Is Handy worth it? Who the free open-source app suits, and who not

Not a review: Handy costs nothing, so the question is whether its simple, unsupported, open-source design fits you. Who should use it, and a 15-minute test.

Handy costs nothing, so the real question is whether it is worth your time. It is a good fit if you want free push-to-talk dictation with speech recognised on your own computer, on a Mac, Windows or Linux, and you value open-source code you can inspect. It is probably not the right tool if you want a company to support you, cleanup and editing features built in, or a vendor your employer can review. Installing it and running the 15-minute test below is the quickest way to find out.

Publisher note: SuprFlow publishes this guide and is one of the products discussed. Competitor details come from each company's own pages, checked on 3 October 2026. Prices and features change; confirm before you buy.

This is not a review and there is no score. We make a competing Mac app, and we have not tested Handy's accuracy or speed. What follows is what Handy documents, who that suits, and how to judge it yourself.

What do you get, according to Handy?

AreaWhat Handy documents
PriceFree; no paid tier. Donations and sponsors fund it.
LicenceMIT, with source on GitHub.
How it worksPress a shortcut: hold to record and release, or tap to toggle. Text is pasted into the field you are typing in.
Speech modelsWhisper (Small, Medium, Turbo, Large) and Parakeet V3, run on your computer.
PlatformsWindows, macOS and Linux. v0.9.8, released 3 October 2026, includes Mac downloads for Apple Silicon and Intel.
Network useUpdate checks (on by default), model downloads, and optional cloud post-processing you choose to configure.
TelemetryThe privacy policy says there is no advertising, behavioural analytics or user-tracking telemetry.

The website sums up its approach as "One tool, one job." The strengths are no cost, no account, local speech, public code and wide platform support.

What limits does Handy document?

  • No warranty and no support contract. The MIT licence provides the software "AS IS, WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND". Help comes through GitHub issues, Discord and email, and public issues are public.
  • Known issues are listed openly. On a Mac, a Bluetooth headset microphone may reduce playback quality while recording, and fn (Globe) key shortcuts only work on Apple keyboards.
  • Few extras. The project does not describe snippets, meeting recording or file transcription.
  • Cleanup is optional and configured by you. Post-processing can use a cloud provider, which receives your transcript, or a local option. Is Handy safe and open source? covers the choices.
  • Third-party packages. The README says the Homebrew cask and winget package are not maintained by the Handy developers.

Who is Handy worth it for, and who should choose something else?

Your employer needs a vendor contract, audit reports or a BAAA commercial vendorAn open-source project offers none of these.

Where SuprFlow fits, honestly: it is a paid, proprietary Mac app for Apple Silicon. Speech recognition runs on the Mac with an on-device model, and Default formatting is local cleanup of punctuation, capitalization and numbers. It costs $125 for lifetime access on up to five Macs you own, with no subscription and a 7-day refund on a first purchase, and it has no free tier or trial. It is the wrong choice if Handy already does the job, if you want free or open source, or if you use Windows, Linux or an Intel Mac. Try Handy first; SuprFlow vs Handy covers when paying might be worth it.

How can you test Handy in 15 minutes?

The script is fictional, so nothing private is involved.

  1. Install and pick a model (4 minutes). Download from the releases page or handy.computer, grant the permissions it asks for, and download one model.
  2. Dictate an email (2 minutes). In your mail app, hold your shortcut and say: "Hi Ingrid, the repair estimate is 1,940 dollars, not 1,490. We need, um, 12 sorry 15 panels. Please confirm by Friday the 17th. Thanks, Desmond." Release.
  3. Check five things. The name, both figures, the panel correction, the date and the punctuation.
  4. Dictate into your hardest app (3 minutes). A browser form, chat app or code editor.
  5. Try your vocabulary (3 minutes). Two sentences with a colleague's surname, a product name and an acronym. Add misses to Handy's custom words and retry.
  6. Go offline (3 minutes). Turn off Wi-Fi and repeat step 2.

Run the same script with Apple Dictation and one other app. How to run a fair Mac dictation comparison has a fuller method. If Handy needs few fixes, there is little reason to pay for anything else.

Questions people ask

Is Handy good?

We have not benchmarked it, so we will not rate it. Handy documents local Whisper and Parakeet models, a simple shortcut workflow and apps for three platforms. Run the test above with your own voice.

Is Handy really free?

Yes. There is no paid tier. See Is Handy free? for what free does and does not cover.

Should I donate to Handy?

That is your choice. The website lists sponsors and a donate link; a donation does not buy support or features.

Is Handy safe enough for work?

Its privacy policy describes local transcription and no tracking telemetry, and the code is public. Whether your employer accepts an unsupported open-source app is a question for your IT team.
