Dictate in Russian on a Mac: setup, punctuation and Cyrillic

Turn on Russian dictation (Диктовка) on a Mac, learn why you must say punctuation yourself, and see what Apple's Russian command page does and does not list.

To dictate in Russian on a Mac, open System Settings → Keyboard, go to Dictation (Диктовка on a Russian-language Mac), click Edit next to Languages, and select Russian (Russia). Start Dictation and pick Russian from the language shown next to the cursor. Apple lists Russian for on-device dictation but not for automatic punctuation, so you say commas and full stops yourself. You do not need a Cyrillic keyboard to dictate, though one helps when you correct words.

The steps come from Apple's Dictate messages and documents on Mac for macOS 27 Golden Gate, and its Russian edition, Диктовка сообщений и документов на Mac. If your screen differs, search System Settings for "Dictation" or «Диктовка».

How do you turn on Russian dictation?

  1. Choose Apple menu → System Settings, then click Keyboard («Клавиатура») in the sidebar.
  2. Go to Dictation («Диктовка») and turn it on.
  3. Click Edit («Правка») next to the language list and select Russian (Russia).
  4. Stay online while the Mac sets the language up. Apple's feature page says on-device dictation "Requires download of speech models."
  5. In a text field, start Dictation with the Microphone key, your Dictation shortcut, or Edit → Start Dictation, and check that the language next to the cursor is Russian.

To switch between Russian and English mid-document, click the language next to the cursor, or press the Globe key and choose. Apple's guide describes switching by hand. It does not describe automatic detection of a language change.

Which Russian dictation features does Apple list?

From Apple's macOS feature availability page for macOS Golden Gate, checked on 2 October 2026:

FeatureRussian (Russia)
DictationYes
On-device dictationYes
Auto-punctuationNot listed
Dictate emojiNot listed
More advanced Dictation (Apple Intelligence)Not listed; Apple lists it for English regions only

Apple lists one Russian variant, Russia. "Not listed" means absent from that feature's list on the day we checked. What that means in practice:

  • Say every punctuation mark. Apple's guide says Dictation inserts commas, periods and question marks automatically "in supported languages". Russian is not on that list.
  • Emoji by name may not work. The Russian guide gives «эмодзи сердце» as an example, but Russian is not on Apple's emoji dictation list. Test it, or use the emoji picker.
  • On-device is listed. Apple's guide says the text below the Dictation switch in Keyboard settings tells you whether general dictation is processed on your Mac. Is Mac Dictation private? explains that note.

How do you say punctuation in Russian?

This is where Apple's Russian pages disagree with each other.

The Russian Dictation guide tells you to say the name of the mark in Russian. Its examples are «восклицательный знак» (exclamation mark), «новая строка» (new line) and «новый абзац» (new paragraph).

The Russian edition of the command list, Команды для диктовки текста на Mac, translates the explanations but leaves the command words in English. Some entries as Apple prints them:

Command as printedResult shown
period / point / dot / full stop.
comma,
question mark?
exclamation mark!
colon:
semicolon;
quote / end quote« »
open parenthesis / close parenthesis( )
new linenew line
new paragraphnew paragraph
no space on / no space offnext phrase without spaces / normal spacing
percent sign%

Two things to take from it. Quotation marks come out as Russian guillemets « », not English “ ”. And the currency section lists the dollar, cent, pound, euro and yen signs but no ruble sign (₽).

Apple does not publish a Russian-language name for each mark. So start with the Russian words the guide itself uses, add the everyday Russian names (точка, запятая, вопросительный знак), and keep whichever your Mac turns into punctuation. Apple does not say which form works; test it.

Cyrillic keyboard vs Russian dictation

Typing and dictating are separate settings in the same Keyboard pane:

SettingWhereWhat it does
Dictation languageKeyboard → Dictation → LanguagesWhich language Dictation listens for
Input sourceKeyboard → Text Input → EditWhich keyboard layout your typing uses

Apple's Write in another language on Mac has you click Edit under Text Input, search for a language, and add an input source. It says the input source's language is then added to "your list of Dictation languages (if available)", and that Control-Space selects the last input source you used. That is the quickest way to flip to Cyrillic to fix a word and back to your Latin layout.

Apple's Dictation guide does not say you need a Russian input source active to dictate Russian; it describes only choosing the dictation language.

Apple also lists Russian under Voice Control, the accessibility feature for operating the Mac by voice. When Voice Control is on, Apple says standard Dictation "isn't available". Voice Control vs Dictation explains the choice.

What about other dictation apps?

Apple's Dictation is free, listed for on-device use in Russian, and the place to start. Its main gap for Russian is the missing auto-punctuation.

SuprFlow's requirements page lists 19 languages, including Russian, and its setup asks you to choose a speech-recognition language. We have not tested accuracy per language and make no accuracy claim for Russian, including punctuation or case endings. How to test SuprFlow with another language gives a short test. SuprFlow costs $125 once and has no free tier.

A 10-minute test for your Russian

  1. Write four made-up sentences: two ordinary, one with an English product or person name, and one with a date, an amount in rubles and a negation. For example: «Встреча с Джорданом Ченом назначена на 14 мая. Сумма — 2 750 рублей, а не 2 570.»
  2. Dictate them into Notes with Russian active, saying each punctuation mark in Russian.
  3. Repeat with the English command names from Apple's list and compare.
  4. Check case endings, the name, the figures, the quotation marks and the negation.

Questions people ask

Add Russian (Russia) under System Settings → Keyboard → Dictation → Languages → Edit, start Dictation, and choose Russian from the language shown next to the cursor.

Why does Mac dictation not add punctuation in Russian?

Apple does not list Russian for auto-punctuation. Say each mark, such as «запятая» or «точка», and check which words your Mac accepts.

Do I need a Russian keyboard to dictate in Russian?

Apple's Dictation guide does not mention one. Dictation language and input source are separate settings. A Russian input source helps when you correct words, and Control-Space switches back.
