Choose MacWhisper if your main job is turning recordings into text: interviews, lectures, meetings, podcasts and subtitles, with exports to formats such as .docx and .srt. Choose VoiceInk if your main job is dictating into other apps all day and you want an app whose source code is public. Both run speech models on your Mac by default and both sell a one-time licence (MacWhisper Pro at €64, VoiceInk from $25, as of 1 October 2026), so this comparison is about the job, not about local versus cloud. MacWhisper also has a free version with basic system-wide dictation, which is worth trying first if you need a little of both.
Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 1 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.
We have not run a controlled benchmark of either app. This page reports what each developer documents.
Who should pick which?
- You have audio or video files to transcribe: MacWhisper. VoiceInk's homepage describes live dictation and does not advertise file or meeting transcription.
- You want meetings recorded and transcribed without a bot: MacWhisper Pro.
- You dictate emails, messages and prompts many times a day: VoiceInk, which is built around that, or MacWhisper's dictation if it proves good enough.
- You want to read or build the code: VoiceInk (GPL v3). MacWhisper's pages do not describe it as open source.
- IT will deploy it to managed Macs: MacWhisper documents MDM keys and volume licence packs.
- You want the lowest price: MacWhisper Free costs nothing; VoiceInk's cheapest licence is $25.
How do MacWhisper and VoiceInk compare?
As of 1 October 2026. MacWhisper details are from macwhisper.com, its edition comparison, privacy article and dictation article. VoiceInk details are from its homepage, pricing page, privacy policy and GitHub repository.

What is the trap on each side?
MacWhisper has two editions. Its edition comparison says system-wide dictation and automatic meeting recording are in the direct download from macwhisper.com, not in the App Store edition, Whisper Transcription, which is sold by subscription and cannot take a Pro licence key. If you want dictation, get the direct download. MacWhisper's site also warns about scam websites that imitate it; buy only through its own Gumroad link or the App Store.
VoiceInk's two requirements disagree. The pricing page says macOS 14.4 or later on Apple Silicon; the README and build instructions say macOS 15.0 or later. On macOS 14, use the trial to check before paying. Building it free also has costs: BUILDING.md says local builds lack iCloud dictionary sync and automatic updates.
"Local" depends on settings in both. MacWhisper's privacy article names three features that send data out: cloud transcription, DeepL translation and cloud AI prompts. VoiceInk's privacy policy says transcription is local by default and cloud features run only after you add a key and select them. Is MacWhisper safe? and Is VoiceInk safe? list the other traffic each app's pages mention, such as licence checks and updates.

Choose MacWhisper if…
- Recordings, meetings or subtitles are the main job.
- You want speaker labels, batch jobs or exports to .docx, .pdf or .md.
- You need IT controls through MDM.
- Occasional dictation is enough, or you will test whether its dictation suits you.
Choose VoiceInk if…
- Dictating into other apps is the main job.
- You want public source code you can build.
- You want a dictionary, app-aware settings and AI writing modes in a dictation-first app.
- You are fine using your own API keys for any cloud step.
How do you test both in 15 minutes?
MacWhisper Free and VoiceInk's trial are enough. Use made-up content.
- Record a sample (2 minutes). Say: "Interview with Dr. Ilse Brandt on the 5th of June. The budget is 92,000 euros, not 29,000. Follow up with Joaquim on Thursday."
- Transcribe the file in MacWhisper (3 minutes). Check both names, both numbers and the dates.
- Dictate the same passage live in VoiceInk (3 minutes) into a blank email, with a local model selected and enhancement off.
- Dictate it again with MacWhisper's dictation (3 minutes) in the direct-download edition.
- Turn Wi-Fi off and repeat one step in each (2 minutes) to confirm your models are local.
- Decide by job (2 minutes). If step 2 is your real work, MacWhisper. If step 3 is, compare the corrections from steps 3 and 4.
A third option
If you only want live dictation on a Mac, SuprFlow does that single job: hold Fn, speak, release, and a local model's text is pasted at the cursor, with local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers. It costs $125 once for up to five Macs you own and needs Apple Silicon and macOS 14 or later. It is the wrong choice for file transcription, meeting recording or subtitles (MacWhisper), for public source code or the lowest price (VoiceInk), and it has no free version. SuprFlow vs MacWhisper and SuprFlow vs VoiceInk compare them.
