BetterDictation is a one-time purchase with an optional subscription on top. As of 3 October 2026, its pricing lists Basic at $39 once for one Mac, Flex at $49 once for three Macs and Studio at $149 once for ten, each with "Lifetime basic transcription". Pro, the optional AI cleanup add-on, costs $2 a month billed annually, and Flex and Studio include three free months of it. There is no free tier; a 14-day money-back guarantee takes the place of a trial.
Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 3 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.
What does each BetterDictation plan cost?
Prices in USD as of 3 October 2026, from the pricing section of BetterDictation's home page.
| Plan | Price | Macs | What BetterDictation lists |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $39 once | 1 | "Single device license", "Lifetime basic transcription", "Regular updates" |
| Flex | $49 once | 3 | "3 device license", lifetime basic transcription, 3 free months of Pro, "then $2/mo for Pro billed annually" |
| Studio | $149 once | 10 | "10 device license", lifetime basic transcription, "Dedicated account manager", 3 free months of Pro, "then $2/mo/device for Pro billed annually" |
| Enterprise | Contact sales | Unlimited | "Unlimited devices, volume discounts, custom onboarding and bespoke feature development" |
| Pro add-on | $2 a month, billed annually | Per licence; per device on Studio | Stammer correction, automatic formatting, grammar correction, "AI Post-processing, using OpenAI" |
The pricing section is headed "Pay once. Talk forever." and says "No subscription for the app — your license is yours for life, updates included." The install page is direct about the rest: "BetterDictation is a paid product. You'll need to purchase a license key in order to install the app."
All plans need an Apple Silicon Mac. The FAQ says BetterDictation "isn't supported on Intel Macs" and requires M1 or newer, and its user guide says to run macOS Sonoma 14.4 or later. There is no Windows version yet; the FAQ answers "It's coming."
What do you get without Pro, and what does Pro add?
Without Pro you get local transcription. The home page says it is "Powered by OpenAI's Whisper, running entirely on Apple's Neural Engine", its FAQ names the whisper-large-v3-turbo model, and it says BetterDictation "operates fully offline, processing voice-to-text locally on your device". It supports push-to-talk and toggle modes, and the user guide describes model presets you cycle with Control-Shift-L to switch languages.
Pro adds an AI pass after transcription. The Pro page lists stammer correction, automatic formatting and grammar improvements, and says Pro "automatically removes stammers, filler words, and repeated phrases". The user guide says Pro "leverages OpenAI's advanced language models" and that you can edit the prompt.
That step leaves your Mac. BetterDictation's privacy policy, effective January 2025, says that with Pro "the text transcription is then sent to OpenAI's API for post-processing", and "your transcribed text (but not your audio) will be processed through OpenAI's services", subject to OpenAI's terms. The FAQ adds that Pro features need internet access. The pages we read do not offer another AI provider or a local model for Pro. Is BetterDictation safe? covers what else the policy says.
What are the refund and cancellation terms?
The FAQ says: "If after purchase you find that the software doesn't work for you", email [email protected] "to request a refund within 14 days of purchase." The pricing section repeats "14-day money-back guarantee".
On Pro, the FAQ says that if you take the free months on Flex and decide Pro is not for you, "you can cancel your subscription at any time and keep your lifetime purchase of the Basic BetterDictation software." We did not find a separate terms of service page describing licence transfers between Macs, so ask support if that matters to you.
How much does BetterDictation cost over one, two and three years?
List prices as of 3 October 2026, USD, before tax, assuming prices do not change. Pro is $24 a year. For Flex, we assume the first Pro charge comes after the three free months and then yearly; check the date at checkout.
| Option | Macs | Year 1 | After 2 years | After 3 years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic, no Pro | 1 | $39 | $39 | $39 |
| Basic + Pro | 1 | $63 | $87 | $111 |
| Flex, Pro cancelled after free months | 3 | $49 | $49 | $49 |
| Flex + Pro | 3 | $73 | $97 | $121 |
| Studio, no Pro | 10 | $149 | $149 | $149 |
| VoiceInk Solo | 1 | $25 | $25 | $25 |
| SuprFlow | Up to 5 you own | $125 | $125 | $125 |
How to read it honestly:
- Without Pro, BetterDictation never costs more than its sticker price. $39 for one Mac is far below SuprFlow's $125.
- With Pro, the break-even with SuprFlow is in year four. Basic plus Pro reaches $111 after three years; the fourth annual payment takes it to $135. On Flex with Pro, the fourth charge takes it past $125.
- The rows are not the same product. Pro sends text to OpenAI to remove filler words, fix grammar and format lists. SuprFlow's Default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers, and its optional cloud formatting sends transcript text, not audio, to a provider you pick, billed by that provider. If you want filler removal and rewriting, compare the outputs, not just the prices.
- SuprFlow has the shorter refund window and no trial: a 7-day refund on a first purchase, against BetterDictation's 14 days.
We have not run a controlled benchmark of either app, so this page compares price and terms only. SuprFlow vs BetterDictation compares the apps.
Which plan should you buy?
Basic if you dictate on one Mac and plain local transcription is enough. It is one of the cheaper paid local dictation apps we have checked.
Flex if you have two or three Macs, or want to try Pro for three months without a separate payment. It costs $10 more than Basic.
Studio if you need more than five Macs. Remember that Pro is priced per device on this plan.
Basic plus Pro if you want filler words removed and lists formatted, and you are comfortable with transcript text going to OpenAI.
Nothing yet if you have an Intel Mac or need Windows. BetterDictation alternatives covers those cases.
How do you test it within the refund window?
There is no trial, so test in the first few days.
- Install, enter the licence key, and grant Microphone and Accessibility.
- Hold Control-V (the default the install page shows) and dictate this made-up passage into your mail app: "Hi Leopold, the deposit is 1,920 dollars, not 1,290. Pickup is Monday the 3rd, sorry, Tuesday the 4th. Copy Ms. Okafor-Brandt."
- Check the surname, both amounts and the corrected date.
- Turn Wi-Fi off and repeat; transcription without Pro should still work.
- If you have Pro months, dictate the same passage with Pro on and compare. Keep Pro only if the cleaned version saves you edits.
