To turn off Dictation on a Mac, choose Apple menu → System Settings → Keyboard, go to Dictation, and turn it off. If Dictation keeps popping up when you did not ask for it, you may not need to turn it off at all: change the key that starts it. And if a dictation session keeps turning off while you are talking, Apple documents why. It stops when no speech is detected for 30 seconds, and when you press Escape, the Microphone key or the Dictation shortcut.
The steps below follow Apple's Mac User Guide for macOS 27. The macOS 15 edition reads the same. On macOS 12 and earlier, look in System Preferences → Keyboard → Dictation. On any version, type "Dictation" into the settings search field.
How do you turn off Dictation on a Mac?
- Choose Apple menu → System Settings.
- Click Keyboard in the sidebar. You may need to scroll down.
- Go to Dictation and turn it off.
That is the switch Apple describes in its Dictation guide. Turning Dictation on again later is the same switch, followed by Enable.
Turning off Dictation does not change whether Apple keeps audio recordings. That is a separate setting: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements → Improve Siri & Dictation.
Why does Dictation keep popping up?
Usually because the key that starts it is easy to press by accident. Find your trigger in the table.
| What sets it off | Why | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Pressing Fn (or Globe) twice | Press fn key to is set to Start Dictation | Keyboard → Press fn key to → Do Nothing (or another option) |
| A prompt asking you to enable Dictation | Same setting. Apple says Start Dictation may ask you "to enable dictation first" | Same fix |
| A two-key combination you hit while typing | The Shortcut menu under Dictation is set to it | Choose a different shortcut, or Customize one you will not press by accident |
| The Microphone key in the top row | Apple says press and release starts Dictation; press and hold activates Siri | Turn Dictation off if you never use it |
The Press fn key to setting has four choices, according to Apple's Keyboard settings page: Change Input Source, Show Emoji & Symbols, Start Dictation ("when you press the key twice"), and Do Nothing. On some keyboards the label shows a Globe symbol instead of "fn".
Apple adds a note that explains why this setting can change without you touching it. When you choose a Dictation shortcut, "the 'Press fn key to' or 'Press key to' option in Keyboard settings may change automatically." For example, choosing Press Fn (Function) Key Twice as the shortcut switches the Fn setting to Start Dictation (Press Fn Twice). So after changing the shortcut, check the Fn setting again.
If you want the Fn key for something else, such as another app's push-to-talk key, set Press fn key to to Do Nothing and give Dictation a different shortcut. The Mac dictation shortcut guide walks through the choices.
Why does Dictation keep turning off on my Mac?
This is the other common complaint: you start dictating and it stops on its own. These are the stop conditions Apple documents.
| What you notice | What Apple says | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| It stops after you pause to think | "Dictation stops automatically when no speech is detected for 30 seconds." | Start it again. Keep pauses under 30 seconds |
| It stops when you press a key | Escape, the Microphone key or the Dictation shortcut end it | Avoid those keys mid-sentence |
| On macOS 13 or earlier, it stops when you press Return | Apple's macOS 12 and 13 guides list "the Return key" and Done as ways to finish | Say "new line" instead of pressing Return |
| It pauses while you type | On Apple silicon, Apple says the cursor stops pulsing while you type "and then resumes after you stop typing" | Expected. Carry on speaking when you stop typing |
| It will not stay on at all | Voice Control may be on. "Standard macOS Dictation isn't available" while it is | Turn off Voice Control |
| It stops quickly, or never hears you | Apple's troubleshooting list points to the microphone, input volume and noise | See below |
Length is not the problem. Apple says "you can dictate text of any length without a timeout." What ends a session is silence, a key press, or something outside Dictation.
When it stops much sooner than 30 seconds
Work through Apple's If Dictation on Mac doesn't work as expected list:
- Under Keyboard → Dictation, check Microphone source is the microphone you are speaking into.
- Choose System Settings → Sound → Input, select that microphone and raise its input volume.
- Keep the microphone unobstructed, and "speak clearly at a volume that's not too quiet or too loud."
- In a noisy or echoing room, Apple suggests a headset microphone.
- Read the text below the Dictation switch. Apple says it tells you whether you need an internet connection.
If the selected microphone is not the one you are speaking into, Dictation detects no speech and stops after 30 seconds even though you are talking. Mac Dictation not working covers the remaining causes.
What happens to your dictation history when you turn it off?
Apple's Siri, Dictation & Privacy notice (dated 14 September 2026) says: "If you turn off both Siri and Dictation, the transcripts of your Siri and Dictation requests that are stored on your device and used to personalize your experience will be deleted." The notice gives the settings paths for iPhone, not Mac. The notice ties that deletion to turning off both, not Dictation alone.
Can't turn Dictation off, or the switch is missing?
On a Mac managed by an employer or school, the administrator can control Dictation. Apple's deployment restrictions for Mac include Modify Dictation ("Users can't use dictation on their device") and Force on-device-only dictation. If the setting is greyed out or missing, ask IT.
Turned it off because another app needs the Fn key?
That is a common reason. Some dictation apps use a held Fn key as push-to-talk, and macOS can claim the same key for Dictation or emoji. SuprFlow, which publishes this guide, is one: hold Fn to record, release to transcribe. You do not have to turn Apple Dictation off to use it; setting Press fn key to to Do Nothing and giving Dictation another shortcut is enough. Why does Fn open emoji instead of starting SuprFlow? has the details. Apple's Dictation is free and is enough for many people, so turn it off only if you do not use it.
Questions people ask
How do I stop Dictation from turning on by itself?
Set System Settings → Keyboard → Press fn key to to Do Nothing, and check the Dictation Shortcut menu is a combination you will not press by accident. Or turn Dictation off.
Why does Mac Dictation stop after a few seconds?
Apple says it stops after 30 seconds with no speech detected. If it stops sooner, or never seems to hear you, check the Microphone source and input volume.
Is there a time limit on Mac Dictation?
No. Apple says you can dictate text of any length without a timeout. Silence, a key press or Voice Control ends it.
Does turning off Dictation turn off Siri?
No. They are separate settings. Siri has its own section in System Settings.
