Wispr Flow vs VoiceInk (2026): cloud subscription or $25 local app?

Wispr Flow is a cloud dictation subscription on four platforms. VoiceInk is an open-source Mac app that transcribes locally for $25 once. Compare cost, privacy and fit.

Choose VoiceInk if you work on an Apple Silicon Mac and want dictation that runs on the Mac, works offline, has public GPL v3 source code, and costs $25 once for one Mac, as of 3 October 2026. Choose Wispr Flow if you want a managed cloud service with cleanup built in and nothing to configure, the same tool on Windows, iPhone and Android, an Intel Mac or macOS 12 supported, a meeting Notetaker, or audit documents for your employer. They differ on every axis at once (where speech is processed, how you pay, whether you can read the code), so decide which axis matters most first.

Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 3 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.

We have not run a controlled benchmark of either app, so nothing here says which is more accurate.

Who should pick which?

  • Audio must stay on the Mac, or you work offline: VoiceInk with a local model. Wispr transcribes every dictation in its cloud and does not offer offline deployment.
  • You dislike subscriptions: VoiceInk, $25 to $49 once. Wispr Flow lists monthly and annual billing.
  • You want to read or build the code: VoiceInk.
  • You use Windows or Android, or an Intel Mac: Wispr Flow. VoiceInk "Works only on Apple Silicon Macs".
  • You want cleanup with no keys or models to choose: Wispr Flow. VoiceInk's AI enhancement uses a provider you set up.
  • Your employer wants SOC 2, ISO 27001 or a BAA: Wispr Flow publishes these. VoiceInk's pages we read list none.

What does each ask you to trust?

Wispr Flow asks you to trust a vendor with your audio, and documents how. Its security overview says audio is processed in the cloud and is not end-to-end encrypted, because Wispr must process it. It says third-party AI providers "cannot use your data to train their models" whatever your settings. On Free and Pro, turn off "Improve the model for everyone" and Dictation Cloud Storage in Settings if you do not want dictations retained. Is Wispr Flow safe? walks through each setting.

VoiceInk asks you to trust local software you can inspect. Its privacy policy, updated 27 September 2026, says "all transcription processing happens entirely on your device using local AI models" by default. Cloud transcription and AI enhancement start only when you add a provider. Public code lets someone check this, though a download is only proven to match the code if you build it. Is VoiceInk safe? covers licence activation and updates.

We have not audited either app.

Choose Wispr Flow if…

  • You want polished text with nothing to set up.
  • You use Windows, Android or an Intel Mac, or more than one device.
  • You want the Notetaker or team features.
  • Your organisation needs audit reports, SSO or a BAA, and permits cloud processing.

Choose VoiceInk if…

  • You use an Apple Silicon Mac on a recent macOS.
  • Speech must stay on the Mac, or you need offline dictation.
  • You want to pay once, cheaply, and read the code.
  • You are comfortable adding your own keys for any cloud step.

How do you test both in 15 minutes?

Wispr Free and VoiceInk's trial are enough. Use made-up content.

  1. Install both (4 minutes). Grant Microphone and Accessibility. Wispr uses Fn; give VoiceInk a different shortcut. In VoiceInk, download a local model and leave AI enhancement off.
  2. Dictate a messy note in your mail app (3 minutes). "Hi Gudrun, so, um, the contract value is 64,900 dollars, not 69,400. Signing is Monday the 20th, no, Tuesday the 21st. Copy Mr. Abernethy-Sato."
  3. Check both names, both amounts, the corrected date and the cleanup.
  4. Turn Wi-Fi off and repeat (3 minutes). Expect Wispr to fail and VoiceInk's local model to keep working.
  5. Try your jargon (5 minutes). Add misses to each app's dictionary and retry.

If VoiceInk needs no more fixes than Wispr, you may not need a subscription.

A third option

If you want local speech on a Mac but VoiceInk's model and enhancement choices are more than you want to manage, SuprFlow is a narrower paid app: hold Fn, speak, release, and text from an on-device model is pasted at the cursor, with Default formatting doing local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers. Optional cloud formatting sends transcript text, not audio, to the provider you pick. It costs $125 once for lifetime access on up to five Macs you own, with a 7-day refund on a first purchase and no trial. It is the wrong choice if you want the lowest price or open source (VoiceInk), or a free plan, Windows, phone apps, meeting notes or audit reports (Wispr Flow). It needs Apple Silicon and macOS 14 or later. SuprFlow vs VoiceInk and SuprFlow vs Wispr Flow compare them.

Questions people ask

Is VoiceInk a cheaper Wispr Flow alternative?

Yes, if you use an Apple Silicon Mac. VoiceInk is $25 once for one Mac; Wispr Flow Pro is $144 a year on annual billing, as of 3 October 2026. Wispr's free plan covers 2,000 words a week on desktop.

Does VoiceInk work offline when Wispr Flow does not?

Yes, with local models. Wispr says it does not offer offline deployment, and its docs say dictation is transcribed in the cloud.

Is VoiceInk more private than Wispr Flow?
