Dictation works the same way on every Mac: turn it on in System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation, click where you want the text, and press the Dictation key or shortcut. What differs by model is the microphone. A MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, MacBook Neo or iMac has microphones built in, so you can dictate straight away. A Mac mini or Mac Studio has no built-in microphone in Apple's current tech specs, so you need an external microphone, a headset, a display with a microphone, or your iPhone before dictation can hear you.
Model details below come from Apple's tech specs pages for the current models, opened on 1 October 2026, and from the Mac User Guide for macOS 27. If you have an older model, Apple's Identify the model of your Apple device page leads to each model's own specs.
Which Macs have a built-in microphone?
| Current model (Apple's specs page) | Built-in microphone | Keyboard |
|---|---|---|
| MacBook Air (M5) | "Three-mic array with directional beamforming" | Built in, with function keys and Touch ID |
| MacBook Pro (M5, M5 Pro, M5 Max) | "Studio-quality three-mic array with high signal-to-noise ratio and directional beamforming" | Built in, with function keys and Touch ID |
| MacBook Neo (A18 Pro) | "Dual-mic array with directional beamforming" | Built in, with function keys |
| iMac (M4) | "Studio-quality three-mic array with high signal-to-noise ratio and directional beamforming" | Magic Keyboard in the box |
| Mac mini (M6) | None listed. Audio: built-in speaker and a 3.5 mm headphone jack | Not in the box; use your own |
| Mac Studio (M5 Max, M5 Ultra) | None listed. Audio: built-in speaker and a 3.5 mm headphone jack | Not in the box; use your own |
The laptops' specs also list "Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum microphone modes for enhanced voice clarity in audio and video calls." Apple describes those modes for calls; the pages we read do not say they apply to Dictation.
How do you dictate on a Mac mini or Mac Studio?
Connect a microphone first. Apple's sound input page lists the options: "your computer's internal microphone, your display's microphone (if it has one), your iPhone microphone, or an external microphone plugged into your computer's sound port." On a Mac mini or Mac Studio that means:
- A wired headset or external microphone, for example in the 3.5 mm audio jack (on the front of the current Mac mini, per Apple's Mac mini tour).
- A display with a built-in microphone. Apple says it is listed in Sound settings as "[Mac model] Microphone".
- Your iPhone. Apple's page links this option to its guide on using iPhone as a webcam.
- A Bluetooth headset. It works, with trade-offs explained in Why Bluetooth headsets hurt dictation quality.
Then:
- Choose Apple menu → System Settings → Sound, click Input, and select the microphone. Speak and watch the level; drag the input volume slider if it barely moves.
- Choose System Settings → Keyboard, go to Dictation, turn it on and click Enable.
- In Microphone source, choose the same microphone. Apple says Automatic listens to "the device you're most likely to use for Dictation."
- Click in a note and press the Dictation key or shortcut.
Apple's Dictation troubleshooting page states the requirement directly: "If your Mac doesn't have an internal microphone, make sure an external microphone is connected to your Mac and selected in Sound or Keyboard settings."
If you use a headset with an external display, Apple's audio device page says choosing the display's microphone may revert to the headset while it is plugged in. Unplug the headset first.
Where is the Dictation key?
On Apple's Magic Keyboard it is F5. Apple's keyboard pages for MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac mini all describe Dictation/Siri (F5) the same way: "Press to activate Dictation… To activate Siri, press and hold, then immediately speak your request."
So: tap for Dictation, hold for Siri. If Siri keeps opening, you are holding the key too long. Siri vs Dictation on a Mac explains the difference.
With a keyboard that has no Microphone key, such as a third-party or Windows keyboard on a Mac mini or Mac Studio:
- Use Fn-D, which Apple's Mac keyboard shortcuts article lists as "Start or stop dictation."
- Or set your own under Keyboard → Dictation → Shortcut → Customize.
- Or choose Edit → Start Dictation in the app's menu bar.
Apple's shortcuts article also notes that on Windows keyboards you press Alt in place of Option. The Mac dictation shortcut guide covers the options.
Where is the microphone on a MacBook?
Apple's MacBook Air tour shows the microphones in the top view, next to the speakers. Apple's troubleshooting advice is to keep the microphone "not obstructed by objects, such as clothing or your body," and to check your Mac's guide to find it.
Which Macs get Apple's new advanced Dictation?
Apple's 14 September 2026 announcement says the more advanced Dictation is available on a "Mac (M3) or later with at least 12GB of unified memory," and the feature availability page lists it for English only. Against the current specs pages:
| Current model | Chip and base memory, per Apple | Meets Apple's stated requirement? |
|---|---|---|
| MacBook Air | M5, 16GB | Yes |
| MacBook Pro | M5 family, 16GB or more | Yes |
| iMac | M4, 16GB | Yes |
| Mac mini | M6, 16GB or more | Yes |
| Mac Studio | M5 Max or M5 Ultra, 36GB or more | Yes |
| MacBook Neo | A18 Pro, 8GB | No. It supports Apple Intelligence but is not an M3-or-later Mac with 12GB |
For an older Mac, choose Apple menu → About This Mac and read the chip and memory. M1 and M2 Macs, and Macs with less than 12GB of memory, keep the earlier Dictation. Apple Intelligence Dictation on a Mac has a 10-minute test to see whether it suits you.
Does a better microphone help?
Apple's troubleshooting list suggests that in "a noisy environment or a room with excessive echo, it may help to use a headset microphone." That applies to every model. We have not run a controlled comparison of microphones or Mac models and make no accuracy claim.
Does a dictation app need anything different on these Macs?
No. Any dictation app uses the same microphone input, so a Mac mini or Mac Studio still needs an external microphone. SuprFlow, which publishes this guide, requires an Apple Silicon Mac with macOS 14 or later, which covers every model in the tables above, including M1 and M2 Macs that do not get Apple's advanced Dictation. Hold Fn to dictate; on a keyboard without a Fn key, set a Custom Hotkey. It costs $125 once with no free tier, and Apple's Dictation is free. SuprFlow vs Apple Dictation covers when it is worth it.
Questions people ask
Can I use dictation on a Mac mini?
Yes, once a microphone is connected. Apple's specs list no built-in microphone, so use a headset, USB microphone, a display's microphone or your iPhone, and select it in Sound → Input and Keyboard → Dictation → Microphone source.
Does Mac Studio have a microphone?
Apple's Mac Studio specs list a built-in speaker and a headphone jack, and no microphone. Connect one before dictating.
What is the dictation key on a MacBook Air?
F5, the Dictation/Siri key. Press it to start Dictation; press and hold it for Siri. Fn-D also works.
Which microphone does MacBook dictation use?
The one in Keyboard → Dictation → Microphone source. On Automatic, Apple says the Mac picks the device you are most likely to use.
