SuprFlow vs Hold to Talk: Mac dictation, privacy, and team setup

Compare SuprFlow with the open-source Hold to Talk Mac app on local speech, optional AI cleanup, macOS support, source access, and managed deployment.

If your main task is hold a key, speak, and put text in the active app, test Hold to Talk before paying for another dictation tool. Its current project offers a free, Apache-2.0 open-source app with local Parakeet speech recognition, optional local cleanup, a notarized download, and no required account. SuprFlow uses local WhisperKit recognition, local default cleanup, its own dictionary and voice snippets, and optional hosted or Ollama formatting. The useful distinction is the writing task, Mac version, management controls, and trust evidence you need.

The current Hold to Talk README lists macOS 15+ and Apple Silicon; SuprFlow's requirements page lists macOS 14+ and Apple Silicon. If a managed fleet includes Sonoma Macs, this can settle the shortlist. Check exact signed releases before deployment, because both projects can change requirements.

QuestionSuprFlowHold to Talk
How does local speech work?Loads a WhisperKit speech model on the Mac after an initial download.Repository says the default path uses sherpa-onnx with Parakeet TDT, downloaded during first setup.
How does writing cleanup work?Default local cleanup; optional configurable Ollama or hosted Cloud API formatting.Repository describes optional local cleanup with S1-mini or Apple Intelligence on supported Macs, plus optional OpenAI or Anthropic cleanup using the user's key.
Can audio or text be sent to a provider?Hosted formatting sends transcript text and instructions; custom Ollama can point to a remote endpoint. The Cloud API formatter does not upload audio.Optional cloud transcription can send audio; optional cloud cleanup can send text. The current README says those calls go directly to the chosen provider with the user's key.
Is the source public?Private source, all rights reserved.Public Apache-2.0 source and build instructions. The repository offers a signed/notarized download.
Are teams considered?A firm can review the signed app, but central enforcement of local-only formatting is not established in SuprFlow 1.0.0.Repository documents managed preferences, permission guidance, and proxy or Azure OpenAI options. Confirm these claims in the exact enterprise deployment and signed build.
What do I pay?Current homepage advertises a one-time commercial offer; verify checkout and update terms.Repository says free with no subscription or paywall; a managed team still owns deployment, support, and review effort.

Hold to Talk documents Fn as its default hotkey; SuprFlow's Fn mode also uses hold-and-release, with a custom toggle option. A keyboard comparison therefore needs actual use in the team's apps, not a screenshot of the shortcut setting. Test after sleep, with an external keyboard, and in a browser field. For SuprFlow, see the Fn/emoji troubleshooting guide.

Create a fictional note: “Casey Vale did not authorize a $12,400 transfer. Ask for written confirmation on Thursday.” Use the same microphone, Mac, quiet room, destination field, and human reviewer. Record each product's signed version, speech model, language, and cleanup setting. Do one pass with local cleanup and another only if your policy permits a hosted mode.

Review the pasted result for the name, did not, amount, and action. Note whether text reached the correct field, whether the app displayed the active processing path clearly, how many edits were needed, and whether local history or the system clipboard retained the test content. A clean sentence does not prove accurate legal or financial wording. For regulated work, use the bank vendor checklist and synthetic data first.

Do not claim WhisperKit or Parakeet is categorically more accurate from a single sample. Their performance varies with language, accent, microphone, model, and environment. Hold to Talk's README describes Parakeet as its local default and includes its own performance rationale; treat that as a project claim until your team reproduces results on its workload. SuprFlow's current site makes a “10x faster” claim that is not supported by its displayed words-per-minute figures; it should not be used as a comparison result.

Privacy and procurement decision

For local mode, both products avoid a speech-to-text upload according to SuprFlow's 1.0.0 release and Hold to Talk's project documentation. That does not mean identical privacy. SuprFlow has local text history, temporary clipboard insertion, account/license traffic, release telemetry, and optional hosted text formatting. Hold to Talk's README says no account or tracking in its default path and documents direct provider calls for optional cloud modes; inspect its current privacy file and signed app as part of procurement. A public repository improves auditability but does not prove a particular downloaded binary or setting is safe.

If the organization needs a centrally enforced local-only setting, ask both vendors/projects for evidence rather than assuming an individual can keep the switch off. Hold to Talk publishes enterprise deployment guidance; SuprFlow 1.0.0 does not establish equivalent fleet enforcement. For a single Mac user who needs dictionary, snippets, and SuprFlow's specific editing workflow, test whether those features save meaningful corrections. If Hold to Talk already produces a reviewed result with the required privacy controls, its free and open-source route may be the better choice.

Questions people ask

Is Hold to Talk fully offline?

Its default local speech path and optional local cleanup are documented as on-device after model setup. Choosing cloud transcription or cloud cleanup changes the data path. Check the current setting, provider key, model download, update traffic, and signed release rather than using “offline” as a blanket description.

Can Hold to Talk run on a macOS 14 Mac?

Its current README requires macOS 15+ on Apple Silicon. SuprFlow's current requirements list macOS 14+. Confirm the actual download's minimum version before installing on a managed Mac.

Which one should a law firm or bank approve?

The firm decides from the signed build, approved formatter, endpoint controls, local and provider retention, permissions, telemetry, installation, and final record system. Neither a paid license nor an open-source repository is itself a compliance approval.
