SuprFlow vs OpenWhispr: paid native Mac app or open-source suite?

Compare two local dictation paths, optional cloud modes, Mac support, source access, history, AI agents, and the maintenance work behind each choice.

This is a different comparison from SuprFlow versus a cloud-only dictation service. Both SuprFlow and OpenWhispr offer local speech recognition. OpenWhispr is open source, cross-platform, and also includes cloud and bring-your-own-key modes, notes, meetings, and an AI agent. SuprFlow is a packaged native Mac dictation app with local WhisperKit speech recognition, a personal dictionary, snippets, local cleanup, and optional text formatting through Ollama or a cloud API. The buyer's real choice may be a focused Mac utility versus a broader, inspectable suite.

OpenWhispr's current privacy policy calls local processing its default and says no audio leaves the device in that mode. It also says BYOK transcription sends audio directly to the chosen provider and OpenWhispr Cloud sends audio to its managed service. Its notes and agent features introduce separate sync and provider paths. That makes the selected mode and feature the unit of privacy review, not the product name.

Why source access matters—and what it does not prove

OpenWhispr lets a technical buyer inspect its code, build it, and track changes. That is a genuine advantage for organizations that require code review or want to self-maintain a fork. A public repository does not, by itself, prove that a downloaded binary matches that source, that every dependency is safe, or that a chosen cloud mode satisfies policy. Check releases, permissions, network behavior, and the provider settings you will deploy.

SuprFlow may suit someone who wants a focused native Mac utility rather than a broad workspace. Its local speech path is useful for confidential work, and its current privacy policy separately describes optional hosted formatting, telemetry, account/license traffic, local histories, and clipboard insertion. A buyer cannot inspect public source today, so ask the vendor for a release-specific data-flow document and independent evidence for sensitive deployments.

Run a comparison that tests your actual job

Use a fictional client note with a difficult name, negation, figure, and short list. On both apps choose a local speech mode and turn off optional cloud AI for the first pass. Record Mac model, app version, speech model, time to usable text, corrections, insertion behavior, history, and CPU or battery impact if relevant. Then separately test optional features that your team would genuinely use. Do not compare one product's local model with the other's cloud model and call the result an overall accuracy verdict.

For a team, add an IT work item: Can the settings be deployed and enforced? Who owns app and model updates? What happens when a user selects a cloud mode? How are local transcriptions deleted and backed up? OpenWhispr's more extensive feature set can be an advantage or an extra approval surface depending on policy.

Questions people ask

Is OpenWhispr fully offline?

Its documented local transcription mode can run without sending audio away. Other features and selected BYOK or OpenWhispr Cloud modes may use network services. Check the exact feature configuration.

Is SuprFlow open source?

No. The SuprFlow app repository is private, so it should not be described as open source. OpenWhispr publishes its code and MIT license on GitHub.

Which one is better for a bank's managed Mac?

Neither is automatically approved. Compare signed binaries, deployment controls, local/remote mode enforcement, telemetry, retention, clipboard use, security documentation, and the bank's approved destinations. Source access can help a bank audit OpenWhispr; a narrower feature set can simplify SuprFlow's pilot, but only with accurate vendor evidence.
