheet. See voice typing in Google Docs on a Mac.
How do you dictate into a cell with Apple Dictation?
Apple's Dictation guide for macOS 27 says "you can speak to enter text anywhere you can type it." In a spreadsheet, "where you can type" means a cell in edit mode or the formula bar.
- Turn on Dictation once in System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation. On older macOS versions the wording may differ.
- Select the cell. In Excel, put it into edit mode with F2 or Control-U, which Microsoft's Excel keyboard shortcuts (macOS tab) list as "Edit the selected cell" and "Edit the active cell." In either app you can also double-click the cell or click in the formula bar.
- Press the Microphone key if your keyboard has one, or your Dictation shortcut, and speak.
- Stop Dictation with the same key or shortcut.
- Check the text, then press Return to commit the cell.
Setup is in How to use voice to text on a Mac. See the Mac dictation shortcut guide, Mac dictation commands and Mac Dictation not working.
Dictation is best for text: comments, notes, descriptions, names. For numbers and formulas, typing is usually faster and safer, because a single misheard digit changes a total.
When is a push-to-talk dictation app worth it?
If you fill a long column of notes, starting and stopping Dictation for every cell adds up. A hold-to-talk app makes each cell one key press: hold, speak, release.
SuprFlow is one example. It is a menu-bar app for Apple Silicon Macs on macOS 14 or later. Hold the Fn key, speak, release, and it pastes the text into whichever text field has focus. Speech recognition runs on the Mac after a one-time model download; see https://suprflow.app/requirements. Default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers. It costs $125 once (as of 1 October 2026), with no free tier or trial.
Because it pastes at the cursor, it should work in an ordinary text field; test it in a scratch workbook with a harmless sentence first. Check whether it inserts into a cell you have only selected or only into one in edit mode, and use edit mode to be safe. Number cleanup may change how a figure is written, so check numbers before you rely on them. We have not run a controlled benchmark against Apple Dictation. For an occasional note in a cell, Apple's free Dictation is enough.
Which route should you use?
| Excel or Sheets built-in | Apple Dictation | System-wide app (SuprFlow as the example) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Voice typing in cells | Not documented for Excel for Mac or Sheets | Yes, in edit mode or the formula bar | Should work; test first |
| Cost | Not applicable | Free with macOS | $125 once |
| Start | Not applicable | Microphone key or shortcut | Hold Fn, release to insert |
| Works in Excel and Sheets | Not applicable | Yes | Should work; test first |
| Best for | Not applicable | Occasional notes in cells | Many cells of text a day |
What goes wrong when dictating in a spreadsheet?
- Return moves you on. Microsoft lists Return as "Complete a cell entry and move forward in the selection." Apple's guide says the spoken command "new line" is "equivalent to pressing the Return key once." So saying "new line" in a cell commits it and moves down, and the rest of your sentence lands in the next cell.
- Line breaks inside a cell. In Excel for Mac, Microsoft lists Option-Return or Control-Option-Return to "start a new line in the same cell." Press it yourself between dictated lines. In Google Sheets, press ⌘ + / to see the shortcuts for your keyboard.
- Escape cancels. Apple's guide says to press Escape to stop Dictation, but Microsoft lists Esc as "Cancel a cell entry." Stop Dictation with the Microphone key or your shortcut instead.
- Selected is not editing. If a cell is only selected, new text may replace what is already there. Enter edit mode first if you want to add to it.
- Numbers become text, or the wrong number. Dictated figures may arrive with words, commas or currency symbols the sheet does not treat as numbers. Type figures.
- Silence. Apple says Dictation stops after 30 seconds without speech.
What should you check before you share the sheet?
- That each note landed in the right row and column.
- That no text spilled into the cell below.
- Names, codes and IDs, letter by letter.
- Any figures that were dictated rather than typed, against the source.
- Formulas next to the cells you edited still calculate.
- Every "not" and "no" in comments.
On privacy: the text you dictate is saved in the workbook like anything you type. For Google Sheets, Google's How to use Google Drive page says My Drive holds the "Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Forms you create." An Excel workbook is stored wherever you save it. See where dictated text goes after insertion.
Questions people ask
Is there voice typing in Excel for Mac?
Microsoft's dictation articles cover Word, Outlook, OneNote and PowerPoint, not Excel. Apple Dictation types into Excel cells on a Mac.
Can I use Google Docs voice typing in Google Sheets?
No. Google lists Docs and Slides speaker notes only. Dictate in a Doc and paste, or use Apple Dictation in the cell.
Why does my dictated sentence end up in two cells?
Saying "new line" acts like pressing Return, which commits the cell and moves down. Use Option-Return in Excel for a line break inside the cell.
Can I dictate formulas?
You can, but spoken symbols and cell references are easy to mishear. Typing formulas is more reliable.
